I

I like to play in the sand

In my village by the river

I play by myself after school

Until the sun goes down

I walk around in the sand

Carelessly sitting on it

I stare my footprints

Blankly for a long time

My footprints then in the sand

With those of my friend’s

I find all the footprints

Sparsely mixed up in the sand

MY ONES and HIS ONES

Becoming friendly to each other

Talking in small whispers

I can hear them in my heart

That's maybe why

I like to play in the sand

By the river in my village eosigi

I love the sandy bank

By the river in our village

When I come home from school
I go to the sandy riverbank

And play there all by myself
Until the day grows dark

I wander here and there across the sand
Then plop myself down

And quietly gaze for a long while
At the footprints pressed into the sand

Then the footprints in the sand
Seem not to be only mine
It feels as if my friends' footprints are

Scattered among them too

My footprints and my friends' footprints
Seem to be chatting together
Warmly and fondly
In soft little whispers I can almost hear

Maybe that's why, more than anything else
I dearly love the sandy bank

By the river in our village
I love it ever so, ever so much.

Eosigi: a dialect word from the Gyeongsang region meaning “very” or “extremely.”

모래밭

나는 우리 마을 강가 모래밭이 좋아요

학교 갔다 오면

강가 모래밭에 가서

날이 저물도록 나 혼자 놀지요

모래밭을 이리저리 걷다가

모래밭에 퍼질러 앉아

모래밭에 찍힌 내 발자국을

한참 물끄러미 바라보지요

그러면 모래밭에 찍힌 발자국

내 발자국만 아니고

내 동무의 발자국도

다문다문 섞여 있는 것 같아요

내 발자국과 내 동무의 발자국이

서로 정답게

소곤소곤 이야기를 나누는 게

내 귀에 들리는 것 같아요

그래서일까

나는 무엇보다도

우리 마을 강가 모래밭이 어시기 좋아요

우리 마을 강가 모래밭이 무지무지 좋지요

*어시기: ‘매우’의 경상도 사투리
