COTTONWOOD

I
Cottonwood paints surprisingly
Standing in a row

By the river in my town
The sky is a drawing paper

Sometimes cottonwood

Whenever it meets gentle breeze

A brush all over itself

Over the sky draws a picture

On a summer day

After having a cold bath in the river

I would dry my wet body
While lying down on the gravel patch

Clouds in the sky
Seeming to be working so, so hard

Not trying to erase any of the artwork

Of that Poplar’s

DOST THOU LOVE ME
AS I LOVE THEE
Cottonwood, I asked

She shook her leaves

Gently without Replying

DOST THOU LOVE ME
AS I LOVE THEE
River, I asked

She flowed with putting arms around the shoulders
Carelessly without Resounding

DOST THOU LOVE ME
AS I LOVE THEE
Bird, I asked

She flew without leaving a trace in the air

Silently without Echoing

미루나무도 그림 그릴 줄 안다

우리 마을 강가에 늘어선

미루나무는

하늘이 도화지다

미루나무는 온몸이 붓이 되어

살랑살랑 바람이 불 때마다

하늘에다

그림을 그린다

여름날

강에서 멱을 감고 나와

자갈밭에 드러누워

몸을 말리다 보니

하늘의 구름이

미루나무가 그리는 그림을

지우게 될까 봐

무지무지 애쓰고 있다

내 그대를 사랑하는 것과 같이

그대 날 사랑하는지

미루나무에게 물어보았지요

미루나무는 대답 대신

잎새를 살랑살랑 흔들었지요

내 그대를 사랑하는 것과 같이

그대 날 사랑하는지

강물에게 물어보았지요

강물은 대답 대신

저희끼리 어깨동무하고 무심히 흘렀지요

내 그대를 사랑하는 것과 같이

그대 날 사랑하는지

새에게 물어보았지요

새는 대답 대신

허공에 자취 남기지 않고 날았지요
