We are proud to present the first Ferrum Aeternum official preview
Ferrum Aeternum (Eternal Iron) began life as the Medieval Historical Events Project, but our ambitions, under the leadership of Ataegina, quickly took off and now, with a team of just 8, we have launched into a gigantic, spectacular total conversion.
General Info
Ferrum Aeternum (FA) opens in 1099, at the dawning of a new and exciting century, just after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem; and will end in 1453 when, historically, Constantinople fell to the Turks and the last remnants of the Roman Empire were extinguished. These 454 years are played through with 2 turns per year, giving an expansive, intense and occasionally frantic campaign.
I can assure you we have worked hard to get the most out of the MII:TW engine; maxing out the unit limit, the Faction limit, the Map limit, the Culture and Religion limit – in fact no limits have withstood our modding onslaught!
Factions and Units
The Americas and Aztecs have been removed, but we have made up for this with certain new appendages, a few of which you can see later. Some Factions will remain a secret for the moment, but some of the new additions are The Kingdom of Georgia, The Kingdom of Raska and The Rajput States. Kingdom Of Georgia

The Map We have been very ambitious with the map, and are in the early stages of crafting one stretching from the Canary Islands to Bangladesh and from Finland to the Horn of Africa. This is arguably the largest map TWC has ever seen, and we are very excited about the possiblities this map will offer us. You can see can an early screenshot of the minimap below.
Historical Events
We have not neglected our origins, and in addition to plenty of new historic event pop-ups, there will be faction specific events too: events that may well have an effect on how you will progress in the game. On the historical theme, we will have new faction, unit and building descriptions, all of which have been deeply researched. There are also hundreds of additional names for all factions and new titles, traits and ancillaries.
Graphical Aspects The whole look of the game has been re-done. From new UI’s to new Princess portraits to new strat models, no graphical element has been overlooked.

General Info When we presented our first preview, one of the last thing to be added in preview was a new map. We will have one of the biggest maps here at TWC. The size of the map make us replace some factions which was originally on the list with new not so common factions among TW mods. Those new factions are spread over eastern and south-eastern parts of the map. With that decision we was try to make nice balance and improve gameplay, which will give all present factions more chance of survival. We also move start year from 1099 to 1174 to accommodate new situation.
Besaide new exotic factions we will have five different cultures, each one with unique interface. There will be new scripts, new military orders, new buildings, new music, and much much more.

Khwarezm Shahdom
Faction Description
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Khwarezm has long and glorious history, originaly it was part of mighty Persian empire and latter it became part of Muslim Caliphate after the Arab conquest of Persia in 7th century AD. Located in central Asia, fertile Khwarezmian valleys and fields ( irrigated with cleverly designed system of dams and chanells ) as well as astonishing wealth and beauty of Khwarezmian cities allways attracted various Turcic tribes from the Asian steppes and other less civilized people. In 992. Khwarezm became part of powerfull Ghaznavid sultanate of Afghanistan and in 1077. it was conquered by the Seljuk Turks and it became part of the Great Seljuk Empire. When he captured Khwarezm from the Ghaznavids, Seljuk sultan Malik Shah apointed his Turcic slave Anush Tigin Gharchai for governor of province with the title of Shah or King. Altough theoreticaly Seljuk vassals Anush and his offsprings were practicaly independent and their fief became one of the most powerfull states in central Asia, known as Khwarezm Shah. Exploiting advanced farming in the river valleys of Amu Darya and Sir Darya and lucrative silk trade of famous Silk Road, Khwarezmian shahs managed to create wealthy state famous for it's culture, art and education. Some of the most prominent Muslim scientists like mathematician al-Khwarizmi and famous polymath Biruni were Khwarizmians and the wealth and glow of Khwarizmian cities of Urgench, Bukhara and Samarkand were worldwide known and legendary. Unfortunately peacefull existence never was mented for Khwarezm, steppes and deserts of central Asia were spawning places of numerous nomad tribes and states which lured for the wealth of Khwarezm. As descencents of Turcic and Skythic people themselves, Khwarezmians were skilfull in horsemanship and fierce in battle and they were often in wars against it's neighbours Seljuks at south, Karakhanids at east and Kypchaks at north. As formal suzerain of Khwarezm, Great Seljuk is biggest opponent of Khwarezmian shahs who are seeking to gain full independence altough the newly created Khara Khitai empire in east is more dangerous enemy. In 1141. Khara Khitais defeated Seljuks near Samarkand and Khwarezm Shah was forced to became Kittan vassal remaining in the same time the vassal of Seljuks. This uneasy position lasted 'till 1156. when, after the death of Seljuk Sultan Ahmed Sanjar, shah Il-Arslan finaly breaked it's bondage to Seljuks and captured large parts of Seljuk Khorasan province. Enstrengthen and encouraged with this succes Il-Arslan decided to break it's vassalage to Kara Khitais and he stoped to pay regular annual tribute making the Khwarezm fully independent state and first rate power in Central Asia seeking to expand it's territories on account of Iranian Seljuks while on the other hand still fearing from Khara Khitans and various nomad tribes emerging from Asian steppes.

Khara Khitai Khanate
Faction Description
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Strange events led to creation of Khara Khitan khanate. In 907. Yelu clan of nomadic Khitan people formed powerful state comprising most of the Mongolia and part of Northern China. This state was known under the name of Liao or simply Kitay and it was ruled by the emperors of Yelu clan which became gradually sinified by adoption of Chinese culture and administrative system, as well as Buddhist religion. In difference to their emperors and nobles, bulk of Khitan people resisted influences of Chinese culture and preserved it's language, culture and customs of nomadic steppe people, most notably the supreme military skills of steppe horsemen for which they were renowned all across Asia. Nevertheless, years of cohabitation with Chinese people and enjoying the benefits of civilization slowly led to weakening of Khitan character and their military strength. Once powerful state started to decline and became a pray for it's nomad neighbors of Mongol and Turcic origine which sought to replace Khitans as rulers of China. Finally a powerful coalition of Jurchen and Song managed to destroy Liao empire and conquer it's lands in 1125. Faced with victorious Jurchen offense Khitan nobleman Yelu Dashi, member of ruling Yelu clan, gathered most of his tribesmen, sources say more than 100,000 of them, and led them westward to the steppes of central Asia where he submitted Uyghurs of Sinkjang and formed new state known as Khara Kitai khanate. With army consisted of Khitan, Uyghurs, Tibetans and Karluks Yelu Dashi quickly expanded his empire on account of other nomad tribes, after he defeated and subjugated Khara-Khanids Yelu Dashi went into conflict with mighty Seljuk Turks who controlled Iran and surrounding areas. Clash between Seljuks and Khara Kitans at Samarkand ended with defeat of Seljuks and Khara Khitan khanate expanded further west and became most powerful state in central Asia, turning neighboring states and tribes into it's vassals and subjects. Yelu Dashi and his successors, known as Gurkhans or Universal Khans, created powerful state with sophisticate end exotic culture based on mix of Chinese, Turic and Persian influences. Many of Khitans also adopted Nestorian Christianity from their Uyghur subjects and this fact along with constant strife with Seljuks and other Turcic states led some people to identify Khara Kitai with legendary kingdom of Prester John from which western world expected help in fight against the Muslims in Holy Land. Regardless how powerful Khara Khitai may seemed to westerners it’s position is still far from secure, vassal states like Khwarezm and Khara-Khanids, almost powerful as their suzerain, will use every suitable occasion to break their vassalage, while on the other hand, nomad hordes from Mongolia and Siberia represent constant threats to nearby civilized states.

Ghaznavid Empire
Faction Description
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Ghaznavid empire was first of numerous states created by the Turkic mamelukes ( slaves ) in service of Muslim rulers of Persia. Beginnings of Ghaznavid empire are related with the downfall of Samanid rulers of Persia in 10th century. Last Samanids started to buy Turcic slaves from central Asia and use them as soldiers in wars against their opponents in Iran and Iraq. It didn't take long for enterprising mamelukes to start acting on their own and betraying their Samanid masters whose power was already in decline, in 962. Turkic general Alp Tegin established himself in strategically important city of Ghazni in Afghanistan gorges and founded dynasty which will have major role in history of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. Ghaznavid power reached it's peak during the reign of Mahmud of Ghazni ( 997-1030 ), one of the most famous Muslim warriors in history. Mahmud spent his life in constant warfare against his neighbors and he extended his state from Euphrates to Ganges after defeating and subjugation of Samanids, Buwayhids, Kharakhanids and many other states and tribes. Most famous were Mahmud's campaigns in India against Shahi and Rajput kings of Punjab and Rajastan. It is said, according to Ferdowsi, that Mahmud led 17 expeditions against India and that he gathered such wealth that no man had seen it before. In 1008. Mahmud defeated army of Rajput confederacy and he expanded his suzerainty across the Northern India areas of Punjab and Sindh, turning local Hindu, Buddhist and Jain kings into his vassals and collecting enormous tributes from them. Being enstrengthen with this successes, Mahmud was first Ghaznavid ruler who took the title of Sultan and broke his ( purely theoretical ) vassalage to Caliphe of Baghdad. After Mahmuds death Ghaznavid empire started to decline mostly due to constant fighting with the Seljuks which eventually lead to lost of western Khorasan and Khwarezm. Although weakened, Ghaznavid Sultanate remaines first rate power in affairs of politics of Iran and India but their power is constantly being challenged by the Seljuks, Rajput rulers of Hindustan and various Turko-Mongolic tribes and states from the steppes of central Asia, especially Khara Khitai khante and Khwarezm shah. In addition to this foreign enemies Ghaznavid states suffer also from internal dynastic wars and rebellions of local governors trying to gain independence, this lack of internal cohesion represents biggest danger for position of Ghaznavids in uneasy areas of Middle East and Indian subcontinent. Mahmud and his successors were also great patrons of literature, science and arts, some of the most prominent scholars of Muslim world, such as Ferdowsi, lived and worked at court in Ghazni, although Ferdowsi later complained on Mahmud being cheapskate. Ghaznavide state and culture were thoroughly Persianized and Islamized acting as vanguard of Islam and Persian culture in Aghanistan, Pakistan and India.

Kingdom of Makuria
Faction Description
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Makuria is one of the ancient Nubian kingdoms which beginnings are lost in the darkness of the long gone centuries. It's believed that Makuriae merged in the 5th century after the fall of the mighty Kushite Kingdom along with other Nubian kingdoms like Nobatia and Alodia, all of them influenced by the old Egyptian culture and religion. The turning point of Makurian history was adoption of Christianity which came from Byzantine Egypt during the 6th century, however Makuria later adopted Monophysite Christianity in his Coptic form which also became predominant in Egypt and Ethiopia. At it’s prime Makuria stretched from 4th to 6th Cataract of Nile, with center in city of Dongola and with Faras and Qasr Ibrim as other important cities and with economy mostly based on trade and developed farming in the irrigated valley of Nile river. While keeping good relations with fellow Monophysite Ethiopia at south Makuria had major troubles at north were especially after the Arab conquest of Egypt in 7th century. When they captured Egypt, Arabs started with attacks on Makuria’s north border which eventually led to battle near Dongola in 652. where supreme Makurian military skill, especially in archery, gave them upper hand. After the battle Makuria and Arabs reached agreement known as bakt which guaranteed peaceful relations in following years as well as free trade. Peace and free trade with Egypt ensured prosperity for Makuria, and export of ivory, ostrich, cattle and slaves made Makurian kings, known as Negus, one of the richest rulers of known world. Makurian art and culture were flourishing and marvelous Cathedrals ornamented it’s cities, while Makurian pottery and other products were renowned on all coast of Indian ocean. Makurian Golden age came to the end when Ayyubids ascended to Egyptian throne in 1171. Unlike their Shi’it predecessors Fatimids, Ayyubids were orthodox Muslims which sought to spread light of true faith beyond their borders. After the centuries of peaceful coexistence with Islam, Makuria is once again target of Arab invaders who managed to took important Makurian city of Qasr Ibrim in the first strike, after numerous skirmishes peace was reached at the cost of increased tribute, but this uneasy trust is not likely to be maintained, not with mighty Ayyubid Sultan Salah ed Din, famous enemy of Christian faith, ruling the powerful northern neighbour.
