2. Receptivity(重地坤,중지곤 - Kun Hexagram). ䷁ ......3
▣ Sixin the Second line :
Straight, square, and great.
without practice, nothing is unfavorable.
[Explanation]
(Six in the Second Line) means being straight on the inside,
remaining square and upright on the outside, and having greatness.
Without repeated effort, nothing will be ungavorable.
[Commentary]
(Six in the Second Line) is the principal line of the gentle, submissive, central,
and correct Kun Hexagram(坤卦,곤괘).
It represents possessing honesty and uprightness,
whether as a maiden before marriage or a maiden before marriage or as housewife after marriage.
A woman accepting a man corresponds to 'Straightness'(直,직), a woman managing household
affairs corresponds to 'Squarness'(方,방), and fulfilling the Way of Womanhood(女道,여도)
corresponds to 'Greatness'(大,대).
When such a gentle and compliant attitude is fully established,
and one's actions possess righteousness, straightness, and uprightness,
what more could ane ask for?
Therefore, Confucius annotated the Line Symbolism(爻象,효상) as follows :
"The movement of (Six in the Second Line) is straight and square [六二之動 直以方也,
Yugi- ji-dong Jik-i-bang-ya], annd because there is no disadvantage
even without repeated practice [不習无不利,불습무불리 - Bul-seup-mu-bul-li],
the Way of the Earth shines brilliantly [地道光也,지도광야 - Ji-do-gwang-ya]."
The Kun Hexagram(坤卦,곤괘) represents the vast earth.
Only when the great earth carries vast, deep, and expansive love can flowers bloom
and fruit bear across the ten Directions of the Univewse(十方世界,시방세계).
Line 2 is the case where the Kun Hexagram(坤卦,곤괘) changes into the Shi Hexagram
The Army).
The Shi Hexagram (師卦,사괘) originates from the Fu hexagram(復卦,복괘 - Return).
In the Fu hexagram(復卦,복괘), there is a basis for self-cultivation as the noble person,
from the lowest position, respects and elevates petty men and Yin(陰,음)
In the Shi Hexagram (師卦,사괘), Kan(坎,감) inside is strong / upright while the outside
is square /proper, which constitutes 'Straight and Square'(直以方,직이방).
'Greatness without repeated practice'(大不習,대불습) means that strength is not duplicated.
This means Kan(坎,감) is manifested only below, without repeating Kan(坎,감).
Furthemore, since the outer trigram Kun(坤,곤) does not lose the Way of gentle compliance
and preserves inner strength only within, it achieves 'Straight, square, and great ;
without practice, nothing is unfavorable'(直方大不習无不利,직방대불습무불리).
refer to the upright internal character and the square,
honorable external appearance of Kan(坎,감 - the water trigram).
Even in Dongpa(East Slope), if a woman possessed righteousness and honesty,
it was considered a truly remarkable thing.
Compliance givess birth to straightness, and straightness gives birth to squareness
(uprightness / rectitude).
The emergence of greatness through squareness does not happen because a noble
person(Junjia) intends; rather, because they followed principle and remained free
of self-interest, "Straightness, squareness, and Greatness[直方大,직방대]" arose naturally.
Therefore, "Even without learning, there is nothing disadvantageous,
and even if learning brings benefit, that benefit will not exceed the scope of what was learned."
In the Wenyan Zhuan(Commentary on the Words of the Text), Confucius emphasizes once more:
'''Straightness' means that the state of the mind is upright [
'Squareness' is righteousnesss [
A noble person makes the inner sself straight through reverence /respect [
and shapes the outer self through righteousness
If a noble person can establish reverence and righteousness,
their life will never be lonelt
'Straightness, squareness, and greatness, unpracticed yet nothing is disadvantageous
[直方大不習无不利,직방대불습무불리]' mmeans conduct that can never be doubted
Kan(坎,감) is square on the outside with its four broken lines,
and straight at its center where a single solid line maintains the core.
In Kan(坎,감), 'Straightness[直,직]' and 'Squareness[方,방]' coexist [乾道直方坤道也,건도직방곤도야].
Under the scholarly lineagess of Nammyeong and Toegye,"Straightness, Squareness,
and Greatness[直方大,직방대]" wass taken as a family motto or moral lesson.
They engraved in their hearts "Inner clarity through reverence[內明者敬,내명자경]",
and " Reverence, resspect, and grace[敬恭惠義,경공혜의].
Likewise, it was said : "If a person lives without uprightness, surviving death is merely
a matter of lucky escape[人之生也直 罔之生也 幸而免, 인지생야직 망지생야 행이면]."
Gyeomjae Ha Hong-do was famous for cultivating himself cleanly and practicing
whith his whole body to never be petty or compromising,
considering it deeply shameful to fall into anything that was not the highest principle.
"Straightness inside through reverence[敬以直內,경이직내]" is dealt with extensively,
especially in the Simgyeong Buju(Annotated Classic of the Mind).
For reference, if one obtains the position of the queen/ consort or the second-in-command
while remaining upright and knowing one's proper place,
descendants will proper, and joyful events will follow.
Since this is the position where the Kun hexagram(坤卦,곤괘) changes into
the Jisu- sa hexagram(地水師,지수사), one will receive the highest treatment in that field.
Let us also refer to the Silk Text I Ching(Mawangdui I Ching).
