대하35:20

요시아의 마지막은 아무도 예상하지 못한 뜻밖의 죽음이었습니다. 애굽 왕 느고는 요시야를 대적하러 올라오지 않겠다고 밝혔지만, 요시야는 싸움에 나섰고 목숨을 잃었습니다. 하나님의 뜻을 쫓아 살아온 요시야의 마지막이 이렇게 끝나도 되는 것일까? 여기서 우리는 무엇을 배울까? 공주야! 살면서 종종 안타까운 죽음을 본다. 너무 때 이른 죽음, 그것도 선량하고 재능 있는 죽음 앞에서 우리는 망연자실 하고 하나님의 뜻을 거듭거듭 묻게 된다. 그런 느낌이야 자연스럽지만, 그런 생각이 과연 정당할까? 

Josiah's last death was unexpected and no one expected it. Hugo, king of Egypt, said he would not come up to confront Josiah, but Josiah went into battle and lost his life. Is it okay for Josiah, who has lived after God's will, to end like this? What do we learn here? Princess! I often see a sad death in my life. In the face of premature death, good and talented death, we are devastated and ask the will of God over and over again. It feels natural, but is such an idea really justified?

오래 살고 많은 일을 하면 원이 없는 인생인가? 하나님은 애급 왕 느고를 통해서 자신의 뜻을 요시야에게 알리신다. 이방 왕의 입을 통해서도 얼마든지 하나님의 메시지가 전달될 수 있다. 물론 그 자신의 말인지 아니면 하나님의 말씀인지를 분별하는 것은 우리의 몫이고 책임이다. 쉽지 않다. 산헤립도 자신의 침공이 하나님의 뜻이라고 주장하여 신학적인 정당성을 추구하였지만 그것은 헛된 거짓이었기 때문이다. 따라서 내 욕망을 해석하고 읽는 일이 내 바깥의 말을 해석하는 것보다 앞서야 한다.

요시야의 문제는 애급의 전력을 얕잡아 본 것에 있는 것도 아니고, 하나님을 의지하지 않는 데 있는 것도 아니다. 그가 하나님의 뜻과 다르게 결정한 것이 문제였다. 아무리 용의주도하게 변장을 하고 아무리 맹렬하게 싸우고 아무리 하나님의 영광을 위하여 순종하는 것보다 더 우선하는 일은 없다. 하나님이 작정하신 뜻을 피할 수 있는 길은 없다. 하나님의 뜻을 거스르려고 하는 것보다 더 무모한 일은 없다. 요시야는 하나님의 말씀을 따른 왕으로 평가되며, 그의 죽음을 온 나라가 애도할 만큼 존경을 받았다.

Josiah's problem is not because he underestimated the power of Egypt, nor because he did not rely on God. The problem was that he made a different decision than God's will. No matter how bravely you dress up, how fiercely you fight, and how obedient you are to God's glory, nothing takes precedence. There is no way to avoid God's will. There is nothing more reckless than trying to go against God's will. Josiah was regarded as a king according to the word of God, and was respected enough to mourn his death for the whole country.

하지만 의로운 왕도 불순종하면 벌을 받을 수 있음을 그가39 세로 요절한 모습에서 확인할 수 있다. 그의 요절이 그를 향한 하나님의 거절을 의미하지는 않지만, 인생 끝까지 하나님 앞에서 사는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 분명히 보여준다. 때로 그의 이른 죽음과 명예로운 죽음은 유다의 참담한 미래를 생각하면 차라리 하나님의 축복이고 선물이었다. 교회가 기울오지는 시대에 신앙생활을 하고 목회를 하더라도, 그것이 하나님께 대한 순종과 감사를 유보해야 하는 이유가 되지 못한다.

주님, 요시야가 보여줬던 여호와에 대한 경외심을 배우되 하나님을 거슬리지 말라고, 바로 살라고, 외치는 세상 사람들에게 손가락질 받는 인생이 되지 않기를 간절히 기도합니다. 내가 주의 뜻을 거스르지 않기 위해 시대를 바로 분별할 줄 아는 영적인 통찰력을 주시므로 한 때의 성공과 은혜에 안주하지 않고, 오늘도 성령에 사로잡혀 살게 하옵소서.

I pray earnestly that, O Lord, the awe of the Lord that Josiah has shown, but that it will not be a life that will be criticized by the people of the world who say, "Don't offend God." Give me spiritual insight to discern the times immediately so that I may not go against the will of the LORD, but let me live in the Spirit today, not in peace with the success and grace of one moment.
