[Deceptions]
Fake dribbles and shots in sports.
Military deceptions are prevalent in wars.
- Feigned(Fake) retreat
Leading the enemy, through a false sense of security, into a pre-positioned ambush.
- Strategic envelopment
A small force distracts the enemy while a much larger force moves to attack from the rear. A favoured tactic of Napoleon.
Conquest of Ai
Joshua 8:3-7 So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night with these orders: "Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don't go very far from it. All of you be on the alert. I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them. They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, 'They are running away from us as they did before.' So when we flee from them, you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The LORD your God will give it into your hand.
- Fictional units
Exaggerating the size of an army.
이순신 장군 예화
Gaining admittance to a fortified area under false pretences
The Trojan Horse is a tale from the Trojan War about the trick that
the Greeks used to enter the city of Troy and win the war.
In the canonical version, after a fruitless 10-year siege, the Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse, and hid a select force of men inside. The Greeks pretended to sail away, and the Trojans pulled the horse into their city as a victory trophy. That night the Greek force crept out of the horse and opened the gates for the rest of the Greek army, which had sailed back under cover of night. The Greeks entered and destroyed the city of Troy, decisively ending the war.
[Don’t Be Deceived]
James 1:16 Don't be deceived, my dear brothers.
We are in spiritual warfare.
Our enemy is a deceiver. He plants lies in our minds.
2 Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ
John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies
2Corinthians 11:14 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
[The Lies]
1. Trials and tests are a curse
What matters is our attitude toward to trials and tests
Job 1:20-22 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing
James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
James 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
Psalm 119:71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
2. God is stingy and mean
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
Genesis 3:4-5 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
Does God withhold good gifts from us?
Luke 15:29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends
Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
3. Happiness consists in the amount of wealth
James 1:17-18 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created
James 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world
Ill) an old couple love to share with others
4. Listening is obeying
James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Attending the fellowship does not guarantee growth unless he obeys what he has learned.
Happiness consists in the amount of sharing with others.
5. Religion and faith are a matter of heart only
A matter of deeds as well
James 2:17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead
True religion
James 1:26-27 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
[Consequence of being deceived]
2Thessalonians 2:9-10 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
