Choryang Ibagu-gil — A Walk Through the Hills of Old Busan
August 10, 2026 · Monday
Today, Timo and I explored Choryang Ibagu-gil, one of Busan’s unique hillside neighborhoods.
The word Ibagu comes from the Gyeongsang dialect and means story. So Ibagu-gil literally means Story Road — a path filled with the stories and memories of the people who have lived on these steep hills overlooking Busan.
And when they say steep, they really mean it. 😂
One of the highlights is the famous 168 Stairs. Just looking up from the bottom is enough to make your legs tired!
Fortunately, there is a very steep inclined elevator/monorail-style lift running alongside the stairs. Riding it feels a little thrilling because it climbs almost straight up the hillside. 😅
But once we reached the top, we immediately understood why people come here.
The reward was a wonderful panoramic view — Busan Port, the surrounding mountains, and the city spreading out below us.
Busan is a city built between the sea and the mountains, so sometimes the best way to discover it is simply to keep climbing.
168 steps, one very steep ride, and a great view at the top! 😂
Timo seemed to enjoy another little adventure in Busan. 👍
