Eyes are a symbol of understanding. It is often said that eyes are the windows of the soul (therefore, the eyes reveal what lies in the heart.)


Open eyes are symbolic of consciousness, truth, perception, and knowledge. When Neo is freed from the matrix, his eyes are not just physically opened. Neo is then able, for the first time, to see the real world (perception) as well as come to understand what the matrix really is (knowledge).


In one of "The Matrix" trailers, a song titled "The Eyes Of Truth" by Engima plays in the background. A piece of this song also plays when the Matrix DVD is inserted.


In The Bible, Ephesians 1:18 states, "The eyes of your understanding being enlightened..."


Closed eyes are representive of sleep, unbelief, ignorance, and innocence. In Cypher's case, it is also symbolic of denial (a desire to not face the truth/reality.) Like he says, "ignorance is bliss" to him and that when he is reinserted into the matrix (goes back to sleep) he wants to remember "nothing."


Expanding on that last statement further, closed eyes (wearing sunglasses over your eyes) in "The Matrix" also represents sleeping/being in the matrix. Note that when the Neb Crew plugs into the matrix their "real" eyes are closed and in the matrix they are wearing sunglasses (covers over their eyes.)


Having Neo close and open his eyes at the agents (just after he caused one to explode) is very symbolic of seeing the truth (seeing the code) and awakening mentally, spiritually, and physically. It is an act of intimidation and power.


Note that those in the matrix who are good (Morpheus, Trinity, Neo, etc.) wear round, oval sunglasses while the evil ones (Cypher, the Agents) wear square, rectangular shaped sunglasses.


Mouse: "If you close your eyes, it almost feels like you're eating runny eggs." [Basically, Mouse is saying that in order to fool yourself or enter a state of denial, if you will, you have to close your eyes.]


Morpheus [to Neo]: "I can see it in your eyes. You have the look of a man who accept what he see because he is expecting to wake up."


Morpheus [to Neo]: "Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself."


Neo: "Why are my eyes sore?" Morpheus: "You've never used them before."


Morpheus [to Neo]: "[The Matrix] is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth."


Morpheus [to Neo]: "Were you listening to me, Neo, or were you looking at the woman in the red dress?"


Morpheus [to Neo]: "There are fields, endless field, where human beings are no longer born, we are grown. For the longest time I wouldn't believe it, and then I saw the fields with my own eyes."


Cypher [to Neo]: "I don't even see the code. All I see is blonde, brunette, red-head."


Neo [to the agents]: "...I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. A world without you."


Cypher [to Trinity]: "Look into his eyes, those big, pretty eyes and tell me yes or no."


Spoon Boy [to Neo]: Then you will see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself."



In addition to the unconscious/conscious symbolism, wearing sunglasses in the matrix is also representive of knowledge, power, strength, and a desire for control.



Have you ever heard of the saying, "knowlege is power?" Once you know the truth about something, only then do you have the ability to try and change it.


In the interrogation scene, Agent Smith takes off his glasses when he attempts to convince Neo to help them. However, when Neo gives him the finger and refuses his deal, Agent Smith puts his glasses back on. Agent Smith also removes his glasses when he interrogates Morpheus and confides in him that he hates the matrix.


As Neo's confidence improves and he fights Agent Smith in the subway, he breaks Smith's glasses.

Eyes/Sunglasses

눈은 인식의 상징이다. 흔히들 눈은 마음의 창이라고 한다. 마음 속에 있는 것은 눈을 통해 드러난다.

눈을 뜨는 것이 상징하는 것은 의식(consciousness), 진실(truth), 인지(perception), 지식(knowledge)이다.

네오가 매트릭스에서 벗어나고 처음엔 눈을 뜨지 못했는데 마침내 눈을 뜨게 되고 나서 현실 세계를 보게 되었고(perception), 매트릭스가 무엇인지도 이해하게 되었다(knowledge). 성서에서 유사한 표현이 나온 예는 에페소서 1장 18절이다. "여러분이 마음의 눈을 밝혀 주셔서..."

영화 예고편 가운데 하나는 'Engima'의 "The Eyes of Truth"를 배경음악으로 깔고 있다. 이 음악의 일부는 DVD를 처음 넣으면 들을 수 있다. (역자는 이 아티스트와 음악에 대해서 전혀 모른다. 예고편도 "Rock Is Dead"를 음악으로 쓴 것만 보았고, DVD-ROM으로만 보기 때문에 이 부분에 대해선 전혀 확인한 바가 없다.)

눈을 감은 것은 수면, 불신, 무지(無知)를 뜻한다. 사이퍼의 대사가 직설적으로 설명한다. "모르는 게 약이다 (ignorance is bliss)". 매트릭스에 다시 꽂혀서(잠들어서) 아무 것도 모르기를 원하는 그는 진실을 의도적으로 부정한다.

눈을 감는 것과 선글라스를 쓴 것은 그들이 매트릭스 안에 들어갈 때이다. 매트릭스가 꿈나라이니 꿈나라로 들어가기 위해선 당연히 눈을 감는 것이 당연한 것이다. 일단 매트릭스로 들어가면 모두들 선글라스를 즐겨 쓴다. 눈의 상태를 가지고도 매트릭스 안인지 현실인지 구분이 된다. 우리의 선한 주인공들이 쓰는 선글라스는 둥글고 타원형인데 반해 요원들과 사이퍼가 쓰는 선글라스는 사각형이다.

특히 네오가 스미스 요원 안에서 폭발하고 난 다음 눈을 감았다 다시 부릅뜨는 것은 네오가 매트릭스의 진실을 눈으로 보게 되고 정신적으로 영적으로 육체적으로 거듭난 것을 의미하는 것이다.

처음 네오가 네브로 왔을 때에 "눈은 왜 아프죠?"라고 묻자 모피어스가 "사용한 적이 없으니까"라고 대답한다. 네오는 아직 완전히 깨어나지 않은 것이다.

선글라스는 눈을 가림으로써 표정이 감춰지고 힘과 자신감있게 보이도록 해준다. 이런 이미지가 영화에서도 많이 쓰인다. 요원들이 네오를 심문하는 장면에서 스미스 요원은 선글라스를 쓰고 벗고 다시 쓴다. 처음엔 딱딱하게 대하다가 선글라스를 벗으면 (흥분하여) 솔직하게 대하고선 냉정을 되찾으면 선글라스를 다시 쓴다. 지하철 격투장면에서도 같은 양식을 발견할 수 있다.
