On January 15, 2022, Shine City Project spent an entire day together in Henderson and Boulder City! On Saturday morning, our volunteers met at Acacia Park in Henderson for a cleanup with Get Outdoors Nevada! Our ten volunteers helped to pick up litter along the Union Pacific Railroad Trail, a trail that runs alongside the tracks of the historic Union Pacific Railroad. The trail is well-maintained and is perfect for pedestrians and bicyclists.
In the beginning, our volunteers couldn't find so much trash, but after walking several minutes, there were areas along the trail that were heavily littered. These areas include a water drainage area and a dirt lot adjacent to some residential homes. We found an assortment of items including food packaging, childrens clothes, and a BBQ grill. In the end, with the help of all of the volunteers who were present, including our group, a total of 262 pounds of trash was collected!
Afterwards, our Shine City Project group made a short drive to Boulder City to Hemenway Park! At this park, we could enjoy a view of Lake Mead while observing some wild bighorn sheep! Even though it was a little cold, we enjoyed our lunch of deli wraps while taking in the beautiful scenery. It was a great opportunity being able to see bighorn sheep, our state animal, while seeing Lake Mead! It was a great picnic spot!
Later in the afternoon, after filling our stomachs, we made our way to the Nevada State Railroad Museum! At this museum, visitors can learn more about Southern Nevada's railroad history, as well as experience a ride on one of the trains! The museum manages a section of tracks that once belonged to the Union Pacific Railroad and which were essential in supporting the construction activities of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s. The rail helped to transport equipment, supplies, and workers in between Boulder City and the Hoover Dam.
Our Shine City Project group was able to walk around the museum, explore a couple of the exhibits, and enjoy a 40-minute train ride! On the train ride, our group rode in an open-air train car while feeling the cool breeze and taking in the mountainous views. We were also lucky enough to be granted permission by the conductor to go inside the caboose and sound the train whistle! After our experience, we ended the day with some boba and card games! Overall, it was a great time of service and fellowship with each other, and we hope to do another trip together again!
