22. 무비스님의 인연

 2024년 9월 즈음에 무비스님은 ‘장대교망(張大敎網) 녹인천지어(漉人天之魚)’ 라는 내용이 적힌 도장 이야기를 법문 속에서 자주 이야기한다.

칠팔십 년 전, 범어사 원효암 우물을 치우며 발견한 그 도장은 범어사의 보물로 지정되었다.

‘큰 그물을 펼쳐서 『화엄경』 가르침으로써 이 세상 중생들을 다 건진다’는 뜻의 이 도장을 무비스님은 건당식을 하면서, 전법계보의 한 중앙에 붉은 인주로 찍었다.

“이 도장은 틀림없이 원효스님이 만드시고 사용하신 도장일 것입니다. 원효암에 불이 났을 때 누군가 불을 피해 우물 속으로 이 도장을 던졌을 거예요.”

2024년의 무비스님은 이 도장을 ‘부처님의 높고 큰 가르침을 널리 펴서 모든 사람, 모든 생명을 다 교화하리라’ 라고 다시 해석하고, 보자기에도 확대 인쇄하여 찍어서 화엄전 곳곳에 걸어 두고 틈날 때마다 본다고 하였다.

22. Master Mubi's Karmic Connections

 Around September 2024, Mubi Seunim often shared a story about a seal in his Dharma talks. The seal had a phrase carved on it, 'Spread the great net of teachings to save humans and heavenly beings like fish in a net.'

Seventy or eighty years ago, this seal was found while cleaning a well at Wonhyoam of Beomeosa Temple. Later, it was designated as an official treasure of Beomeosa Temple.

During the Dharma Succession ceremony, Mubi Seunim stamped this seal in red ink right in the center of the Dharma lineage chart. This seal carries the meaning:

'Spread a great net and save all living beings in this world through the teachings of the Avatamsaka Sutra.'

"This seal was surely made and used by Venerable Wonhyo. When a fire broke out at Wonhyoam, someone must have thrown this seal into the well to protect it from the fire.”

In 2024, Mubi Seunim gave this seal a new meaning: ‘Spread the great teachings of the Buddha to enlighten all people and all living beings.' He printed enlarged copies of the seal on cloths, hung them all around Hwaeomjeon, and said he looks at them whenever he has a spare moment.
