Inside the Spitfire opened in August 2005 to mark the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The exhibition offers a spectacular view of the most famous British fighter plane of the Second World War.
Inside the Spitfire charts the rise of the Spitfire from a design masterpiece to its role as a powerful symbol of hope and resilience, sacrifice and triumph.
A Spitfire, loaned by the RAF Museum, has been installed on the Science Museum's second floor. The plane has been completely stripped down to its original structure and offers visitors a once in a lifetime view of creator R J Mitchell's spectacular design and engineering skills.
The exhibition also includes a collection of personal stories from the people who built, maintained, and flew the aircraft. Letters, mementos, papers, security passes, medals, models and rare photographs from the Castle Bromwich Spitfire factory are on show, as well as transcriptions of personal accounts
