(Jesus tells the disciples in advance for their expectation and preparation.)2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. (The Jews will kick the disciples out of the synagogue, thinking that should be the service to God. The synagogue had been a base camp for Judaism (and the disciples) for hundreds of years. But they must leave the cradle to go to the world by being kicked out. Ac, 1:8, Ac. 19:9-10. The new wine in the new wineskin Mt. 9:17. "Learn the Basic. Forget the Basic.")3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. (The Jews didn't know the true teachings of the Old Scriptures about the New Era which has been begun by Jesus Christ.)4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. (Jesus tells the disciples, particularly at his upcoming departure, about the upcoming resistance and rejection of the Jews to the New Gospel, to prepare them.) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ (However, it was difficult for the disciples to understand the unprecedented hardship and the responsibility of the disciples to start and lead the new era.)6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. (So they were concerned so much.)7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. (For the new era, which is the God's only plan for the salvation, Jesus must leave them back on the earth alone. Yes, however, the Holy Spirit will replace the immediate presence of Jesus for the left-behind disciples, not only in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria, but also to the end of the earth. Ac. 1:8)8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. (The Holy Spirit will condemn the sin of unbelief of the world and confirm‎ the righteousness of the believers to make clear what is for eternal life and what is for eternal damnation which has been the ministry of Jesus.)12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. (There were plenty more for Jesus to teach His disciples, maybe too much for them to grasp.)13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. (But the upcoming Holy Spirit will teach the disciples. (How we may learn from the Spirit then?) Furthermore God had already equiped human being with the spiritual learning capacity, Gen. 1:26-27, Ecc. 3:11, Rom. 1:20. And also the disciples will write what they had learned from Jesus (the New Testament) on the base of the Old Scriptures. Distant learning system had been established! So while we learn the Word diligently we must sensitively await the illumination and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit by examining our deep self inside. We. ourselves are an another hidden but very crucial text, or reflection of God and His will. 2Pe. 1:4)14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. (The Holy Spirit is the perfect homogenization of Jesus in the glory of Trinity, and in the larger scales of space and time.)15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” (The Triune God works together in His times.) The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” (Jesus meant His death and resurrection with this saying. Maybe also His ascension and second coming too.)17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.” (The disciples couldn't understand what Jesus meant but they will come to know after His death and resurrection.)19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? (Jesus understood the confusion of the disciples.)20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. (They will weep on Jesus' death, but rejoice on His resurrection.)21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. (There are necessary meaningful sufferings and agonies on the way to the joy and glory.)22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. (Grief now but rejoice later.)23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. (You will come to the more knowledge of God and Hiss will, because God never leaves us in doubt and ignorance.)24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. (Jesus secures us the direct channel to God through Himself.)25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively (such as parables), a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of (worldly) language but will tell you plainly (with superior way of communication) about my Father. (The capacity of the worldly language is limited as much as the human capacity. But the spiritual connection/communication enables us to know more and better of God. Isa. 11:9, Hab. 2:14, 1Co. 13:12) 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. (It still is indirect and mediated communication with God.)27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. (But there will be a time that disciples will know more and better of God.)28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.” (Jesus came from God, stayed on the earth for such a short time, and going back to God.)29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. (The disciples felt that they become more understanding of Jesus.)30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” (The disciples confessed to Jesus that, they now know that Jesus knows all, including what the disciples should know. So, they came to the solid knowledge of Jesus that He came from God.)31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. (The class is almost over. How much the goal of the three years of curriculum for disciples accomplished? Did we learn anything along the way?)32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. (The time of the suffering and isolation from the closest of Jesus has come.) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. (But the most important and the only aide to Jesus is God. 2:24-25, 7:5, Lk. 9:57-62, We must not seek approval, praise, or glory from mankind. 12:13, Lk. 6:26, Gal. 1:10)33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (We have the reason to be peaceful in the Lord while living in many sufferings, conflicts, turmoils, struggles, etc., because Jesus has won the world.)
