SEOUL, May 3 (Yonhap) -- Presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung has been placed under heightened security following reports of plots to attack him, his campaign said Saturday.

Lee of the liberal Democratic Party is "going to have difficulty having direct contact with people from now on due to continued reports of plots to attack the candidate," the campaign said via YouTube and Facebook.
During a campaign stop in the eastern coastal city of Sokcho the same day, Lee asked the locals for their understanding, saying he will not be able to hold their hands due to security concerns.

The conservative People Power Party, however, dismissed the decision as a "sham" aimed at delaying his retrial on election law violation allegations.
​
"The court marshal will not harm candidate Lee, so he can relax and meet him to accept the notification of his hearing," the party said in a commentary, adding that as a candidate of a major party, Lee is already provided the same level of security as a prime minister.

"We hope he rests easy and attends his trial," the party said.
​
On Friday, the Seoul High Court scheduled the first hearing of the retrial for May 15 and sent notification of his duty to attend both via mail and a court marshal.
​
The retrial was ordered by the Supreme Court earlier this week, reviving the possibility that Lee could receive a sentence barring him from running in the June 3 presidential election.

[이데일리 김유성 기자] 속초와 양양 등 동해안 지역을 방문 중인 이재명 더불어민주당 대선 후보는 최근 신변 위협으로 경호가 강화되면서 지역 주민들과 제대로 인사를 나누지 못하고 있다며 안타까운 마음을 전했다.

이 후보는 3일 자신의 사회관계망서비스(SNS)를 통해 “늘 죄송하고, 늘 감사하다”며 “한 분 한 분의 손을 잡고 따뜻한 위로와 진심 어린 응원을 건네고 싶었다”고 밝혔다.

그는 “이제는 눈인사만으로 마음을 나눠야 한다고 한다. 어쩌다 세상이 이렇게 됐는지 안타깝다”며 “너른 양해 부탁드린다”고 덧붙였다.

그러면서 “비록 손을 잡는 것조차 어려운 상황이지만, 우리는 하나”라며 “하나 되어 반드시 승리하자”고 강조했다. 이어 “마음껏 두 손을 맞잡고 부둥켜안을 수 있는, 모두가 안전하고 행복한, 존중과 사랑이 넘치는 세상을 함께 만들어가자”고 했다.

더불어민주당 선대위 측은 “이 후보에 대한 습격을 모의하고 있다는 제보가 잇따르고 있어, 경호를 강화하고 대민 접촉을 자제하고 있다”고 설명했다.

이날 이 후보도 강원도 속초 중앙시장을 찾은 자리에서 “경호 문제로 인해 오늘부터는 손을 잡지 못하게 됐다”며 “양해 부탁드린다”고 말했다. 그는 “오늘도 무슨 일이 있을 수 있다고 해서 저희가 조심하고 있다”며 지지자들에게 거듭 양해를 구했다.

한편 이 후보는 강원도 ‘동해안 벨트’ 방문에 맞춰 어업 활성화 공약을 발표했다.

이 후보는 어민 소득 증대와 정주 여건 개선을 추진하겠다며 △해양 바이오 산업과 레저 관광 산업 육성 △권역별 복합해양 관광도시 확대 △마리나 거점 및 레저 선박 클러스터 조성 등을 제시했다.
