DONGHAE/INCHEON, South Korea, April 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's customs authorities and Coast Guard has seized approximately 2 tons of smuggled cocaine on a foreign vessel docked on the country's east coast, officials said Thursday.
​
At around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Donghae regional office of the Coast Guard and the Seoul Regional Customs deployed around 90 personnel to search the ship docked at a port in Gangneung after receiving a tip-off from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
​
The FBI had warned that a 32,000-ton carrier suspected of carrying drugs was entering Korean waters on the day, according to the officials.
The Norwegian-flagged vessel is believed to have departed from Mexico and traveled through Ecuador, Panama and China before arriving in Korea.

Authorities discovered 57 boxes containing packages with about 1 kilogram of cocaine each, totaling 2 tons, hidden aboard the ship.
The seized drugs have an estimated market value of 1 trillion won (US$679.6 million), equivalent to around 67 million doses.

According to the Korea Customs Service, this marks the country's largest-ever drug bust in terms of weight.
​
Authorities said they are investigating the ship's captain and crew to determine the origin and destination of the drugs. They also plan to expand the investigation into possible links to an international drug trafficking organization in cooperation with the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

강원도 강릉에 입항한 외국 무역선에서 1t 규모의 마약이 발견돼 관계 당국이 수사에 나섰다.

관세청과 해양경찰청은 2일 멕시코를 출발해 에콰도르, 파나마, 중국 등을 경유해 강릉시 옥계항에 입항한 A 선박에 마약이 은닉됐다는 정보를 미국 연방수사국(FBI)과 국토안보수사국(HSI)으로부터 입수해 수색한 결과 코카인으로 추정되는 1t 규모의 마약을 발견했다고 밝혔다. 이 같은 적발 규모는 관세청 적발 사상 최대 규모다.

관세청 등에 따르면 A 선박은 3만2000t 규모로 외국인 승선원 20명을 태운 채, 지난 1월 멕시코를 출발한 것으로 알려졌다.

관계 당국은 지난 1일 이 같은 정보를 입수한 직후 해당 선박에 대한 합동 검색 작전을 수립했다. 185m에 달하는 선박의 길이를 고려해 서울세관과 동해해경청 마약 수사 요원 90명과 세관 마약 탐지견 2팀 등이 포함된 대규모 합동 검색팀을 구성했다.

옥계항에서 대기하던 합동 검색팀은 A 선박이 2일 오전 6시 30분쯤 도착하자, 곧바로 선박에 올라 집중 수색을 실시했다. 그 결과 선박 기관실 뒤편에 있는 밀실에서 1t에 육박하는 마약 의심 물질을 찾아냈다. 간이 시약으로 물질을 긴급 검사한 결과, 코카인 의심 물질로 확인됐다. 관세청 관계자는 “적발 가액만 5000억원이고 200만명이 동시에 투약이 가능할 정도로 많은 규모”라고 말했다. 관세청은 정확한 중량은 하선 이후 정밀 계측기를 통해 측정하고, 마약 종류는 국립과학수사연구원에 의뢰해 최종 확인할 예정이다.

관세청과 해경청은 향후 합동수사팀을 운영해 해당 선박 선장과 선원 등 20여 명을 대상으로 밀수 공모 여부와 적발된 마약 출처, 밀반입 경로, 최종 목적지 등에 대해 수사할 계획이다. 또 선박에 타고 있던 선원들이 국제 마약 밀매 조직과 연관됐을 가능성을 확인하기 위해 미국 연방수사국, 국토안보수사국 등 관계 기관들과 공조를 통해 수사를 확대한다는 방침이다.
