유시민 전 노무현재단 이사장이 30일 김문수 국민의힘 대선 후보의 배우자 설난영씨를 겨냥한 비하성 발언 논란에 대해 “설씨가 왜 그런 언행을 하는지 설명한 것”이라며 “계급주의나 무슨 여성·노동비하 그런 말을 하지 않았다”고 말했다.

Regarding the controversy over disparaging remarks targeting Seol Nan-young, the spouse of Kim Moon-soo's presidential candidate, Yoo Si-min, former chairman of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, said on the 30th, "I explained why Seol is making such remarks," adding, "I didn't say such things as classism or any women or labor criticism."

유시민 전 이사장은 이날 ‘사람사는세상 노무현재단’ 유튜브 채널 라이브 방송에 출연해 “대선과 관계가 있는 거니까 말이 나온 김에 정리하고 갈까”라며 이같이 말했다.

유시민 전 이사장은 해당 표현에 대해 “합목적적이고 이성적인 판단을 하지 못하고 있다는 뜻”이라며 “합목적적이라 하면 남편에게 표를 붙여주는 활동을 해야 하고, 이성적이라 함은 선거에 승률을 높이는 활동을 하는 것”이라고 주장했다.

유시민 전 이사장은 여성·노동 비하 취지의 발언이 아니라며 “제가 그렇게 생각한다는 게 아니고 설씨가 그렇게 생각하기 때문에 저렇게 말하고 행동하는 것일 거라고 나는 이해하고 있다고 말을 한 것”이라고 말했다.

함께 출연한 최강욱 전 민주당 의원이 “유시민 작가 어법 중 특이하게 그 사람 입장이 돼서 생각해보면 이해하기 쉽다”고 하자 유 전 이사장은 “내재적 접근법”이라며 “윤석열 전 대통령에 대해서도 제가 늘 그렇게 얘기했다”고 말했다.

논란이 된 유시민 전 이사장 발언은 지난 28일 공개된 유튜브 채널 ‘김어준의 다스뵈이다’ 방송에서 나왔다. 유시민 전 이사장은 “설씨가 생각하기에는 김문수씨는 너무 훌륭한 사람이다. 나하고는 균형이 안 맞을 정도로 대단한 사람”이라며 “그런 남자와 혼인을 통해 내가 조금 더 고양됐다고 느낄 수 있다. 이런 조건에서는 자기 남편에 대해 비판적으로 보기 어렵다”고 말했다.

이를 두고 정치권과 시민단체들을 중심으로 “여성 일반에 대한 힐난이고 여성 혐오 발언이다. 노동자에 대한 멸시와 엘리트주의”(권영국 민주노동당 대선 후보), “기혼 여성의 지위와 주관은 남편에 의해 결정되는 부속품에 불과한가. 여성과 노동자에 대한 멸시와 학력에 대한 비하”(한국여성의전화) 등 비판이 제기됐다.
