The Bible Text from https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.17.NIV
Priestly Prayer of Jesus
Jesus Prays to Be Glorified
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. (The glory that Jesus wanted was the confirmation of God for His being and ministry.)
2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. (Jesus had accomplished God's plan of salvation for those believers.)
3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. (Jesus had revealed who God and Himself are. Knowing God and His only Son Jesus is the way of eternal life in the Kingdom of God.)
4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. (The obedience to God for the salvation of the believers is the way of glorifying God.)
5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. (Jesus has been full of the glory of God from the beginning, 1:14, but He asks God for His glory. This request is not for Himself but for those followers. V. 22)
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.(Jesus recruited the disciples whom God gave Jesus, and returns them to God. The believers now have the direct access through Jesus. Now we can call God Abba Father. 1:12, Mt. 6:9, Rom. 8:15, Gal. 4:6)
7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. (Jesus had accomplished His mission, which is revealing who God truly is. Heb. 1:1-3)
8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. (The disciples came to the fuller knowledge of God and Jesus the Son of God, because of the ministry of Jesus. He Proclaimed the Gospel of the Kingdom of God- what to believe in, Taught the word- how to live of, and Healed the sicks- to live, believe, and serve with. Mt. 4:23, Lk. 4:18)
9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. (Jesus really cherished the selected and committed twelve because they will be the active agents of the new era after Jesus.)
10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. (Jesus relies on God for the healthy and enduring ministry of the disciples.) And glory has come to me through them. (Having them, disciplining them was the most important ministry of Jesus.)
11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. (This is the end time for Jesus to leave them behind and going back to the Father.) Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. (Jesus asks God's protection not only for their safety but also for their unity.)
12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture (OT) would be fulfilled (Mt. 5:17). (Jesus protected the disciples while He was with them.)
13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. (The Jesus' prayer is two-folded. Praying to God and comforting and encouraging the disciples.)
14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. (The disciples were enlightened with the word and elected/sanctified from the world by Jesus.)
15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. (Not for the isolation but for the protection from the evil world and evil desire.)
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. (They didn't belong to the world as Jesus didn't)
17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. (They must be distinguished holy from the contaminated world with the Word of God.)
18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. (God had commissioned Jesus, now Jesus commissions the disciples to the world. The relationship of the three parts is organic.)
19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. (Jesus came to the world but not belonged to the world. The disciples were called to be the same of Jesus, They should represent the Lord to the world.)
Jesus Prays for All Believers
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, (Jesus also prays for those who will came to the Lord through the ministry of the disciples.) 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. (The unity of the Triune God should be the divine model of the unity of the believers.) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. (The believers, and the body of believers- the church must be in harmony in faith and obedient actions, so that we all together truly represent the Kingdom of God to the world. In God, we live together, believe together, serve together, to be blessed, to be blessings, for His glory.)
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one- 23 I in them and you in me- so that they may be brought to complete unity. (Jesus shares His glory with the disciples in unity.) Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. (This is how we do the Kingdom Business; To be the salt and light of the world for the glory of the Father God. Mt. 5:13-16)
24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. (The unity of the Father God and the Son of God has revealed in the same glory and love. Jesus and His disciples are also the same.)
25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. (The unity of the Triune God.)
26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” (Knowing is believing, believing is salvation. v. 3, Jesus has done the mission of revealing God in the unity and love.)
Reflection
Jesus prays for Himself, His chosen disciples, and all believers at the last moment of His dwelling on the earth.
This is His prayer to God and also the disclosure to the disciples.
There are some important concept in this prayer.
Glory,
Unity,
Being Called Out,
Sanctification,
Commission,
Inclusive Love.
& etc.
What and how we may learn from the list of these concepts?
Glory is the exclusive characteristic of the Creator, Father God.
The glory can be, and must be shared in unity based on the LOVE, by being unified or homogenized together, as God and Jesus, as Jesus and we, as God and we, and all together in the identity and ministry.
The disciples and we are called out for a mission that we must bring the whole world, as many as God intends, to this UNITY; the expansion and completion of the Kingdom of God in Unity. (The Book of Acts)
For this mission we must be called out from the world to be sanctified, for the world with the love of God.
It requires our being and ministries.
How we may achieve it?
Please let us spend more time on this prayer for our blessings and for His glory.
