21. 무비스님의 힘, The Power of Master Mubi

[眞如華]

 무비스님이 주석하는 화엄전 앞에는 수령이 800년쯤 되는 소나무가 있다. 무비스님의 법문 속에 이 소나무가 자주 등장한다.

"가을이 되면 그 소나무에서 씨가 많이 떨어집니다. 그래봐야 아주 조그마한 손톱 크기만한 정도의 솔씨가 떨어져요. 그걸 내가 주워서 ‘이 작은 솔씨에서 저렇게 큰 소나무가 자랐고, 아직도 키가 크고 있고, 매년 솔순이 자라고 또 솔씨가 열린다, 이 작은 솔씨 하나에서 그 모든 것이 생긴다’ 라고 생각하지요."

세상의 여러 기술이 발전할수록 『화엄경』의 이치가 직관적으로 이해하기 쉬워진다. 『화엄경』경전 자체에 접속하기도 쉬워지고 있다.

그러는 한편 온갖 기후 변화와 전세계적으로 강팍하게 변하는 삶의 조건으로 ‘말세가 온 것이 아닌가’ 걱정의 수위가 높아졌다.

“말세에 태어난 것을 안타까워할 필요가 없습니다. 지금이야말로 『화엄경』이 필요한 때입니다. 『화엄경』에서 강조하는 보살행이 우리 화엄행자들이 살아가야 할 길이에요.”

무비스님의 법문에는 힘이 있다.

부처님 마음으로, 불법(佛法)의 가르침 그대로, 밀려오는 온갖 역경을 더 큰 회향의 기회로 바꾸는 삶이 있다는 것을 무비스님의 전생애가 증명했기 때문이다.

 In front of Hwaeomjeon, where Mubi Seunim stays, there is a pine tree that is about 800 years old.

This pine tree often appears in Mubi Seunim's teachings.

“When autumn comes, many seeds fall from that pine tree.

Even so, they are just tiny pine seeds, about the size of a fingernail.

I pick them up and think, 'Such a big pine tree grew from this tiny seed, and it is still growing. Every year, new shoots grow and it makes new seeds. All of this comes from just one tiny seed.'"

As technology advances in the world, the truth of the Avatamsaka Sutra becomes easier to understand intuitively.

It is also becoming easier to access the Avatamsaka Sutra itself.

Meanwhile, with all kinds of climate change and living conditions getting harsher worldwide, people are worrying more: 'Has the end of the world come?'

“There is no need to feel sad about being born in the end times.

Now, more than ever, we need the Avatamsaka Sutra.

The Bodhisattva practice emphasized in the Avatamsaka Sutra is the path we, Hwaeom practitioners, should walk.“

There is great power in Mubi Seunim's teachings.

This is because Mubi Seunim’s whole life proved that, with the Buddha's heart and following the Buddha's teachings, we can turn all hardships into opportunities for greater dedication.
