“This idea is that we’re Nordics. I am, and you are and you are and—” After an infinitesimal hesitation he included Daisy with a slight nod and she winked at me again. “―and we’ve produced all the things that go to make civilization―oh, science and art and all that. Do you see?”

After an infinitesimal hesitation : 데이지를 북유럽 인종에 포함시키는 데 어째서 이 아주 감깐 동안의 망설임이 있는가? 데이지의 친척인 닉은 곧바로 포함시켰는데 데이지를 포함시키는 데에 주저하는 데에는 무슨 이유가 있는 것일까?

There was something pathetic in his concentration as if his complacency, more acute than of old, was not enough to him any more. When, almost immediately, the telephone rang inside and the butler left the porch Daisy seized upon the momentary interruption and leaned toward me.

톰을 대학시절부터 알고 있던 닉은 톰이 한 가지에 집중하는 습성이 있다는 것을 알고 있다. 그전보다 더 심해진 톰의 집중하는 모습을 보면서 닉은 안쓰럽게 생각하고 있다. 닉은 톰이 허세를 부리고 있다는 것을 알고 있다.

“I’ll tell you a family secret,” she whispered enthusiastically. “It’s about the butler’s nose. Do you want to hear about the butler’s nose?”

“That’s why I came over tonight.”

“Well, he wasn’t always a butler; he used to be the silver polisher for some people in New York that had a silver service for two hundred people. He had to polish it from morning till night until finally it began to affect his nose—”

“Things went from bad to worse,” suggested Miss Baker.

“Yes. Things went from bad to worse until finally he had to give up his position.”

silver service : 실버 서비스(격식을 차린 만찬에서 은제 스푼, 포크 등으로 음식을 서빙하는 것)

nose : 집사가 현재와 같은 집사의 일이 아니라 은식기에 광을 내는 일을 할 때에는 코가 온전했다. 지금은 코가 온전하지 못한 상태에 있다. 데이지는 지금 톰이 정부에게서 온 전화를 받으러 간 줄 알고 있다. 톰에게 소식을 전하러 온 집사의 이야기를 하고 있는데, 집사의 이야기를 통해서 톰에 대해서 빈정거리고 있는 것으로 보인다. 톰도 집사처럼 코가 온전하게 되지 못할 것이라는 이야기를 하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 코가 남성의 성기의 상징이라면 톰의 성기가 집사의 코가 온전하지 못한 것과 같이 될 것이라는 의미를 담아서 말하고 있다.

Various schools of interpretation exist as to what the nose in Gogol's story represents. To pyschoanalysts, it is a phallic symbol, representative of the castration anxiety that Major Kovalev possesses to an absurd degree. For a moment the last sunshine fell with romantic affection upon her glowing face; her voice compelled me forward breathlessly as I listened―then the glow faded, each light deserting her with lingering regret like children leaving a pleasant street at dusk.

뒤에 이어지는 이야기를 보면, 지금 걸려온 전화는 톰의 정부에게서 온 것이고, 닉을 제외한 모든 이들이 알고 있는 사실이다. 데이지는 당황스러운 마음을 감추기 위해서 집의 집사 이야기를 하면서 얼굴이 상기되었다가 점차로 얼굴의 붉은 기운이 사라진다. 닉은 전화에 얽힌 일을 알지 못하는 가운데 데이지의 얼굴의 변화만을 보면서 묘사하고 있다. 데이지가 농담처럼 이야기를 했는데 놀이하는 아이들이 떠나는 것처럼 데이지의 얼굴에서 그러한 농담을 하던 기분이 사라지고 있음을 데이지의 얼굴 변화 묘사를 통해서 보여주고 있다.

- romantic affection upon her glowing face : 앞에 집사에 관한 이야기를 할 때에 it began to affect his nose(18:22-23)에서 affect는 병이 나게 한다는 뜻으로 사용되었는데 여기서 affect의 명사형인 affection은 ‘애착, 연민’의 의미로 사용되었다.

The butler came back and murmured something close to Tom’s ear whereupon Tom frowned, pushed back his chair and without a word went inside. As if his absence quickened something within her Daisy leaned forward again, her voice glowing and singing.

her voice glowing : 데이지의 얼굴이 glowing되었다고 했는데 여기서는 데이지의 목소리가 glowing 되었다고 말한다. 데이지의 목소리를 glowing하게 자극한 것은 톰의 부재이다. glowing한 목소리는 불타오르는 목소리이지만 singing하는 목소리이다. 데이지는 자기 목소리를 통해서 표출될 자기의 감정을 노래를 통해서 중화시키고 듣는 이로 하여금 데이지의 감정 상태에 대해서 제대로 판단하지 못하도록 하고 있다.

“I love to see you at my table, Nick. You remind me of a —— of a rose, an absolute rose. Doesn’t he?” She turned to Miss Baker for confirmation. “An absolute rose?”

absolute : 14:4,14에서 베이커 양이 사용한 단어 absolutely를 상기시킨다. 베이커 양이 잘 사용하는 단어를 사용해서 동의를 구하고 있다. 데이지가 an absolute rose 라고 말하고 베이커 양에게 확인을 구하는 것은 데이지가 베이커 양이 absolute라는 말을 습관적으로 많이 사용한다는 것을 알고 그 표현을 일부러 쓰고 베이커 양에게 확인을 구한 것으로 보인다.

rose : 데이지는 조금 전에 집사의 nose에 대한 얘기를 했는데 갑자기 닉을 보면 rose가 생각난다고 농담을 하고 있다. nose를 rose로 바꾸어서 말장난을 하고 있는 것으로 보인다.

‘absolute에는 ’완벽한‘이란 뜻도 있지만 이 대목에서는 구어체에서 ’완전‘, ’순‘의 말투를 띤 ’완전 장미‘라는 의미에 가까워 보인다. (신형욱, p.50)

This was untrue. I am not even faintly like a rose. She was only extemporizing but a stirring warmth flowed from her as if her heart was trying to come out to you concealed in one of those breathless, thrilling words. Then suddenly she threw her napkin on the table and excused herself and went into the house.

- suddenly : 톰이 정부의 전화를 받으려고 나간 상황에서 데이지는 어쩔 줄 모르는 마음을 숨기면서 겉으로는 대단히 다정하고 관심 있는 듯한 말투를 구사하고 있다. 이것은 데이지가 그만큼 자기 마음을 완벽하게 숨길 수 있는 사람이라는 것을 보여주기도 한다. 데이지에 대해서 거의 알지 못하는 닉은 데이지가 진심으로 자기에게 rose 같다고 말한 것으로 생각하고 있다. 데이지가 진심으로 rose같다고 말했다가 갑자기 냅킨을 내던지고 나가버리는 일이 벌어지자 닉은 사실상 어리벙벙했을 것이다. 뒤에 19:24에서 닉이 무슨 일이냐고 innocently 물어봤다는 말에서 닉이 상황 파악을 하지 못하고 데이지의 말을 진심으로 받아들였다는 것을 알 수 있다. 톰은 자기를 absolute rose라고 한 것이 데이지가 그녀의 그 말 속에 그녀의 진심을 담아서 한 표현이라고 생각하고 있다.

Miss Baker and I exchanged a short glance consciously devoid of meaning. I was about to speak when she sat up alertly and said “Sh!” in a warning voice. A subdued impassioned murmur was audible in the room beyond and Miss Baker leaned forward, unashamed, trying to hear. The murmur trembled on the verge of coherence, sank down, mounted excitedly, and then ceased altogether.

consciously devoid of meaning : ’의미 없이 의식적으로‘ 시선을 교환했다는 것인데, 의미를 주지 않으려고 의식적으로 노력하는 모습이다. 갑자기 나가버린 데이지에 대해서 괘념치 말자고 하는 두 사람 사이에 암묵적인 합의가 이루어졌음을 보여준다.

Miss Baker leaned forward, unashamed, trying to hear : 지금까지 베이커 양은 철저하게 균형을 유지하는 모습을 그려보여주었는데 여기서는 기울어지는(lean forward) 모습을 통해서 균형이 무너지는 모습을 보여주고 있다. 이제까지는 매우 우아한 모습으로 그려지고 있었는데 톰 부부의 말을 엿듣는 데 있어서는 창피한 것도 모르고 하고 있다. 베이커 양이 평소에도 남의 말을 엿듣는 것에 대해서는 거리낌이 없었다는 것을 알게 해준다. 이는 위선적인 태도임에 틀림이 없다. 상류층의 도덕적 불감증의 한 예로 볼 수 있다.

on the verge of coherence, sank down, mounted excitedly, and then ceased altogether : 저쪽에서 들려오는 말이 명확하게 들리지 않고 감정적으로 높아졌다 낮아졌다가 멈추는 상황을 표현한 것이다.

“This Mr. Gatsby you spoke of is my neighbor—” I said.

“Don’t talk. I want to hear what happens.”

“Is something happening?” I inquired innocently.

“You mean to say you don’t know?” said Miss Baker, honestly surprised. “I thought everybody knew.”

“I don’t.”

“Why—” she said hesitantly, “Tom’s got some woman in New York.”

“Got some woman?” I repeated blankly.

- 베이커 양은 누구나 다 아는 사실을 닉 혼자만 모르는 것을 의아하게 생각하고 있다.

19:21-30에서 사용된 부사들 : excitedly, innocently, honestly, hesitantly, blankly.

Miss Baker nodded.

“She might have the decency not to telephone him at dinner-time. Don’t you think?”

decency 체면, 품위 : 톰 부부의 대화를 엿들은 일은 decency를 지킨 일이라고 할 수 없는데 톰에게 decency를 요구하는 것을 보면 베이커 양은 남의 대화를 엿듣는 일이 자신의 decency를 손상시킨다고 생각하지 않고 있다는 것을 알게 해준다.

Almost before I had grasped her meaning there was the flutter of a dress and the crunch of leather boots and Tom and Daisy were back at the table.

- the flutter of a dress는 데이지가 오고 있다는 뜻이고, the crunch of leather boots는 톰이 오고 있다는 뜻이다. 두 사람의 하체를 연상케 하는 표현을 사용한다. 닉이 두 사람의 얼굴을 보지 못하고 눈을 내려깔고 있음을 암시한다. 톰의 외도 사실을 알게 된 닉이 난처함을 느끼고 있는 것으로 보인다.

“It couldn’t be helped!” cried Daisy with tense gayety.

tense gayety : gayety는 tense한 상태에서는 나올 수 없는데 데이지는 그렇게 하고 있다. 데이지가 비정상적인 행태를 잘 해낼 수 있다는 것을 보여준다.

She sat down, glanced searchingly at Miss Baker and then at me and continued: “I looked outdoors for a minute and it’s very romantic outdoors. There’s a bird on the lawn that I think must be a nightingale come over on the Cunard or White Star Line. He’s singing away—-” her voice sang “—-It’s romantic, isn’t it, Tom?”

“Very romantic,” he said, and then miserably to me: “If it’s light enough after dinner I want to take you down to the stables.”

- her voice sang : 남편과 말다툼을 하고 와서 집 밖을 보고 왔다고 거짓말을 하는데 노래하는 것처럼 말하고 있다는 것은 데이지가 자기의 감정을 완벽하게 감출 수 있는 사람이라는 것을 알게 해준다. 이것은 데이지의 정신 건강이 좋지 않다는 것을 보여주고 있다.

miserably : 데이지는 억지로 꾸며서라도 기분좋은 티를 내는데(with tense gayety) 톰은 ‘very miserably’한 모습을 보이면서 자기의 진짜 기분을 숨기려고 하지 않는다. 속으로는 즐겁지 않으면서 겉으로 즐거운 모습을 보이려고 애쓰는 데이지가 톰에게는 miserable하게 느껴진 것으로 볼 수도 있고, 이런 상황 자체가 톰 자신에게 miserable하게 느껴진 것으로 볼 수도 있다.

stables : 여기 마구간에는 엄청나게 비싼 폴로 말들이 있는 곳으로 톰이 자신의 부를 자랑할 수 있는 곳이다: he’d brought down a string of polo ponies from Lake Forest. It was hard to realize that a man in my own generation was wealthy enough to do that(10:19-20). 톰은 데이지의 기분과는 상관없이 자기의 생각과 계획에 몰두해 있는 것을 볼 수 있다.

The telephone rang inside, startlingly, and as Daisy shook her head decisively at Tom the subject of the stables, in fact all subjects, vanished into air. Among the broken fragments of the last five minutes at table I remember the candles being lit again, pointlessly, and I was conscious of wanting to look squarely at every one and yet to avoid all eyes. I couldn’t guess what Daisy and Tom were thinking but I doubt if even Miss Baker who seemed to have mastered a certain hardy skepticism was able utterly to put this fifth guest’s shrill metallic urgency out of mind. To a certain temperament the situation might have seemed intriguing–my own instinct was to telephone immediately for the police.

hardy skepticism : hardy는 열악한 환경을 견뎌내고 생존하는 식물이나 사람을 묘사할 때 사용하는 단어. 베이커가 톰과 데이지 부부 사이에서 곤란한 지경에 처해본 경험이 많다는 것을 알게 해준다. skepticism 회의론 혹은 회의주의는 특정한 사실에 대해 의심하거나 믿지 못하는 태도, 혹은 감각에 기반한 증거를 의심하면서 판단을 유보하는 태도 등 다양한 의미를 띤다. 이 맥락에서는 강인한 회의론의 대가인 베이커 양조차도 톰의 애인으로 ‘추정되는 다 섯 번째’ 손님이 계속 전화를 걸어 대 금속성의 전화벨이 다급하게 울리는 것에 의연할 수 없음을 전달하고 있다. ‘《위대한 개츠비》는 현대의 삶에 대한 또 다른 냉정한 사실을 밝힌다. 신이 더 이상 존재하지 않는다는 사실이다. 《개츠비》는 1차 대전 이후 쓰인 신학적으로 회의적이고 오만한 걸작군에 속한다. intriguing : ‘(특이하거나 분명한 해답이 없어서) 아주 흥미로운’이라는 뜻을 가진 단어로(네이버사전) 이 상황에 적합하게 사용된 단어로 보인다.
