Date :2013.03.01 Prepared by :Ms Phi HuyenTrang(trangphi88@gmail.com) I. OverviewWith diverse climate characteristics, Vietnam has variety of vegetables and fruits. However, vegetables are easy to be damaged after harvest while most of the large-scale production does not have processing place and temporary storage. Drying fresh fruits and vegetable is very good way to reserve and store those products for a longer term. Thanks to development of technology and drying principals, dried vegetables/fruits still keep their good tastes. Those goods attract numbers of Vietnamese customers and foreign consumers due to their easy transportation, convenience of using and good quality.
According to Vietnam fruit and Vegetable Association Vietnam (Vinafruit), Vietnam’s export volume of dried fruits and vegetables has a strong growth in markets such as China, Korea, Japan, US and EU is very interested in dried fruits from Vietnam. Some Vietnamese dried fruit products of Vinamit, Deltafood have presence in Chinese supermarket and many European countries. At the end of August, 2011, Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exports reached $US 405 million, in which groups of dried fruits such as pineapple, sliced bananas and pumpkin contribute significantly to exports value. Mr. Nguyen Van Ky, Secretary of Vinafruit forecasted that export value of vegetables and fruits will reach $US 500-$US 510 million each year and 1.2 billion USD in 2020.Products such as dried fruit, canned fruit, dried sweet potatoes and canned cucumber are the main export goods of Vietnam in this category.
In dried agricultural products industry, dried fruits products take the largest market share and have a leading role in greatly contributing export value of Vietnam. In contrast, dried vegetables are not main exported goods. The fact shows that domestic production does not centralized and Vietnamese consumers prefer fresh vegetables in daily life. Besides, both quantity and quality cannot serve the demand of domestic customers so that Vietnamese import volume of HS code 071290 is higher than export volume and has increasing trend. It is because Vietnamese consumers have higher rate of usage and vegetable processing zones in Vietnam do not develop and they are mostly small scale, owned by individuals or family-owned factories.
As the matter of fact, material supply of various vegetable is not enough and unavailable because vegetable growing areas in Vietnam are not gathered and distributed widely in many places. Although source of agricultural materials cannot meet the needs of processing factories, this sector is still potential to strongly grow and develop in the future. As easily can be seen in the chart, from 2007 – 2010, the import value fluctuated in 5 year time but total value was higher than export volume. Import value stayed flat in 2006-2007 and increased sharply in 2008, then got a dip in 2009. This is because worldwide economy recession affected many industries and agricultural products trade was not exception. However, in recovery period, the higher demand for imported agricultural goods leads to the increasing trend of imported volume in this category. Meanwhile export value kept stable rate but lower than 2006. This indicators show that the domestic firms do not serve enough the demand of Vietnamese customers or with the development of the economy, Vietnamese customers tend to consume foreign products that they believe those have better technology and quality.
Chart 2.1 Import and Export value of HS code 071290 (Unit: thousand USD) (Source: www.trademap.org)
In general, Vietnam import dried vegetable more than export. The below table indicates import-export volume of products with HS code 071290 by countries.
Table 2.2 Imported value of HS code 071290 by suppliers
(Source: www.trademap.org)
The above table shows that China was the most significant supplier of Vietnam in this category ($US 19.8 million) as variety of goods, reasonable prices and easy transportation. Due to economy recession in 2008-2009 periods, import value by all suppliers has the same trend in which import value decreased. China got the dip of $US 1 million that declined 10 times, compared to previous year. Followed by Japan, Thailand and Canada are those of largest exported countries to Vietnam. Meanwhile, Vietnam imported low volume of dried vegetable from Korea with value of $US 6,000 and $US 3,000 in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
Table 2.3 Exported value of HS code 071290 by countries (Unit: thousand USD)
(Source: www.trademap.org)
Above table indicated Japan, Korea and Chinese Taipei are main importers of Vietnamese dried vegetable with constant amount from 2006-2010. However, in 2010, compared to other countries, Cambodia stayed the 1st place in importing the largest number of this products, up to $US 2.37 million.
II. Investigation of processing factory near Ha Noi Even the facts show dried agricultural products are potential industry in Vietnam market. However, Vietnam is lack of industrial zones that specifically used for producing those products. In 2011, according to Industrial Review of Vietnam, this industry had to face numbers of drawbacks such as low reservation technology, low quality and high prices. Recently, there is roughly 60 vegetables and fruits’ processing factories in Vietnam in which stated-owned companies took 50% numbers of factories, 16% limited company and 34% enterprises with 100% foreign capital. Besides, there are thousands of processing factories with very small scale. Processing factories with big scale are mostly dried fruits products companies due to their high demand of importing from other countries so they invest in machinery to serve domestic and overseas consumers.
Import and export value in 2ndpart of this report indicates that Import value of dried vegetables with HS code 071290 was higher than export value. This data shows the domestic production could not meet the demand of Vietnamese consumers and because Vietnamese processing factories mostly have small scale and lack of high technology as well as machinery. Recently, there is no clear data about consumption of these products. However, to approach individual customers, Dreamwise may contact supermarkets to present and selling dried vegetables. To access corporation, Dreamwise may contact Noodle factories to co-operate and sell goods.
