♠ Saxophone : PEKKA PYLKKÄNEN

Pekka Pylkkänen, born in 1964, is a renowned saxophonist and composer who has established himself as one of the strongest jazz artists and saxophonists in Europe. His musical talent has taken him around the world, where he has had great success not only in Europe but also in Asia and the Americas. Collaborating with numerous prestigious artists in many countries, he continues to work as a soloist, recording artist, and educator, performing in clubs, concert halls, and major festivals across more than 70 countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa.

His appearances as a soloist and/or leader cover more than 2000 concerts, many of which on major festivals such as Hong Kong Jazz Festival, Beijing Jazz Festival, Trondheim Jazz Festival, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, National Arts Festival (South Africa), Providencia Festival de Jazz (Santiago, Chile), Yokohama Jazz Promenade, Yarasum Jazz Festival, Beijing Concert Hall, Pescara Jazz, Thailand Int. Jazz Conference etc. But as well he has performed at the groundbreaking Pori Jazz Festival and April Jazz Festival plus numerous others in his home country.

Recently Pekka had a very succesful tour in North-Africa where he performed in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. His busy schedule wil cover concerts and tours in 2024 only in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, Japan, France, Albania, Italy, China, Hong Kong and Mexico.

Early in his career, Pekka worked for several years with the National Jazz Orchestra of Finland - UMO Jazz Orchestra, where he performed modern contemporary music and often featured as a soloist.

Aside from his performing and composing career, Pekka has also made significant contributions as an educator, holding several full-time positions in Finland and conducting clinics and master classes in over 80 music universities, conservatories, and colleges worldwide. He has also been invited as an Artist-In-Residence in dozens of occasions in Finland, Italy, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, Portugal, Sweden and The Netherlands and has led numerous Summer Jazz Seminars in Italy as the artistic head.

Pekka has released several albums, including "Pekka Pylkkanen: Pekka’s Tube Factory" (1999), "Pekka Pylkkanen Tube Factory: Opaque" (2001), "Pekka Pylkkanen Tube Factory: Listen!" (Lumino Records and Starsing Records for the Chinese market), "Pylkkanen: Nu Bottega" (2020) with an Italian all-star line-up by Challenge Records International, and the latest album "Pekka Pylkkanen & Eric Ineke" (June 2022) also by Challenge Records.

In addition to his impressive career, Pekka Pylkkänen has also received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of jazz. He was awarded the IAJE Award in New York in 2007 and the Moods Jazz Award in Switzerland in 2013, recognizing his outstanding achievements as a saxophonist and composer.

Pekka has also been recognized for his work as an ambassador of music and culture, receiving honors from the Municipality of Buenos Aires in 2009, the Mayor of La Paz, Bolivia in 2005, and the Finnish-Peruan Association in 2003. These awards reflect his dedication to promoting jazz and his ability to connect with audiences around the world through his music.

Paul Kirby (born 1981) is a pianist, composer and arranger, originally from Edinburgh, UK. He has performed with some of the top names in jazz including Herb Geller, Jesse Davis, Steve Grossman, Jim Snidero, Billy Hart, Tim Armacost, Peter King, Vincent Herring, Eric Alexander, vocalist Kenny Washington and Ken Peplowski amongst many others. He has performed on TV and Radio many times in Europe (BBC/UK, BR/Germany, etc) and South Korea (KBS, EBS, etc).

His debut album “If Not Now” was released on Nagel Heyer records in 2015 with drummer Mark Taylor and bassist Martin Zenker and he is also part of the acclaimed “Resonance Trio” with bassist Sean Pentland and drummer Manuel Weyand.

While living in New York, he studied with jazz pianists Stanley
Cowell, Jason Moran, Kenny Werner and George Colligan and played venues such as “The Blue Note” and “Iridium”. As well as playing jazz, Paul has also toured classical music venues across the UK with leading guitarist Simon Thacker in the group “Camerta Ritmata”.

1999-2003 – MA (Masters) in Mathematics from Clare College, The University of Cambridge, U.K.

2008-2010 – MM (Masters) in Jazz Piano Performance from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, U.S.A.
