A Way of Life in the Family of God
A Course in Spiritual Formation
(Week 7 - Eternal Life)
“Spiritual Formation” - a process of spiritual growth, maturation,
- wherein we clarify, organize and integrate the central spiritual truths in our lives … (the great gifts, the “great and precious promises of God")
- so that, by the exercise of "our faith, and the spirit’'s transformation",
we can more fully live them out, become them, embody them
Our faith in these great gifts “shapes and dominates our mode of living.”
We can attempt to develop and internalize a “personal spiritual culture”,
he skeletal structure around which grows the living and dynamic body of
personal spiritual experience — true religion.

We can attempt to cultivate …

- “a symbolism of rituals, slogans, or goals” 87:7.10
- each one can be a …… slogan —-> goals —-> personal practices (rituals)
(Note: Each of the seven essential truths are eternal experiences, worthy of study for many months.)

Quotes on Eternal Life
The Original Family (Trinity) and The Universe Family
14:6.12 . … To the Eternal Son the superb central creation (Havona) affords
eternal proof of the partnership effectiveness of the divine family-Father, Son, and Spirit.
6:8.1 … In the same sense that God is the Universal Father, the Son is the Universal Mother.
And all of us, high and low, constitute their universal family.
5:4.3 … the truly religious individual seeks to identify the self with the universe
and then to dedicate the activities of this unified self to the service of the
universe family of fellow beings, human and superhuman.
33:3.7 The (Creator) Son and the (Universe Mother) Spirit now preside over the universe
much as a father and mother watch over, and minister to, their family of sons and daughters.
It is not altogether out of place to refer to the Universe Spirit as the creative companion
of the Creator Son and to regard the creatures of the realms as their sons and daughters
— a grand and glorious family but one of untold responsibilities and endless watchcare.
14:6.11 The eternal Father views with never-ending satisfaction the Havona
creation as the worthy and alluring goal for the ascension candidates of time,
his mortal grandchildren of space achieving their Creator-Father’s eternal home.
And God takes pleasure in the Paradise-Havona universe as the eternal
home of Deity and the divine family.
In addition to the five family circles in The Family Way, there are the
two additional circles above, families of eternal relationship,
presented in the Urantia revelation.
How do they add an eternal dimension to your experience of spiritual family?
---------------------------------------------------------------
92:4.2 … the religions of revelation are always characterized by a belief in some
Deity of final value and in some concept of the survival of personality identity
after death.
101:2.7 Religion believes unreservedly in the existence and reality of
a God who fosters personality survival.
195:2.8 The Greeks, in contrast with the Jews and many other peoples, had
long provisionally believed in immortality, some sort of survival after death,
and since this was the very heart of Jesus’ teaching, it was certain that Christianity
would make a strong appeal to them.
195:6.10 But religious leaders are making a great mistake when they try to call
modern man to spiritual battle with the trumpet blasts of the Middle Ages.
Religion must provide itself with new and up-to-date slogans. …
Jesus in his gospel introduced mortal man to the very entrance upon
an eternal reality of spiritual progression.
170:5.19 … There must come a revival of the actual teachings of Jesus, such a
restatement as will undo the work of his early followers who went about to
create a sociophilosophical system of belief regarding the fact of Michael’s
sojourn on earth. In a short time the teaching of this story about Jesus nearly
supplanted the preaching of Jesus’ gospel …. In this way a historical religion
displaced that teaching in which Jesus had blended man’s highest moral ideas
and spiritual ideals with man’s most sublime hope for the future — eternal life.
And that was the gospel of the kingdom.
170:2.2 … The gospel … was to set man free and inspire him to dare to hope
for eternal life.
40:5.18 … the ascension career is the most important factor in any
consideration of the mortals of time and space.
How would you feel if death was your endpoint, and there was no afterlife?
(That’s how many of our fellows feel.)
How does the prospect of an eternal life of spiritual progression affect you?
Why is the last quote above true?
---------------------------------------------------------------
101:10.2 … the exhaustion of the possibilities of logic and reason will never reveal
to the logician or to the reasoner the eternal truth of the survival of personality.
101:10.3 … neither of these discloses to the inquiring mortal an avenue of escape
from partiality of status and from the intolerable suspense of being a transient
reality in the universe, a temporal personality doomed to be extinguished upon
the exhaustion of the limited life energies.
101:10.4 … Only in the spiritual sense is man a child of God. And this is true
because it is only in the spiritual sense that man is at present endowed and
indwelt by the Paradise Father. … The faith acceptance of the truth of God
enables man to escape from the circumscribed confines of material limitations
and affords him a rational hope of achieving safe conduct from the material
realm, whereon is death, to the spiritual realm, wherein is life eternal.
1:2.2 …God…is a saving person and a loving Father to all who enjoy spiritual
peace on earth, and who crave to experience personality survival in death.
---------------------------------------------------------------
110:3.5 … Ignorance alone can never prevent survival; neither can confusional doubts
nor fearful uncertainty. Only conscious resistance to the Adjuster’s leading can prevent
the survival of the evolving immortal soul.
155:6.17 Now, mistake not, my Father will ever respond to the faintest flicker of faith.
He takes note of the physical and superstitious emotions of the primitive man.
And with those honest but fearful souls whose faith is so weak that it amounts
to little more than an intellectual conformity to a passive attitude of assent
to religions of authority, the Father is ever alert to honor and foster even
all such feeble attempts to reach out for him. But you who have been called
out of darkness into the light are expected to believe with a whole heart;
your faith shall dominate the combined attitudes of body, mind, and spirit.
40:5.19 As to the chances of mortal survival, let it be made forever clear: All souls
of every possible phase of mortal existence will survive provided they
manifest willingness to co-operate with their indwelling Adjusters and e
xhibit a desire to find God and to attain divine perfection, even though these
desires be but the first faint flickers of the primitive comprehension of
that “true light which lights every man who comes into the world.”
188:4.9 All this concept of atonement and sacrificial salvation is rooted and
grounded in selfishness. Jesus taught that service to one’s fellows is the highest
concept of the brotherhood of spirit believers. Salvation should be taken for granted
by those who believe in the fatherhood of God. The believer’s chief concern
should not be the selfish desire for personal salvation but rather the unselfish
urge to love and, therefore, serve one’s fellows even as Jesus loved
and served mortal men.
Do you assume you will have salvation and eternal life?
Do you “take it for granted,” act as if it is an accomplished fact?
How does that affect the way you live, and your energy for service?
---------------------------------------------------------------
115:1.1 Partial, incomplete, and evolving intellects would be helpless in the
master universe, would be unable to form the first rational thought pattern,
were it not for the innate ability of all mind, high or low,
to form a universe frame in which to think.
115:1.2 … Man must think in a mortal universe frame, but that does not mean
that he cannot envision other and higher frames within which thought
can take place.
194:3.3 … The religion of Jesus does not seek to escape this life in order to
enjoy the waiting bliss of another existence. The religion of Jesus provides the
joy and peace of another and spiritual existence to enhance and ennoble the
life which men now live in the flesh.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Time and Eternity 118:1
118:1.2 The personality of the mortal creature may eternalize by self-identification
with the indwelling spirit through the technique of choosing to do the will of the Father.
Such a consecration of will is tantamount to the realization of eternity-reality of purpose.
This means that the purpose of the creature has become fixed with regard to
the succession of moments stated otherwise, that the succession of moments will w
itness no change in creature purpose. A million or a billion moments makes
no difference. Number has ceased to have meaning with regard to the
creature’s purpose. Thus does creature choice plus God’s choice eventuate
in the eternal realities of the never-ending union of the spirit of God and the nature
of man in the everlasting service of the children of God and of their Paradise Father.
118:1.3 There is a direct relationship between maturity and the unit of time consciousness
in any given intellect. The time unit may be a day, a year, or a longer period,
but inevitably it is the criterion by which the conscious self evaluates the circumstances of life,
and by which the conceiving intellect measures and evaluates the facts of temporal existence.
118:1.4 Experience, wisdom, and judgment are the concomitants of the lengthening o
f the time unit in mortal experience. As the human mind reckons backward into the past,
it is evaluating past experience for the purpose of bringing it to bear on a present situation.
As mind reaches out into the future, it is attempting to evaluate the future significance
of possible action. And having thus reckoned with both experience and wisdom,
the human will exercises judgment-decision in the present, and the plan of action
thus born of the past and the future becomes existent.
118:1.5 In the maturity of the developing self, the past and future are brought
together to illuminate the true meaning of the present. As the self matures,
it reaches further and further back into the past for experience, while its wisdom
forecasts seek to penetrate deeper and deeper into the unknown future.
And as the conceiving self extends this reach ever further into both past and future,
so does judgment become less and less dependent on the momentary present.
In this way does decision-action begin to escape from the fetters of the moving
present, while it begins to take on the aspects of past-future significance.
118:1.6 Patience is exercised by those mortals whose time units are short; true
maturity transcends patience by a forbearance born of real understanding.
118:1.7 To become mature is to live more intensely in the present, at the same
time escaping from the limitations of the present. The plans of maturity,
founded on past experience, are coming into being in the present in such
manner as to enhance the values of the future.
118:1.8 The time unit of immaturity concentrates meaning-value into the present moment
in such a way as to divorce the present of its true relationship to the not-present
— the past-future. The time unit of maturity is proportioned so to reveal the co-ordinate
relationship of past-present-future that the self begins to gain insight into the wholeness
of events, begins to view the landscape of time from the panoramic perspective of
broadened horizons, begins perhaps to suspect the nonbeginning, nonending
eternal continuum, the fragments of which are called time.
Have you begun to experience the “wholeness of events,” the focusing of past experience and future wisdom forecasts in determining present decision/ actions?
Can you think of an experience of this in your life?
Can you see how, eventually, this process would allow us to break out of our finite frames of reference?
---------------------------------------------------------------
94:7.3 …Gautama…made a noble effort to deliver men from fear, to make them
feel at ease and at home in the great universe, but he failed to show them
the pathway to that real and supernal home of ascending mortals — Paradise —
and to the expanding service of eternal existence.
170:2.7 6. …Man’s mortal sojourn on earth acquired new meanings consequent
upon the recognition of a noble destiny.
170:2.8 7. The new gospel affirmed that human salvation is the revelation of
a far-reaching divine purpose to be fulfilled and realized in the future destiny
of the endless service of the salvaged sons of God.
48:8.2 There is a definite and divine purpose in all this morontia and subsequent
spirit scheme of mortal progression, this elaborate universe training school for
ascending creatures. It is the design of the Creators to afford the creatures of
time a graduated opportunity to master the details of the operation and
administration of the grand universe, and this long course of training is best
carried forward by having the surviving mortal climb up gradually and by actual
participation in every step of the ascent.
48:8.3 The mortal-survival plan has a practical and serviceable objective; you a
re not the recipients of all this divine labor and painstaking training only that
you may survive just to enjoy endless bliss and eternal ease. There is a goal
of transcendent service concealed beyond the horizon of the present universe
age. If the Gods designed merely to take you on one long and eternal joy
excursion, they certainly would not so largely turn the whole universe into one
vast and intricate practical training school, requisition a substantial part of the
celestial creation as teachers and instructors, and then spend ages upon ages
piloting you, one by one, through this gigantic universe school of experiential
training. The furtherance of the scheme of mortal progression seems to be one
of the chief businesses of the present organized universe, and the majority o
f innumerable orders of created intelligences are either directly or indirectly
engaged in advancing some phase of this progressive perfection plan.
48:8.4 In traversing the ascending scale of living existence from mortal man
to the Deity embrace, you actually live the very life of every possible phase and
stage of perfected creature existence within the limits of the present universe age.
From mortal man to Paradise finaliter embraces all that now can be -
encompasses everything presently possible to the living orders of intelligent,
perfected finite creature beings. If the future destiny of the Paradise finaliters is
service in new universes now in the making, it is assured that in this new and
future creation there will be no created orders of experiential beings whose
lives will be wholly different from those which mortal finaliters have lived on
some world as a part of their ascending training, as one of the stages of their
agelong progress from animal to angel and from angel to spirit and from spirit to God.
Eternal life will be full to the brim with learning, growth and service. How does that make you feel about the upcoming endless adventure?
---------------------------------------------------------------
1:0.3 … The will creatures of universe upon universe have embarked upon
the long, long Paradise journey, the fascinating struggle of the eternal
adventure of attaining God the Father. The transcendent goal of the children
of time is to find the eternal God, to comprehend the divine nature, to recognize
the Universal Father. God-knowing creatures have only one supreme ambition,
just one consuming desire, and that is to become, as they are in their spheres,
like him as he is in his Paradise perfection of personality.
2:2.5 God’s primal perfection consists not in an assumed righteousness but
rather in the inherent perfection of the goodness of his divine nature.
He is final, complete, and perfect. There is no thing lacking in the beauty
and perfection of his righteous character. And the whole scheme of living
existences on the worlds of space is centered in the divine purpose of
elevating all will creatures to the high destiny of the experience of
sharing the Father’s Paradise perfection.
106:7.5 … No matter how much of God you may attain, there will always
remain much more of him, the existence of which you will not even suspect.
… The quest for God is endless!
106:7.6 Such inability to attain God in a final sense should in no manner
discourage universe creatures; … Far from harassing the creature, the infinity
of God should be the supreme assurance that throughout all endless futurity
an ascending personality will have before him the possibilities of personality
development and Deity association which even eternity will neither exhaust
nor terminate.
In good families, children aspire to grow up and become like their parents.
Our eternal (never-ending) goal is to become Godlike, more and more like our heavenly Parent.
How does this eternal goal affect the spiritual Parent/Child Relationship with our heavenly Parent?

Here are some quotes describing how our eternal lives will be filled to overflowing with “astonishment, wonder, surprises, adventures, discoveries, zero monotony, endless travel encountering “new people and worlds”, training and service opportunities, achievements and “participation in the cocreation of ourselves.”
Enjoy!!!
14:5.9 Not only will you find undreamed-of changes confronting you as you
advance from circuit to circuit in Havona, but your astonishment will be
inexpressible as you progress from planet to planet within each circuit.
Each of these billion study worlds is a veritable university of surprises.
Continuing astonishment, unending wonder, is the experience of those
who traverse these circuits and tour these gigantic spheres.
Monotony is not a part of the Havona career.
14:5.10 Love of adventure, curiosity, and dread of monotony — these traits
inherent in evolving human nature — were not put there just to aggravate and
annoy you during your short sojourn on earth, but rather to suggest to you that
death is only the beginning of an endless career of adventure, an everlasting life
of anticipation, an eternal voyage of discovery.
28:6.18 The universal economy is based on intake and output throughout the eternal
career you will never encounter monotony of inaction or stagnation of personality.
30:3.12 … The privilege of intrauniverse travel and observation is a part of the
career of all ascending beings. The human desire to travel and observe new peoples
and worlds will be fully gratified during the long and eventful climb to Paradise
through the local, super-, and central universes.
65:3.7 … Be patient! If you have good ideas, if your minds are fertile with
better methods of administration for any part of the universal domains, y
ou are certainly going to have an opportunity to present them to your
associates and fellow administrators in the ages to come.
32:3.10 The fact of animal evolutionary origin does not attach stigma to any
personality in the sight of the universe … When the heights of perfection and
eternity are attained, all the more honor to those who began at the bottom
and joyfully climbed the ladder of life, round by round, and who, w
hen they do reach the heights of glory, will have gained a personal experience
which embodies an actual knowledge of every phase of life from the bottom to the top.
32:3.11 … It would be just as easy for the Universal Father to make all mortals
perfect beings…. But that would deprive them of the wonderful experience of
the adventure and training associated with the long and gradual inward climb,
an experience to be had only by those who are so fortunate as to begin at the
very bottom of living existence.
116:4.11 The local universe is the starting place for those personalities who
are farthest from God, and who can therefore experience the greatest degree
of spiritual ascent in the universe, can achieve the maximum of experiential
participation in the cocreation of themselves.
40:7.5 … such Adjuster-fused mortals are the only class of human beings who
all traverse the Havona circuits and find God on Paradise. To the Adjuster-fused
mortal the career of universal service is wide open. What dignity of destiny and
glory of attainment await every one of you! Do you fully appreciate what has been
done for you? Do you comprehend the grandeur of the heights of eternal achievement
which are spread out before you? — even you who now trudge on in the lowly
path of life through your so-called “vale of tears”?
-------------------------------------------------------------
32:5.8 The goal of eternity is ahead! The adventure of divinity attainment lies
before you! The race for perfection is on! whosoever will may enter,
and certain victory will crown the efforts of every human being who will run the race o
f faith and trust, depending every step of the way on the leading of the indwelling Adjuster
and on the guidance of that good spirit of the Universe Son …
32:5.7 There is in the mind of God a plan which embraces every creature of all
his vast domains, and this plan is an eternal purpose of boundless opportunity,
unlimited progress, and endless life. And the infinite treasures of such a
matchless career are yours for the striving!
