Lotus blossom in the Avatamsaka integrity
Kim, Young-jai(Art philosopher|Ph.D.|Director, Daejeon Municipal Museum)
The "lotus" in Lim Lip's paintings represent the concept of purity and lotus-incarnation in the lotus pond. The pure lotus signifies that the lotus grown from the dirty mud in the pond, however, lotus flower reveals an image of innocence and purity like the Buddha and the dharma.
The lotus pond means the reincarnation site in the Sukhavati, i.e., pureland of Amitabha buddha. Furthermore, lotus-treasury is nothing but the pureland of Virocana in the avatamsaka sutra.
The lotus paintings well harmonize the life-long experience of the artist in the context of the buddhism, sumi-e effect, i.e, Indian ink drawing effect done by oil color, and various genres of art like Minhwa the Korean folk art along with Tanchung the five colored decoration seen in the Korean architecure.
Above all, the most significant leading idea of the painting is the Avatamsaka thought, of it's perfect integrity and harmony.
