Column - Why did Peter tell them to receive the Holy Spirit?
“Then Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” (Acts 2:38)
1. The core of Peter's sermon was that God had made Jesus, whom Israel had crucified without knowing he was the Messiah, both Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36).
We didn't know He was the Messiah! What should we do?
In fact, in the Old Testament, salvation meant looking to and believing in Christ, who would come, suffer, rise again, and be glorified.
Although they were blind in Jesus' time, they were saved if they knew that the Lord came with the Father, died on the cross, rose again, and returned to the Father to be glorified.
Now, salvation means that Jesus Christ has sent the Holy Spirit to enable us to believe that we are in Christ and Christ is in us, and so approaching the throne of God's grace.
The Bible tells us our position, and the Holy Spirit confirms it.
2. If he were a preacher today, he would say that Jesus, crucified, is our Savior, and that if we believe in Him, our sins be forgiven and we will go to heaven if we follow his teachings. He would also tell us to believe and practice this with all our heart.
However, Peter, as a redemption for those who had overlooked the truth that Jesus is Lord and Christ, told them to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
He, too, doubted whether Jesus was the Messiah, denied Him three times, and went to Galilee. Then, just as the resurrected Lord had instructed, the Lord found him and invited him to participate in the redemption.
After receiving the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, he realized that without the Holy Spirit, he could not be certain, as he had been, that Jesus was Lord and Christ.
Furthermore, he realized that it was impossible to confess, like David, that he see the Lord that seated on the throne always before him.
And he realized that it was impossible to call the Lord seated at the right hand of God Lord and call upon his name (Acts 2:21, 25, 35).
3. That's why Peter didn't tell us to believe in Jesus and go to heaven, but to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, no one can believe that Jesus is their personal Savior (1 Corinthians 12:3).
That's why it's embarrassing to confess the full name of Jesus Christ.
They know Jesus, but they lack confidence in the Lord Christ.
So, Paul's message of "Believe in the Lord Jesus" (Acts 16:31) is also accepted as a message of believing in Jesus.
Paul was telling us to believe in Christ as the Lord, who died, rose again, sat on the throne, and sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us.
Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot become one with Christ, who is the Spirit.
The word “only the Bible” means that the Bible was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is received through the Bible, so that the objective words of the Bible become subjective through the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, it is said that the Holy Spirit works along the tracks of the Bible.
4. Now, the question is how to receive the Holy Spirit.
When we repent and receive forgiveness of sins through baptism (baptism) that unites us with the death and resurrection of Christ, the Holy Spirit comes in us as a gift.
However, repentance for our past actions, even if we spend our entire lives, will only be a feeling of relief, without any relation to the Holy Spirit.
After realizing the sin of missing out on the fact that Jesus is the Christ and that standing against Christ makes one a slave to sin and death and is destined to end up in the lake of fire, one realizes the desperate realization that one is doomed if one continues this way, and entrusts oneself to the death of Christ and realizes the meaning of baptism, which is to unite with the Lord's resurrection and life.
Baptism does not mean washing away sins, but rather dying to sin and being resurrected again, and gaining the righteousness and life in Christ.
Through this, if you receive forgiveness of sins, the Holy Spirit comes automatically into us.
The Holy Spirit does not come by pulling.
The Holy Spirit only appears externally to those who are sinful (Epi).
The Holy Spirit comes into those whose sins have been dealt with (An).
From then on, He makes us know the truth, the fact that we were sanctified , and that we have become a challenger for glory.
The Holy Spirit, like a tutor, groans and teaches us to be conformed to the image of the Son of God (Romans 8:26).
In the face of the tremendous fact that Jesus, whom humans crucified, came into our midst and became the Christ, the Savior of each individual and the High Priest to God, we cannot preach sermons like these, “Believe in Jesus and walk with Jesus.”
To become Lord and Christ, Jesus took the curse of the cross and redeemed us from the curse of the law. We must repent and baptize according to the merits of Jesus' atonement, which allows us to receive the blessings of Abraham and the Holy Spirit through faith. Through these, we receive forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit, and are saved from this corrupt generation (Acts 2:40).
Therefore, the Holy Spirit is essential.
