AT DAWN

A sparrow comes to my yard
Looks around and pecks at crumbs

AT DUSK

A sparrow comes to my yard
Looks around and pecks at crumbs

Whenever I see a sparrow
I always try very hard
Not to look it in the eye

II

Mom works for a couple, both school teachers
Cleaning their house and taking care of their children

Dad works at a construction site
Leaving early every morning
Rain or shine

I am sick today
So I cannot go to school
Still in bed

In my tiny basement room
With a small window
Half above the ground

ARE YOU SICK?
YOU’LL GET BETTER SOON.

Two sparrows have come to visit me
IT’S OKAY IT’S OKAY
They seem to say, comforting me

I think maybe
One came from Mom
The other from Dad

새벽녘

우리 집 마당을 찾아온 참새

두리번거리며

먹이를 먹지요

저물녘

우리 집 마당을 찾아온 참새

두리번거리며

먹이를 먹지요

그때마다

나는 늘

참새와 눈길을 마주치지 않으려고

무던히 애쓰지요

어머니는 부부가 학교 선생님으로 나간다는 집

아이들 봐 주는 파출부로

아버지는 건설 공사장 일꾼으로

새벽같이 나가시고

나는 몸이 아파 학교에도 못 가고

방 안에 가만히 누워 있는데

지하 단칸방

땅 위로 반쯤 나온 창문

어디 아프냐고

금방 나을 거라고

참새 두 마리 찾아와

괜찮다 괜찮다 위로하고 있다

한 마리는 어머니가 시켜서 온 것 같고

한 마리는 아버지가 시켜서 온 것 같고

Appreciation Review 感想

‘Two Sparrows’ by D.J. Yoon gently touch the heart with their quiet beauty and warm feelings.

In the first poem, a small sparrow visiting at dawn and dusk turns an ordinary moment into something full of wonder, as if the little bird carries a secret the child can almost understand.
