(Jer18:1–6, Mt 13:47–53): Teach Us Your Wisdom, That All Things May Become Beautiful
“Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.” (Jer 18:6)
Indeed, the beginning of our lives was not by our own will, and our present is a living mystery that we cannot weave through our strength alone. Our future, too, lies beyond the limits of our own design, entrusted entirely to the providence of the Lord.
Yet, I wish to confess that everything that has taken place across the time and space we have walked has truly been a continuation of blessings and grace molded within the Lord's love—even when those moments were not always colored with positivity and bright light.
Rather, it is impossible to deny that shadows and dark places were cast over our memories—over the family environments and surrounding influences we had no choice but to accept, and over the lives we lived while shaped by those conditions. Even so, through the light, our gratitude deepened for the joy granted us to live in this world; and through the darkness, our wisdom grew to understand and embrace the deep sorrow of those who carry shaded pains in their lives.
Because we had bright laughter, we could embrace others and become a place of rest where they might find peace. Because we had tears, we could offer a place in our souls to weep alongside them. Because we experienced joy, we had a reserve of love to give to others even when times of hardship and endurance arrived. And because we faced unbearable agony, we learned the courage to put down our pride and seek God with a poor and humble heart.
When we look back on the past, holding fast to God and leaning on His love, we come to humbly confess that the things we failed to understand at those exact moments were, in the end, a finely woven net of love without a single missing thread—a delicate blueprint drawn specifically for even one lowly person.
In Matthew 13:52, the Lord tells us, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” When we stand beside the Lord one day, everything that once cast a shadow over our lives will unfold in just such a way.
The journal of the life we have woven will also be revealed clearly. Yet, as long as those footprints belong to a journey lived in humble reliance on God, we must live without ever forgetting that we can accept them just as they are—and that God is both the merciful Lord who will embrace us as we are, and the true Master of our lives and souls.
Although there was nothing we could fashion on our own, the responsibility to cultivate our lives remains entrusted to us. Today, May we learn that true wisdom which allows us to contemplate, meditate upon, and beautifully fulfill everything given to us in life, just as God embraces us in His boundless love. Amen.
