디모데후서 4:9~22

떠난 자, 돌아온 자, 항상 곁을 지키는자

1. 떠나는 자

데마는 두번이나 바울의 동역자로 기록되어 있습니다(골 4:14, 몬 1:24). 전도여행의 중심축이며 이방인 교회의 기둥같은 사람이었습니다. 하지만 네로황제의 박해를 두려워하여 바울을 떠났습니다. 그레스게와 디도, 두기고는 사역지로 떠났고 누가만 바울의 곁을 지킵니다. 누가는 의사이며 몸이 늘 좋지 않았던 바울과 함께 1차 전도여행부터 그의 순교까지 함께 하였습니다.

2. 돌아온 자

마가는 한 때 바울의 1차 전도 여행 때에 함께 참여했다가 비시디아 안디옥으로 넘어가는 산악 지역에서 중도에 포기하고 집으로 돌아갑니다. 그때 바울은 말라리아 풍토병에까지 걸려 40도의 고열에 시달리며 큰 고통을 겪고 있었는데 마가가 돌아가자 정신적인 충격까지 받아서 이 일로 바나바와 크게 다투기까지 했다고 합니다.

그러나 후일 마가는 회개하고 사역자의 위치로 돌아옵니다. 베드로의 곁에서 그를 돕다가 베드로가 전해준 말을 중심으로 마가복음을 기록합니다. 그리고 베드로가 순교한 후에 바울에게로 와서 바울이 죽기 직전까지 바울 곁에서 바울을 위로하며 돕는 자가 됩니다. 바울은 그의 말년에 마가를 크게 의지합니다.

3. 상황에 따라 움직이는 자

17절에 사자의 입에서 건짐받았다는 말은 재판 1심에서 사형선고를 피해갔다는 것입니다. 그리고 가장 외롭고 힘든 이 시기에 모두 바울의 곁을 떠납니다.(16절) 그의 편을 들다가 자신들마저 목숨이 위태로운 상황이기 때문입니다. 마치 11제자가 예수님의 재판당시 모두 도망간 상황과 비슷합니다.

진정한 친구는 위기때 드러납니다. 어떤 대기업 중역을 지낸 분이 그런 이야기를 합니다. 잘나가던 시절에는 특별히 충성을 맹세하는 사람들이 있었는데 잎이 떨어지는 계절에는 모두 떠나가고 없더라는 것입니다. 오히려 같은 자리에 묵묵히 있던 사람들이 도와주고 힘이 되어주었다고 합니다. 충성은 말이 아니라 행동이며 이득을 위한 처세가 아니라 진심입니다.

4. 신실한 일군들

19절에 브리스가와 아굴라가 등장합니다. 브리스가는 브리스길라의 라틴어식 표기입니다. 브리스길라와 아굴라는 본도 출신으로 로마에 살았으나, 글라우디와 황제의 반유대주의 정책으로 쫓겨나 고린도에 머물다 바울을 만나 그리스도인이 되었습니다. 이후 바울의 동역자로 함께 활동하였고, 바울을 위해 목숨을 바칠 만큼 헌신적으로 바울을 도왔습니다.
 
- 에라스도 (20절) :
그의 이름은 롬16:23에 등장합니다. 재무관 에라스도(Erastus)라는 이름입니다. 에라스도는 시재무관이었습니다.

"이 성의 재무관 에라스도와 형제 구아도도 너희에게 문안하느니라"

또한 사도행전 29장에 보면 에라스도는 바울의 선교사역에 중심에 있으면서 디모데와 사역을 함께 했습니다.

이 일이 있은 후에 바울이 마게도냐와 아가야를 거쳐 예루살렘에 가기로 작정하여 이르되 내가 거기 갔다가 후에 로마도 보아야 하리라 하고 자기를 돕는 사람 중에서 디모데와 에라스도 두 사람을 마게도냐로 보내고 자기는 아시아에 얼마 동안 더 있으니라"(사도행전 19장21~22절)

- 오네시보로(19절) :
    바울의 마지막 투옥 때 감옥까지 찾아와 바울을 방문하고 격려하였다가
    바울보다 먼저 참수형으로 순교를 당한 자(1:16~18)입니다.
 
- 드로비모(20절) :
    에베소 교인들의 헌금을 바울과 함께 예루살렘까지 운반했던 자입니다.

바울의 곁을 지켰던 많은 사람들 중에 마지막까지 함께 걸어간 사람들이 보입니다. 눈이라도 빼어주었으리라 바울이 장담했던 브리스가 아굴라 부부와 곁을 떠나지 않고 도움이 되었던 누가와 잠시 떠났으나 돌아와 마지막을 장식한 마가와 힘들고 어려울 때 도움이 되었던 사람들 그리고 속히 내게로 오라고 청함을 받은 디모데까지 ..

우리는 사람의 곁을 지키는 자가 아닙니다. 성령님과 동행하며 예수님의 발자취를 따라 인생의 항해를 하며 산맥을 넘는 사람들입니다. 변치않는 믿음과 신실한 충성으로 주님곁을 지켜 하늘의 책에 기록되시는 성도님들 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

🕊️ Those Who Left, Returned, and Remained Faithful

1. 🚶‍♂️ Those Who Left

Demas is mentioned twice as a companion of Paul (Colossians 4:14; Philemon 1:24). He was a key figure in the missionary movement and a pillar of the Gentile church. Yet, when Nero’s persecution intensified, Demas abandoned Paul out of fear. Others like Crescens, Titus, and Tychicus left for ministry assignments, but only Luke remained.

Luke, a physician, stood by Paul from the first missionary journey to his martyrdom. Despite Paul’s frequent illnesses, Luke never left his side — a quiet but unwavering presence.

2. 🔄 Those Who Returned

Mark joined Paul’s first missionary journey but turned back when they reached the rugged terrain of Pisidian Antioch. At the time, Paul was suffering from malaria and enduring fevers over 40°C. Mark’s departure deeply wounded Paul, even causing a sharp dispute with Barnabas.

Yet Mark later repented and returned to ministry. He served alongside Peter and recorded the Gospel of Mark based on Peter’s teachings. After Peter’s martyrdom, Mark came to Paul and remained with him until the end. Paul, in his final days, leaned heavily on Mark’s support.

3. ⚖️ Those Who Moved with Circumstance

Paul writes that he was “rescued from the lion’s mouth” — likely referring to escaping a death sentence in his first trial (2 Timothy 4:17). But during this lonely and perilous time, many deserted him (v.16), fearing for their own lives. It echoes the moment when all eleven disciples fled during Jesus’ trial.

True loyalty is revealed in crisis. A former corporate executive once said, “In my successful years, many pledged loyalty. But when the season changed and the leaves fell, they all disappeared. It was those who quietly remained who gave me strength.” Loyalty is not words — it is action. Not strategy — but sincerity.

4. 🙌 Faithful Servants

Paul names several who remained faithful:

- Priscilla and Aquila (v.19): Originally from Pontus, they were expelled from Rome due to Claudius’s anti-Jewish edict. In Corinth, they met Paul and became devoted co-workers, even risking their lives for him.
- Erastus (v.20): Mentioned in Romans 16:23 as the city treasurer. He worked closely with Paul and Timothy in Macedonia (Acts 19:21–22).
- Onesiphorus (v.19): Visited Paul during his final imprisonment and encouraged him. He was later martyred before Paul (2 Timothy 1:16–18).
- Trophimus (v.20): Helped deliver offerings from the Ephesian church to Jerusalem.

Among those who stood by Paul, some remained until the very end. Priscilla and Aquila, who would have given their eyes for him; Luke, who never left; Mark, who returned and honored Paul in his final days; and others who supported him in hardship. Even Timothy, whom Paul urgently summoned — these were the ones who walked with him to the finish.

We are not merely companions to people — we are those who journey with the Holy Spirit, following in the footsteps of Jesus, crossing life’s mountains. May we be found faithful, unwavering, and recorded in heaven’s book as saints who remain by the Lord’s side.
