Principal resigns after Islamic groups distributed copies of Quran at Texas high school
A Texas high school principal has resigned following a national controversy over the school's decision to allow copies of the Quran and other Islamic materials to be distributed on campus by an outside group.
Wylie Independent School District, located about 20 miles northeast of Dallas, has accepted the resignation of Wylie East High School Principal Tiffany Doolan, who stepped down after 19 years with the district, a spokesperson told The Christian Post.
The resignation comes more than three months after an incident in February at Wylie East HS in which an outside religious group distributed Quran copies and other Islamic materials on campus without required district approval. The "Why Islam?" event, organized in connection with the school's Muslim Student Association and World Hijab Day activities, prompted widespread criticism from parents and drew national attention.
Doolan notified Wylie ISD Superintendent Kim Spicer of her decision on May 26. The district announced the resignation and released a detailed statement on May 28 addressing the circumstances surrounding her departure.
The Wylie ISD statement read in part: "From the beginning, the district acknowledged that the situation should never have occurred and that serious mistakes were made. The district, Board of Trustees and campus leadership publicly apologized, accepted responsibility for the procedural failure and took immediate action to address the matter. Corrective measures were implemented, and procedures were strengthened to help prevent such a situation from happening again."
The school district also denied promoting Islam or any other "religion, politics, or ideology and strongly believes those matters belong between students and their families, adding, "The district has communicated transparently with Wylie East parents, the community, and the media throughout this matter. Assertions that the district intentionally promoted a religion, attempted to hide facts, or failed to address the matter are false."
Wylie ISD initially cited a procedural failure after a student at Wylie East HS posted a now-viral video on social media in which he claimed Islamic religious literature — including a pamphlet advocating for Sharia law — was distributed on campus. The student, later identified as Marco Hunter-Lopez, told the House Judiciary Committee earlier this month that he faced death threats over the video.
Criticism later intensified after photos resurfaced showing Doolan wearing a hijab during previous student-led World Hijab Day events on campus.
Despite the backlash over the photos, the school district defended Doolan's participation and clarified the incident occurred before the passage of Senate Bill 12, a 2025 law that imposes restrictions on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in K–12 public and open-enrollment charter schools.
"The activities depicted in those photos were student-led and occurred before the implementation of Senate Bill 12, which took effect in September 2025 and significantly changed how student organizations may operate in public schools," the district said. "Like many educators, Mrs. Doolan participated in student activities intended to build relationships and help students feel seen and valued."
In its statement, Wylie ISD denied that images of Doolan and others wearing a hijab constituted a religious endorsement: "Those photos have now been reframed through the lens of the unrelated procedural failure and inaccurately portrayed as evidence that Mrs. Doolan or Wylie ISD promoted a religion or political ideology. That characterization is false."
Doolan shared her decision to resign in a statement to students and families, a decision she called "difficult and bittersweet."
The statement read in part: "Over the last several weeks, I've spent a lot of time praying and reflecting about what is best for my family, and ultimately, I've decided this is the best decision for us. As I've thought about what I wanted to say in this letter, I kept coming back to gratitude.
"Thank you for trusting me to lead this school and for allowing me to serve your family. As a principal and a parent, I know there is no greater responsibility than being entrusted with someone else's child, and I have never taken that responsibility lightly."
The district will now begin the process of hiring a new principal for Wylie East HS, where Doolan served as principal for six years.

Wylie East High School Principal Tiffany Doolan resigned following a controversy where an outside group distributed Qurans and hijabs on campus, while a student testified that his junior high school in the same district allowed the Quran but banned the Bible. Doolan did not distribute the texts herself but was criticized for promoting World Hijab Day and allegedly being present during the unauthorized distribution, while the school district defended the event as a procedural failure rather than endorsement.
