A 20-Year Bond Forged Through Martial Arts

My connection with Santos began in July 2007, at a Haedong Kumdo seminar in Brazil.

The friendship that began when we first met and trained together with swords has now continued into its 20th year.

Looking back, it has been a long journey.

What began simply as an encounter between two people has passed through countless training sessions and seminars, while many things have changed in both of our lives.

Yet one thing has remained unchanged through all those years.

A bond that began through martial arts has remained a bond between human beings.

I first met Santos in Brazil in 2007. In 2026, we met again in Korea, traveled together, laughed together, shared many conversations, and created another chapter of memories.

Today, all of our schedules finally came to an end.

Santos and Martino headed to the bus terminal, while I made my way to Cheonan-Asan Station.

As we traveled in different directions, we exchanged our final goodbyes by phone. We could not stand together and wave goodbye in the same place, which made it a rather unusual and memorable farewell.

On my way to Cheonan-Asan Station, I stopped for a warm bowl of the famous Sinchang Garak-guksu. Afterward, I had a cup of coffee at EDIYA, quietly looking back on the time we had shared before arriving at the station.

Now I am aboard the KTX bound for Busan.

Sometimes I wonder: if martial arts had not been part of my life, would I ever have met people living on the other side of the world in Brazil, trained with them, and maintained such a friendship for nearly twenty years?

Martial arts may begin with learning how to wield a sword, but ultimately, they can also become a path that connects one human being to another.

Now we return to our own places and our own lives.

But the time we shared does not disappear.

Every meeting eventually brings a farewell, and every farewell may someday lead to another meeting.

Perhaps a true bond does not mean always remaining in the same place together. Perhaps it means continuing along different paths while still keeping a place for one another in our hearts.

One day, we will all put down our swords.

But putting down the sword does not mean putting down the bonds that were formed through it.

And so, another journey comes to an end, and I return home to Busan.

Uma amizade de 20 anos construída através das artes marciais

Minha amizade com Santos começou em julho de 2007, durante um seminário de Haedong Kumdo no Brasil.

A relação que nasceu quando nos encontramos pela primeira vez e treinamos juntos com nossas espadas já chega ao seu 20º ano.

Olhando para trás, foi uma longa jornada.

Tudo começou simplesmente com o encontro entre duas pessoas. Desde então, aconteceram inúmeros treinamentos e seminários, e muitas coisas mudaram em nossas vidas.

Mas existe algo que não mudou com o passar dos anos.

Uma amizade que começou através das artes marciais permaneceu como uma verdadeira ligação entre seres humanos.

Conheci Santos no Brasil em 2007. Em 2026, nos encontramos novamente na Coreia, viajamos juntos, rimos, conversamos e criamos mais um capítulo de boas lembranças.

Hoje, finalmente concluímos toda a nossa programação.

Santos e Martino seguiram para o terminal rodoviário, enquanto eu segui em direção à estação Cheonan-Asan.

Enquanto seguíamos por caminhos diferentes, trocamos nossas últimas despedidas pelo telefone. Não pudemos ficar no mesmo lugar para nos despedirmos pessoalmente, e talvez por isso tenha sido uma despedida ainda mais especial e memorável.

No caminho para a estação Cheonan-Asan, parei para comer uma tigela quente do famoso Sinchang Garak-guksu. Depois, tomei um café no EDIYA e passei alguns momentos recordando tudo o que vivemos antes de chegar à estação.

Agora estou no KTX com destino a Busan.

Às vezes penso: se as artes marciais não tivessem feito parte da minha vida, será que eu teria conhecido pessoas que vivem do outro lado do mundo, no Brasil, treinado com elas e mantido uma amizade por quase vinte anos?

As artes marciais podem começar com o aprendizado da espada, mas, no final, também se tornam um caminho que conecta um ser humano a outro.

Agora cada um retorna ao seu lugar e à sua própria vida.

Mas o tempo que compartilhamos não desaparece.

Todo encontro traz algum dia uma despedida, e depois de uma despedida pode surgir um novo encontro.

Talvez uma verdadeira amizade não signifique permanecer sempre juntos no mesmo lugar. Talvez signifique seguir por caminhos diferentes, mas continuar guardando um lugar para o outro no coração.

Um dia, todos nós deixaremos nossas espadas de lado.

Mas deixar a espada não significa abandonar os laços que nasceram através dela.

Assim termina mais uma jornada, e eu retorno para casa, em Busan.

무술로 이어진 20년의 인연

산토스와의 인연은 2007년 7월, 브라질에서 열린 해동검도 세미나에서 시작되었다.

그때 처음 만나 함께 검을 들고 수련했던 인연이 어느덧 20년째 이어지고 있다.

돌이켜보면 참 긴 세월이다.

한 사람과 한 사람의 만남으로 시작되었지만, 그 사이 수많은 수련과 세미나가 있었고 서로의 삶에도 많은 변화가 있었다.

그러나 긴 세월이 흘러도 변하지 않은 것이 하나 있다.

무술로 시작된 인연이 사람과 사람의 인연으로 남아 있다는 것이다.

2007년 브라질에서 처음 만났던 산토스와 2026년 한국에서 다시 만나 함께 여행하고, 웃고, 이야기하며 또 하나의 추억을 만들었다.

그리고 오늘 모든 일정을 마쳤다.

산토스와 마르티노는 버스터미널로 향하고, 나는 천안아산역으로 향했다.

서로 다른 곳으로 가는 길에서 우리는 전화로 마지막 인사를 나누었다. 같은 장소에서 손을 흔들며 헤어진 것은 아니지만, 서로 멀어져 가는 길 위에서 나눈 조금 특별한 작별이었다.

천안아산역으로 가는 길에는 유명하다는 신창가락국수에 들러 따뜻한 국수 한 그릇을 먹었다. 이디야에서 커피 한잔을 마시며 잠시 지나온 시간을 돌아본 뒤 천안아산역에 도착했다.

이제 부산행 KTX에 몸을 싣는다.

생각해 보면 무술을 하지 않았다면 지구 반대편 브라질에서 살아가는 사람들과 만나 함께 검을 들고 수련하고, 20년 가까운 세월 동안 인연을 이어갈 수 있었을까.

무술은 검을 배우는 것에서 시작하지만, 결국은 사람과 사람을 이어주는 길이기도 하다.

우리는 다시 각자의 자리로 돌아간다.

그러나 함께했던 시간이 사라지는 것은 아니다.

만남이 있으면 헤어짐이 있고, 헤어짐 뒤에는 또 다른 만남이 있다.

어쩌면 인연이란 항상 같은 곳에 머무르는 것이 아니라, 서로 다른 길을 걸으면서도 마음속에 서로의 자리를 남겨두는 것인지도 모른다.

검은 언젠가 내려놓게 된다.
그러나 검을 통해 맺어진 인연까지 내려놓는 것은 아니다.

그렇게 또 하나의 여정을 마치고 부산으로 돌아간다.

2026년 8월 9일 일요일,
