호레이스 4, 왜 시를 쓰나?

시인이 시를 쓰는 목적은 이득을 얻거나 즐겁게 하거나 혹은 자신의 시들로 동시에   즐거움도 주고 삶의 교훈도 주기 위한 것이다. 누군가를 가르치고 싶을 때, 간결하게 하라. 사람들은 당신이 하는 말을 재빨리 흡수해  교훈을 배우고, 충실하게  간직할 것이다.

필요하지 않은 모든 말은  가득 찬 마음 밖으로 흘러내릴 것이다.  즐거움을 주려고 의도한 허구들은 가급적이면 실제와 가깝게 해야한다. 

The aim of the poet is either to benefit, or to amuse,

or to make his words at once please and give lessions of life. 

When you wish to instruct, be brief; That men's minds

may take in quickly what you say, learn its lesson,

and retain it faithfully. Every word that is unneccesary only

pours over the side of the brimming mind.

Fictions intended to please must keep as near as may be to real life.
