The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired a conditional, future first round draft pick from the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for guard Jerryd Bayless, it was announced on Saturday by General Manager Rich Cho.

“On behalf of the Trail Blazers organization, I want to thank Jerryd Bayless for his service to the team and wish him all the best for the future,” said Rich Cho.

Acquired by the Trail Blazers in a draft day trade, Bayless was originally selected by Indiana with the 11th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. The Arizona product and third-year pro has career averages of 6.8 points, 1.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 127 games (11 starts).

The Cavaliers offered the Clippers guard Maurice Williams and forward Jamario Moon in exchange for guard Baron Davis earlier this offseason, according to a league source.

Cleveland, at the time, was desperate to please LeBron James, who eventually left for Miami as a free agent.

James was believed to be down on Williams and is known to like Davis.

Thunder forward Jeff Green will likely enter the season without a long-term contract, but coach Scott Brooks isn't concerned about the former first-round pick.

Oklahoma City has until Nov. 1 to give him an extension, but he'll likely become a restricted free agent next offseason.

"Hasn't even crossed my mind," Brooks said when asked if he thought Green's contract status would affect his play.

"There's no doubt that some players I played with or that I coached, that is the agenda. But with Jeff, that has not even crossed my mind."

Brooks elaborated when asked why he felt Green is different.

"Maybe because I know him," the coach said. "I know who he was when he came into the league, and he hasn't changed. He still works every day in practice. He still tries to get better. He still tries to make the right play. He's not forcing shots. He's not taking bad shots … He hasn't forced anything in camp. He's a pro and he likes being on this team."

Nuggets point guard Chauncey Billups is constantly asked about the future of teammate Carmelo Anthony, but he is never able to provide a valid answer.

" 'I don't know' — that's all I can tell them," Billups said. "But nothing I can say can calm (their fears), since I don't know."

Billups admitted that he's worried about Anthony's future in the past, but with the regular season so close he's put those fears out of his mind.

"I've taken myself all the way out of it," Billups said. "We can't control it, so why would I give it that much thought? All I can do is hope for the best for our team and for the city, and you know what that is — him staying here for as long as possible — but that's all I can really do.

"It's bigger than what I can tell Melo. It's him, his circle, his family making their own decisions. I can't tell him anything he doesn't really know."

Deng Attributes Improved Stroke To Summer Of Basketball

Bulls forward Luol Deng has been red-hot this preseason, shooting 50.6% from the field and 51.3% from three-point land.

Deng credits his hot shooting to a summer of basketball, including a stint with the Great Britain national team.

He was forced to sit out the entire 2009 offseason as he recovered from a stress fracture in his right tibia.

"I don't like to take summers off," Deng said. "Last summer was really hard for me. Three days before preseason is when I started playing live. This year, I came into camp in shape and I played continually. And that really helped my confidence."

The Bulls have until Nov. 1 to decide whether or not to pick up the third-year option on forward James Johnson.

Chicago drafted Johnson in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft.

Many predicted that Johnson would be the odd man out in the Bulls' rotation, but a recent hot streak has improved his stock slightly.

"I just didn't want to have one good game in Toronto and take three games off," Johnson said. "I feel like if we need energy off the bench, then I'm going to be the guy who fills that role."

Instead of picking Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, Bryant went with Portland's Brandon Roy.

"Roy 365 days, seven days a week. Roy has no weaknesses in his game," Bryant said.

The Magic may be getting closer to bringing Fran Vazquez overseas and into the NBA.

The Spanish forward is warming to the idea of coming to the NBA for the 2011-12 season, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel.

Vazquez has another year left on his contract with FC Barcelona.

"It's more open now than it has been in the past with Fran," Magic assistant general manager Dave Twardzik told the Sentinel.

Orlando drafted Vazquez with the 11th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Suns forward Jared Dudley is eligible for a contract extension, but the team appears unlikely to give him one.

Dudley's agent, Mark Bartelstein, has discussed a potential deal with Phoenix, but the 2007 first-round pick isn't expecting anything to happen by the Nov. 1 deadline.

"You've got to understand where the Suns are coming from," Dudley said. "I'm going to be a restricted free agent. In the collective-bargaining agreement, you don't know. I can understand. Our class might have only two guys (Kevin Durant and Joakim Noah) that sign. I heard Al Horford might sign soon, so that's three. The CBA has a lot to do with it. We have a new GM and president, so I think they'll wait and see."

"It doesn't really matter for me because my value is only going to go up every year because I'm getting more comfortable with another year in this system. I don't mind waiting a year if the Suns wanted to do that. But I'm not someone who is willing to take a whole, whole lot less just because of the collective bargaining agreement. I'm expecting a big year from myself and my team and playing a bigger role. If they take care of me like Channing (Frye) and Josh (Childress), I'll be back."

The Jazz have a significant trade chip in Andrei Kirilenko's $17.8 million expiring contract, but they appear unlikely to move it.

Other teams might show interest in Kirilenko's contract, but Utah general manager Kevin O'Connor likes continuity.

"The way Andrei has played for us in the past and the way he played in the preseason, he's a real key to our team," O'Connor said. "He really competes."

Last season the Jazz had the expiring contract of Carlos Boozer, but they opted to hold onto him.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have exercised the fourth-year contract option on forward J.J. Hickson, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today.

Hickson’s extension keeps him under contract with the Cavaliers through the 2011-12 season. During the 2009-10 season, he more than doubled his scoring average from 4.0 points per game as a rookie to 8.5 points and increased his field goal percentage from .515 to .554 in 81 games played (73 starts). The 22-year old forward also averaged 4.9 rebounds in 20.9 minutes per game. In eight games (seven starts) this preseason, Hickson averaged 14.3 points on .475 shooting, a team-leading 8.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 block in 24.5 minutes per game.

Stackhouse, who was originally drafted with the third pick in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, has appeared in 896 career games (563 starts) with five teams over 15 NBA seasons.

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni is touting forward Amar'e Stoudemire as an MVP candidate this season.

"I'm hoping he's the MVP this year," D'Antoni said. "That's kind of what he should shoot for and I'm sure what he's trying to be."

Unless they deal for Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks will need a dominant season from Stoudemire in order to contend for a playoff spot.

Asked Thursday if he has reached his prime, Stoudemire said: "Not yet, not yet. I think this year is going to be the starting point of my prime."

76ers coach Doug Collins returned to practice with the team on Friday after missing two preseason games because of symptoms related to a concussion he sustained back in May.

Collins said after practice that he fainted in a coffee shop on Memorial Day in Phoenix and broke three ribs. He also sustained a concussion.

"The doctor feels very good about it because he knows what it is," Collins said. "One of the crystals in my ear was knocked loose. It wasn't related to fatigue or stress or anything like that."

Heat forward Mike Miller underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament and fracture on his right thumb on Friday.

Miller is expected to be out until January.

He suffered the injury during practice on Wednesday when his hand got caught in a teammate's jersey.

"It's good to finally have a resolution about his injury, and now a course of action to make it better," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

"I feel bad for Mike. I know how badly he wanted to get this season started in the right way. He's down right now, but it's the unfortunate reality of our profession. I knew this season wasn't going to be easy."
