위험을 감수하는 믿음

도박은 경우의 수와 통계, 그리고 알 수없는 운에 의지합니다. 내일 일이 잘될런지 어떨지는 아무도 알지 못합니다. 심지어 5분후의 일도 우리는 예측하지 못합니다. 만일 5분후의 미래를 예측한다면 세상은 교통사고 없는 천국이 될 것입니다.

믿음은 통계나 우연을 뛰어넘는 확고한 기초위에 서 있습니다. 라합은 여리고의 미래를 믿음으로 바라보았습니다. 그리고 그녀의 혜안은 자신과 가족들을 죽음에서 구원합니다.

누구나 이런 지혜를 가진 것은 아닙니다. 롯의 사위들은 소돔과 고모라의 멸망을 듣고도 농담으로 여깁니다. 롯의 아내는 불바다가 된 도시에 미련을 놓지 못합니다. 그러나 라합은 히브리민족의 거침없는 진군과 그 결과를 예측합니다. 대제국인 애굽을 따돌리고 홍해와 요단을 마르게 하고 시혼과 옥을 전멸시킨 소문이 파다했습니다. 여리고성 역시 파죽지세로 올라오는 히브리인들의 전리품이 될 것을 예견합니다.

그래서 그녀는 죽음에서 생명으로 나아갈 방법을 찾습니다. 그러던 중에 좋은 기회가 왔습니다. 그녀는 정탐군들을 보호하고 그 댓가로 목숨을 건져내라고 요구합니다.(12~13절) 그래서 정탐군들의 생명의 맹세를 담보로 약속을 받아냅니다.

라합은 비록 천한 신분이었으나 미래를 예견하는 지혜로 공권력을 상대로 대담한 행동을 합니다. 물론 이웃과 민족에 대한 신의와 시민으로서 지켜야 할 공공질서와 안녕을 위한 약속들이 있습니다. 그러나 생명의 가치 앞에 모든 것은 빛을 잃습니다.

어떤 영상을 보았는데 안전요원 한 사람이 트램에 치일뻔한 여자의 팔을 잡아 당겨 구했습니다. 그러나 그 여자는 여성에 대한 신체적 폭력과 동의를 구하지 않은 행동에 대해 법정에 고소를 했습니다. 판사는 생명을 구한 안전요원에 대한 감사는 커녕 고소를 진행했다고 분노합니다. 심지어 대중들은 여성의 편을 지지하는 사람들도 다수 있었다고 합니다.

그러나 생명은 모든 가치에 우선합니다. 약간의 불편과 수치와 손해를 감수하고서라도 생명은 구할 만한 가치가 있습니다. 누군가 물에 빠져 죽어가는데 옷이 젖을 까봐 구조를 망설인다면 그 사람은누군가의 생명보다 자신의 패션이 중요한 사람입니다. 교회의 인테리어와 조명과 음향, 제공되는 식사의 질과 기존 교인들의 친절함에 이끌려 교회를 선택할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 예배를 통해 생명주신 예수님을 만나지 못한다면 몇 만원의 지출 여부를 고민하느라 백화점의 99% 세일을 놓치는 사람과도 같을 것입니다. 이처럼 선택적 가치 전환이 난무한 시대에도 여전히 생명은 최우선의 가치를 가집니다.

오늘 미래를 예견하고 자신과 가족을 위해 대담한 행동과 약속으로 구원과 생명의 반열에 든 한 여인을 보았습니다. 우리는 삶에서 어떤 가치를 우선하고 어떤 선택을 해야 할까요? 생명되신 그리스도를 선택하고 십자가의 구원의 은혜에 감사하는 것이 은혜입은 자의 마땅한 모습이 아닐까 합니다.

Faith That Dares to Risk

Gambling depends on odds, statistics, and the unpredictable hand of chance. No one can say with certainty what tomorrow holds—not even what will happen five minutes from now. If we could foresee even five minutes into the future, the world would be a paradise without traffic accidents.

But faith is different. Faith stands on a foundation far more solid than probability or luck. Rahab, a woman of Jericho, looked into the future not with fear, but with faith. Her insight saved not only her own life but also the lives of her entire family.

Not everyone has such wisdom. Lot’s sons-in-law laughed off the warning of Sodom’s destruction. Lot’s wife couldn’t let go of her attachment to a city already doomed. But Rahab saw what others ignored: the unstoppable advance of the Hebrew people. Word had spread—how they had escaped Egypt, crossed the Red Sea and the Jordan, and defeated mighty kings like Sihon and Og. She knew Jericho would be next.

So she sought a way to move from death to life. And then came her opportunity. When the Israelite spies entered the city, she hid them and boldly asked for protection in return (Joshua 2:12–13). She secured a promise—an oath sealed with their lives.

Though Rahab’s social standing was low, her foresight and courage led her to defy authority and take a stand. Yes, there are civic duties and loyalties to one’s people. But when life itself is on the line, all other values fade into the background.

I once saw a video where a safety officer pulled a woman away from an oncoming tram, saving her life. Shockingly, she sued him for touching her without consent. The judge, outraged, noted that instead of gratitude, the officer faced legal action. Even more surprising, many in the public supported her.

But life must come first. Even if it means discomfort, embarrassment, or loss, saving a life is always worth it. If someone hesitates to rescue a drowning person for fear of getting their clothes wet, they’ve placed fashion above life.

Some people choose a church based on its lighting, sound system, food, or friendliness. But if they don’t encounter Jesus—the giver of life—through worship, they’re like someone who misses a 99% off sale because they’re worried about spending a few dollars. In a world of shifting values, life remains the highest priority.

Today, we saw a woman who foresaw the future, acted boldly, and secured salvation for herself and her family. What values guide our choices? Choosing Christ—the source of life—and giving thanks for the grace of the cross is the natural response of one who has truly received grace.
