These day I was looking for a good quality book about english. So I backtracked what I've learned till now. And I had two books in my mind. One is about reading and the other everyday english(생활 영어).
One is 'super english reading'(영어 순해) by Kim Young Rho. You know this book? I think most elder people who wanted to stretch his english skill touched this book. It's a book for fluent english reading. It focus on readers of TIME magazine or other challenging books.
The other is 'Everyday American English' by Cho Wha Yu. I've learned lots of expressions from this book. I do not know how many expressions in my brain now.;;
I have a reason to ask you this question. Most of us are here for development of our english writing skill. And I am desperate to find some good quality books for my english writing exercises. The author of 'super english reading' said "Digest thoroughly". And he also suggested that we should use all the expressions in the book for writing exercises. So I've decied to use this book as my tentative english writing exercise book. The author in this book said if we follow his suggestion we can write very well in 1 year. I think it's possible if I keep trying. But if you do not mind, I want to hear your opinion about good english writing book.
I know there are lots of books about english writing. But they look so boring. I mean structure of those books look like a grammer book when I was in high school. Everybody has their preference about this part I think. In my case I do not prefer something high school grammar book style.
The reason I refered everyday english is speaking has a very close relation with writing. I've learned some expressions from the book 'Everyday American English' but I wanted something more. Precisely I wanted something different. As I said I do not prefer something academic style. So I've changed my approach about this. I usually watch sitcom of the US. And I am starting other drama from the US. There are good and bad points in this approach I think. This approach is not systematic. I mean I cannot know all necessary expressions from drama than from everyday english book. And there are lots of slang in drama. I've heard lots of words that I couldn't find in my dictionary. Even if I found a word from drama, that was a slang. I mean as a english learner it does not look good to learn lots of slang. But it uses current english. It's a real big value.
Do you have some good quality book in your mind?
Do you have your own approach about writing and speaking?
If you do not mind, share some tips with me. : )
첫댓글I don't like most of the writing textbooks in the market, mainly because of the suspect quality of the example sentences they use, as explained in my column. You say that you don't like grammar-oriented textbooks, either, but many of the writing textbooks are still grammar-centered, for instance, 기
I just think it's very good but looks not that much material. I mean if I really want to do my hard training I think I need more assignment. (I do not want to make you a grinder, Jin Seung. ^__^;)
I do not know this word 'grinder' is alright. I've seen it from a song by monocrom. The song title is 'The grinder'. And it almost means someone who just do hard his work and feel painful sometimes.
I think 'super english reading' is very good still. It has lots of expressions that is not easily translated into Korean. I mean it has many expressions that just exist in english, not in korean.

적의 영작문. So a good alternative for you would be our BTE. How do you like BTE?
Absolutely. There is nothing like our BTE. ^^

That's true. I need to add a lot more, but it will take time. Thank you for telling me about good books, though. I will try to check them out.
It's my pleasure. : )
