Ready, Set, Go

Turn right, Turn left 방향을 지시하는 동사 turn. 아주 쉬운 것 같지만 문장마다 숙어로 사용되면서 의미가 많이 변형되는 경우를 겪게 됩니다.

그래도 기본 뜻 하나로 손쉽게 turn이라는 동사를 이해할 수 있습니다. “변화” 물론 그 해석대로 문장을 이해하기는 쉽지 않겠지만 방향의 전환을 상상하면 모든 turn의 동사 활용을 정확히 해석하실 수 있습니다.

본뜻

돌리다 – (방향의 변화)

The Ferris wheel turns three times and than you get off.

Turn the doorknob and walk outside.

방향을 바꾸다 – (진행의 변화)

The ship turned north.

Let’s turn back.  I’m tired.

Turn around.

다음 페이지로 가다 – (들춰보다 / 페이지의 변화)

Turn to page 31 in your books.

I can’t wait to turn to the next page and find the answer.

되다 / 변하다 – (순서의 변화)

The plants are turning green.

He turned professional right after high school.

나이를 먹다 – (나이의 변화)

I turn 32 this month.

I must get home before it turns midnight.

숙어

거부하다 / 거절하다 – to turn down – 제안의 의도를 변화

I hate to turn down your invitation, but I am busy that day.

The company offered me a new job, but I turned it down.

켜다, 끄다 – to turn on, turn off – 전기적 상태를 변화

He turned on the light.

Turn off the television and start your homework!

제출하다 – to turn in – 과제물 방향의 변화

Don’t forget to turn in your homework.

He turned in his homework late.

I turned in an application to that company.

관용어

역전하다 – the tide has turned / to turn the tide

The Dodger’s were winning, but now the tide has turned and it looks like the Diamondbacks will take the game.

Judy was beating me in the beginning of the tennis match, but I was able to turn the tide and finally win the game.

Take a Look

A: I can’t believe I turn 30 this month.  I’m getting old.

B: Don’t be ridiculous.  You just got offered a great new job.  You’re getting wealthier.  The tide is turning for you.  Life will just get easier and easier from here on out.

A: Maybe, but I turned down that new job.  I’ve decided to turn democrat and work for the Democratic National Committee.

B: Really?  When did you turn your resume in there?

Work it out

1.       불을 꺼주세요. (turn off) – Turn off the light, please.

2.       나는 숙제를 제출하지 않았다. (turn in) – I didn’t turn in my homework.

3.       내 아들이 내일 12살이 된다. (turn) – My son turns 12 tomorrow.

4.       나뭇잎들이 초록색으로 변하고 있다. (leaves, turn) – The leaves are turning green.

5.       12페이지를 펴주세요. (turn, page) – Turn to page 12, please.

Wrap it up

“변화” 라는 뜻으로 turn이라는 동사를 이해하세요. 뜻밖의 숙어가 나온다고 하더라도 기본 뜻만 알고 있다면 이해가 쉬울 것입니다.
