제주도(Jejudo)

선생님은 위하는 마음을 가지고 하나님을 위하고, 인류를 위하고, 세계를 위하고, 만물을 위하는 것입니다. 만물까지 해방시켰잖아요? 그래서 바다를 위하는 것입니다. 1960년대에는 한국의 산을 안 들른 데가 없습니다. 그리고 1963년부터 배를 만들었습니다. 그것이 천승호(天勝號)입니다. 세상에 배를 천승호라고 하는것이 어디 있습니까? 그게 다 뜻이 있는 것입니다. 하늘이 승리했다는 기준을 세우기 위해서 지금까지 배를 지어 왔습니다.

미국에 오면서부터 배를 짓기 시작한 것이아닙니다. 1963년부터 배를 짓기 시작해서 지금까지 배를 탄 것입니다. 1973년, 1983년, 1993년, 24년동안 배를 탔습니다. 아침부터 밤 열두 시까지, 어떤 때는 알래스카에서는 세 시까지, 밤이나 낮이나 배를 탔습니다. 일편단심 배를 탄 것입니다. (294-54, 1998.6.10)

With a heart of serving others, I have livedfor the sake of God, humanity, the world and all of creation. Didn’t I liberate creation? That is why I am living for the sake of the ocean. In the 1960s, there wasn’t a mountain that I hadn’t visited. And in 1963, I designed a boat. That was the Boat of Heavenly Victory. Who in this world would call their boat, the "Boat of Heavenly Victory"? There was a reason behind all this. I have been building boats until now in order to establish the standard of Heaven’s victory.

I started to build boats even before coming to America. I began making boats in 1963 and have been sailing boats to this day. During the years 1973, 1983, 1993, I have been going onboats for twenty-four years. I rode on the boats from morning to twelve at night. At times Iwould go on boats until three in the morning in Alaska. With determination, I rode on boats with single-mindedness. (294-54, 1998.6.10)

In the last paragraph, TF says, "….for twenty-four years." But the numbers

don’t add up when looking at the preceding 1973, 1983, 1993….

한국에서 배를 만들었는데 그 이름이 ‘천승호(天勝號)’입니다. 무엇이 이겼다구요? 천승호, 하늘이 승리하는데, 하나님의 뜻을 이루어낸다 그 뜻입니다. 벌써 그때부터 시작한 것입니다. 천승호를 만들어 가지고 그때 세계의 바다를 점령하자고 얘기한 것입니다. 유효영이란 사나이는 ‘배 배!’ 하다가 이 배를 만들어 주니까 나이 많아서 그런지 배 타기를 싫어했습니다.

‘선생님, 이렇게 파도 칠 때는 난 못 나갑니다.’ 했습니다. 어부가 그럴 수 있습니까? 죽기 전에는 나가야 하는것입니다. (294-175, 1998.6.14)

I made a boat in Korea called the "Boat of Heavenly Victory." What victory? Heavenly victory, of course, is where Heaven has won victory. It means that God’s will has been fulfilled. I had already begun doing that from 1963. I made the Boat of Heavenly Victory and talked about occupying the oceans of the world. A fellow called Hyo Young Yoo was constantly saying, "Boat, boat!" so I made him one, but he didn’t like going on boats—maybe because he was old.

He said, "Father, I cannot go out to sea when the waves surge like that." How can a fisherman be like that? He must go out to the sea until his death. (294-175, 1998.6.14)

In fifth sentence, the original words read, "…begun doing that from then."

Since "then" is unclear, we changed it to "1963" based on the information

contained in the previous excerpts. If date or meaning is incorrect, then

please change it.

고기를 잡기 시작하면 고기 나르는 배가있어야 되니까 자연히 운수사업과 연결되는 것입니다. 그리고 중동의 석유를 실어 나를 수 있는원거리 오일탱크 배(유조선)를 몇 십만 톤까지도 만들어야 되는 것입니다. 세계적인 조선소를 향하려면 밑창 것까지 모든 것을 다 갖춰놓아야 된다는 것입니다. 이제 도면만 있으면 무엇이든 만들 수 있는 기술을 확보했다는 것입니다. 그 다음에 고기를 잡으려면 우리가 그물을 만들어야 합니다. 그물 만드는 데서부터 모든 것을 다 할 수 있는 훈련도 돼 있습니다. (262-243, 1994.8.1)

Once you start to catch fish, you require boats to carry the fish, and as a result this naturally leads to the shipping business. We have to make long distance oil tankers thatare some tens of thousands of tons in weight that can carry and transport the oil from the Middle East. If we hope to become a global shipyard, we should prepare everything that we need, starting from the very bottom. I have secured the technology that will enable us to build anything as long as we have a blueprint. After that, if we plan to catch fish,we must make nets. 선생님은 무서운 사람입니다. 배를 만드는 조선사업 하게 되면 대번에 자기들이 감춘 것을 적발해냅니다. 여기 폴 워너가 우리 조선소, 마린 마스터 조선소 책임자가 될 때 잘났다고 자랑하고 다녀서 전부다 감춰 놓은 것을 들춰내 가지고 공격해 버렸습니다. 제일 무서워하는 선생님입니다. 배 디자인을 내가 지시합니다. 신문사의 모든 레이아웃 같은 것도 내가 지시해서 미국의 신문 올림픽 대회에서 1등 한 것입니다. 그렇게 빠르다는 것입니다. 그 전처럼 생각하지 말라는 것입니다. 그런 뭐가 있기 때문에 사탄세계의 어떤 정부가 갖지 못한 기반을 다 닦은 것입니다. I am a fearsomeperson. When it comes to building ships, I can easily expose anything that they have tried to cover up. 선생님은 25년 동안 매일 배를 탔습니다. 해양산업을 내 손으로 키워 나가야 되기 때문입니다. 그래서 오늘도 옥포 조선소를 다녀왔습니다. 이 조선소를 내가 사든가 북한에 들어가서 만주와 소련의 삼각지대에 이 이상의 것을 만들어야 되겠다는 생각을 하면서 시찰을 한 것입니다. 그런 것은 나 혼자 생각하는 것입니다. 그래야 북한 사람이 사는 것입니다. (290-210, 1998.2.24)

For twenty-five years Iwent aboard a boat everyday because Imust foster the marine industry with my own hands. Even today, I came back from the Okpo shipyard. I went there to inspect that shipyard, thinking I should either buy it, or enter North Korea and build a bigger shipyard in the delta area of Manchuria and the Soviet Union. 본래 여기서 내가 일본과 중국을 상대하려고 했습니다. 중국 배가 여기 오지 않았어요? 중국 배 때문에 조선소에 수리공장도 만든 것입니다. 수리해 줘라 이겁니다. 배들이 고장났으면 원가로 해주라는 겁니다. 일본 사람에게도 지귀도에 낚시터 만든 것을 안내해 줘라 이겁니다. 그렇게 하면 다 고관들이 날아옵니다. 그래서 모슬포에 비행장도 닦은 것입니다. 중국 비행기와 일본 비행기가 자유 왕래하라는 것입니다. 다른 나라는 그만두고 중국비행기, 소련 비행기, 일본 비행기 전용비행장이다 이겁니다. (291-303, 1998.3.18)

Originally, I was going to deal with Japan and China from here. Didn’t the boats from Chinacome here? I made a repair factory in our shipyard to helpthose boats from China. I told them to repair them. I told them to repair damaged boats at the prime cost. I told them to guide the Japanese people to the fishing spot I made on Jigwido. If I do that, then all the high government officials will come flying to this place. That is why I also made an airfield in Moseulpo, so that planes from China and Japan could freely come and go. It is off-limits for other nations and is a private airfield for planes from China, the Soviet Union, and Japan. (291-303, 1998.3.18)

Who is "them"? Our workers? Our company’s officials? Government officials?

"If I do that…" or should it be "If they do that…"?

제주도에 대해서 선생님은 10년 전부터 관심을 가졌습니다. 제주도는 군사요새 지역으로 앞으로 아시아에서 중요한 지역이 됩니다.

이런 것을 주욱 생각했기 때문에 제주도에 대해서 관심이 많았습니다. 개발문제, 물론 관광 개발도 개발이지만 앞으로 나라의 운명에 있어서 바다와 접하고 있는 이 제주도가 중요합니다. (126-157, 1983.4.19)

I have had interest in Jejudo for ten years. Jejudo is a military stronghold and will become an important place in Asia in the future.

제주도는 옛날 장개석이 군항으로 빌려 주면 아시아를 자기가 점령하겠다고 하던 그런 중요한 곳입니다. 군사기지로서 한국에 있어서 중요한 곳이다 이겁니다. 그런 저런 것을 전부감안해 볼 때, 제주도는 앞으로 홍콩과 같이 국제 자유도시로서의 기능을 할 수 있게 됩니다. 금리가 자유체제가 되는 날에는 스파이들이 활동할 수 있는 기지로서 제일 적격지입니다. 그런 면에서 군사적으로도 중요한 요새인 것입니다. 그런 것을 쭉 생각하게 될 때, 제주도에서는 사업하기가 힘들다는 것입니다. 그래서 할 수 없이 사업기반을 닦아 가지고 무엇부터 시작할 것이냐 할 때, 그것이 낚시터입니다. Jejudo is an important place where Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 – April 5, 1975) a Chinesemilitary and political leader who assumed the leadership of the Kuomintang (KMT) after the death of Sun Yat-sen in 1925. had said in the past that he could dominate Asia, if he was given a naval base on this island. As an army base, it is an important location in Korea. When you think about these things, Jejudo will function as an international free city like Hong Kong. When the interest rates fall under a free system, it would become the best place for spies to use as a base for their activities. In that sense, Jejudo is also an important stronghold for the military. When you contemplate thesethings, it is difficult to do business in Jejudo. That is why you have to build a foundation for business,and you should start with fishing spots. (126-311, 1983.4.30)

제주도는 어차피 우리나라에 있어서 해양관문으로서 중요한 아시아의 길목이 되고있습니다. 동지나해나 일본해를 거쳐 태평양까지 연결할 수 있는 위치에 있기 때문에 군사요새로서 제일 중요한 곳입니다. 그리고 모슬포 옆의 항구는 세계적으로 유명한 군사항구가 될 수 있는 수심(水深)입니다. (126-311, 1983.4.30)

Jejudo is naturally becoming an important center in Asia as an ocean gateway for our country. The island is in a position that is connected to the Pacific Ocean through the East China Sea and East Sea. Therefore, it is the most important as a military stronghold. The port next to Moseulpo has the right depth of water to become a significant military port worldwide.(126-311, 1983.4.30)

Don’t Koreans prefer "East Sea"?

선생님이 세계를 안 가 본 데 없이 돌아다녔지만 한국처럼 좋은 곳이 없습니다. 기후로 보나 산수의 아름다운 것으로 볼 때, 한국은 참 세계에 없는 나라입니다. 내가 언젠가 불란서 한 시골에 가 가지고 한국 같은풍경을 느껴 봤는데, 그 외는 아주 다릅니다. 여기는 산들을 보더라도 노년기 산들이기 때문에, 전부 꽃봉오리 같고 다 예쁩니다. 다른 데 가 보면, 일본도 다 보면청년기 산이기 때문에 다 울룩불툭하고 흉합니다. 산세로 봐도 한국이 아름다운 나라라는 것입니다. 또, 삼면이 바다로 둘러싸인 반도이기에 자연적 혜택을 받은, 경치에 있어서는 더욱이나 혜택을 받은 나라입니다. I have visitedevery part of the world, but there is no place better than Korea. In terms of climate and the beauty of its mountains and lakes, Koreais truly a nation that is not of this world. I once went the countryside in France and saw a landscape that was similar to that of Korea. But aside from that, it was very different. The mountains here are in their declining years. They all look pretty like flower buds. When you go to other places, for example Japan, the mountains there are in their adolescence and therefore are bumpy and look ugly. Even by observing the physical aspects of the mountains, you can see that Korea is a beautiful country. It is also a peninsula surrounded by the ocean on three sides. It is also blessed with nature, and even more so in terms of its landscape. (169-136, 1987.10.29)

제주도의 ‘제’ 자는 ‘건널 제(濟)’자입니다. 건너가서 주인 노릇을 하는 곳이라는 뜻입니다. 또, 제주도 하게 되면 제사장 나라입니다. 지귀도(地歸島)라는 섬이 재미있습니다. 바다를 중심삼고 몇 백 미터 기둥을 박아서 낚시터를 만들 수 있다는 것입니다. 그리고 대륙을 유리 파이프 같은 것으로 연결해 가지고 자동차로 왔다갔다 할 수 있도록 만들수 있습니다. 그런 것을 만들어 떠내려가지 않게 묻어 놓고 차도 왔다 갔다할 수 있게 만드는 것입니다. 그런 시대가 왔습니다. 여기 제주도에서 해야 할 것은 다른 것이 없습니다. 낚시, 그 다음엔 골프, 사냥, 그 다음엔 카지노입니다. 그 다음엔 판매시장을 형성해야 합니다. 좋은 물건을 파는 판매시장이 있어야 합니다. 그 다음엔 재미있는 일이 있어야 합니다. 산에 헬리콥터를 타고 올라가는 것보다 엘리베이터나 케이블카로 올라가고, 바다에서는 쾌속정으로 제주도를 순회하는 것이 재미있는 일입니다. 일본도 한 시간이면 왔다갔다하는 것입니다. The Chinese character "je" (濟) in Jejudo means "to cross." It means thatit is a place to cross over and become the owner. Jejudo is also a nation of priests. The island called Jigwido is interesting. It is something like driving a pillar, several hundred meters long, down into the sea to make a fishing spot. You could also connect Jigwido to the continent with a glass pipe to allow automobiles to travel back and forth. You could build it under the seabed, so that it doesn’t sink while the many cars are going back and forth. That kind of age has come. There is nothing else we should do here in Jejudo. We should do fishing, then golf and hunting, and enjoy the casino. Then we should create a sales market. There needs to be a salesmarket to sell our goods. Then there should be something interesting. It would be fun to have people go up the mountain on an elevator or cable car, rather than a helicopter, and tour the seas surrounding Jejudo in a speedboat. You can go back and forth between Japan in an hour. (291-246, 1988.3.15)

제주도도 보니까, 낚시에 관계돼 있는 사람이 3천3백 명이라고 하는데, 상점만 해도 상당히 많습니다. 전국적으로는 몇 만이 되는 것입니다. 그 사람들이 다 중류 이상입니다. 취미산업에 치중할 수 있는 사람은 중류 이상의 사람이라는 것입니다. 취미산업 관련 스포츠 상점, 거기에는 총기도 다 들어갑니다. 낚시에 쓰이는 플라이(ply: 밧줄의 가닥) 같은 것은 소모품입니다. 얼마나 공장이 많이 필요한지 모릅니다. 이게 대단한 산업이 되는 것입니다. 플라이 같은것은 1년밖에 못 씁니다. 그러니 그 공장을 만들어 인건비가 싼 많은 아프리카 사람들을 채용해서 밥먹을 수 있게 만드는 것입니다. 선생님이 제주도에 오면서 그런 면을 생각했기 때문에 9일, 10일에 낚시대회, 사냥대회를 하려고 하는 것입니다. 그것은 세계평화를 위해서 하는 것입니다. In Jejudo, since 3,300 people have something to do with fishing, there are a considerable number of shops. There are tens of thousands of shops throughout the nation, most of which are above the middle class. The shops that canfocus on the hobby industry are those who are above the middle class. Firearms are also included in the sports shops, affiliated with the hobby industry. Ply that is used in fishing is expendable. You don’t know how many factories are needed. This will become a tremendous industry. Ply lasts for only about a year. That is why they should make a factory for that and hire many Africans at cheap labor to feed them. I think about these things when I come to Jejudo. That is why I am thinking of holding a fishing tournament and hunting tournament on the 9th and 10th.
