Joey and I crouch beside the kittens, trying to stay still and silent. 'Ah, Miss Quonn, good, good,' Mr McKenzie's voice boons out. the classical music CD reaches an  loud and rumbly bit, then gets cut off rudely in midstream. 'We don't need that, do we?'

하지만 삶에 대한 그의 생각은 달라집니다. 삶을 더욱 소중하게 여기게 되지요. 반면, 우리 대부분은 삶을 당연한 것으로 여깁니다. 언젠가는 우리도 죽는다는 사실을 알지만 먼 미래의 일로 생각하지요. 건강할 때는 죽음을 상상조차 하지 않아요. 우리 삶이 끝없이 계속된다고 생각해서, 우리가 삶에 얼마나 무관심한지 깨닫지 못한 채 사소한 일에 매달립니다.
