아침 햇살이 따스하게 공터를 비추고 있었다.

나무 그늘 아래, 커다란 매우살찐 용이 배를 깔고 쿨쿨 잠을 자고 있었다.

그 옆에는 이불처럼 펼쳐진 날개, 그리고 군데군데 굴러다니는 어젯밤 음식의 흔적들.

“얘 또 자고 있어…”

주인공은 용의 옆구리를 툭툭 찼지만,

“으으… 조금만 더… 소화 아직 덜 됐어…”

라며 용은 몸을 웅크리고 배를 감싸 안는다.

“어이, 일어나. 이제 출발해야지. 이러다 돼지처럼 못 날아다닌다?”

“돼지는 날지 못하거든… 난 풍선처럼 뜰 수 있다고… 흐아암…”

그렇게 시간을 조금 더 허비한 뒤,

결국 용은 꾸역꾸역 일어나 하늘로 떠오를 준비를 시작했다.

잠시 뒤, 공터에 둘러앉아 주인공과 동료들이 조용히 이야기를 나눈다.

주인공은 풀을 뽑으며 중얼거렸다.

“근데, 용이란 존재… 원래 그렇게 느긋했나?”

사제가 고개를 끄덕이며 말했다.

“전설을 보면 꼭 그렇진 않아. 예전엔 분노로 세상을 불태웠다는 말도 있어.”

“성을 날려버렸다는 전설, 그거?”

“그래. 어떤 용은 하늘에서 분노를 뿜어내며 한 도시를 박살냈다고도 하고.

사람들은 왜 그들이 사라졌는지 몰라. 신물났던 걸까, 아니면…

그 화를 견디지 못하고 사라졌던 걸까.”

다들 잠시 침묵에 빠졌다.

그때, 등 뒤에서 커다란 하품 소리가 들렸다.

“흐아암… 하늘은 맑고… 배는 적당히 꺼졌고… 이제 날아도 되겠다!”

살찐 용이 엉거주춤 몸을 일으켜 세우고

바람을 타고 천천히 공중으로 떠오른다.

“봐, 아직 난 날 수 있다니까?”

배가 아래로 쳐진 상태로 둥둥 떠오르는 모습에

주인공은 한숨을 내쉰다.

“그래… 전설의 용들이 저런 모습일 줄 누가 알았겠냐.”

용이 천천히 날아오르며 중얼거렸다.

“뚱뚱하다고 놀리지 마! 나 지금 연료 꽉 찼단 말이야!”

주인공이 킥킥 웃자 용은 등을 도리도리 흔들며 덧붙였다.

“그리고! 그런 말 할 때마다 간식 사주는 거다!!”

“뭐? 왜 내가 간식을…”

“그럼 안 날아! 그보단 무슨 얘길했던거야? 지금이라도 다시 자러 간다?”

“아… 알았어, 알았다고! 진짜 귀찮게 군다니까…”

주인공이 머리를 쓸어 넘기며 투덜거리자,

용은 배를 부풀리며 한 바퀴 빙 돌고는

“그치만~ 그래도 날 수 있지롱~” 하고 장난스럽게 말한다.

왜갑자기 어린애같은거야?

“그러니까 지금은 그런 일 안 생기게 조심하자고.

지금은 우리한테 너밖에 없으니까.”

용은 잠시 말없이 공중에 머물다,

“알았어… 그러니까 밥 잘 챙겨줘.”

라며 장난스럽게 웃는다.

그리고 이들의 여정은 다시 천천히, 그러나 확실하게 움직이기 시작한다.

The morning sun was shining warmly on the vacant lot.

The main character whines as he sweeps his hair,

The dragon swells his stomach and goes around in circles

"But still, I can fly!" he says playfully.

The dragon stays in the air for a while without a word,

"Okay... So please take care of your meal."

He laughs mischievously.

And their journey begins to move slowly but surely again.
