Why did Lousia May Alcott write Little Women?
How does the book relate to her life?
Lousia May Alcott was born in Germantown, PA on November 29, 1832. She had a passion for writing and published over 30 books and collections of stories before her death March 6th, 1888. Growing up in Boston and Concord, Massachusetts, she would frequently visit Ralph Waldo Emerson's library. This fostered her love for literature.
By the age of 15 her family sank into the poverty hole. She was determined to do something with her life. She considered everything from a teacher to a household servant. During this time it was difficult for women to become employed, but her determination saw her through.
Louisa's career began with poetry and short stories that appeared in popular magazines. At the age of 35 Louisa was asked to write a book for girls. Little Women was written at Orchard House from May to July 1868.
The character Jo was similar to Louisa because they were both tomboys. I believe she made the character Jo to reflect her struggles in life. She could easily write about a character she knew better than anyone in the world. Louisa May Alcott's story Little Women gave all women during this time period hope. The character Jo was a real person, not afraid to speak up for herself and I believe she changed the thinking for many women.
