Bedazzled Jesus
A few weeks ago, YouAreMyAngelDasom sent me a video of another person decorating a miniature Jesus figurine with gems, just like the image shown below.
I didn’t think of it as anything in particular. I thought it was cute, and I thought, “Young kids these days do all kinds of things to Jesus.” Turns out, YouAreMyAngelDasom’s sister had the same figurine, so YouAreMyAngelDasom decided to follow the trend of making the figurine sparkle and gave it to me.
I thought it was a funny joke and laughed it off. However, little did I realize that there was something waiting for me in the prayer room.
----------Background-----------------
On a weekly basis, I go to a local American church called New Life Church to pray. There is a prayer room inside, and I go there whenever I have the chance. It is a beautiful room with Christian décor, modern sofas, and furnishings. No one usually uses the room, so it is always empty for me to use.
In the prayer room, there was a décor piece I wasn’t really fond of. It was this cross:
The shattered look of the glass on the cross didn’t look that great to me. On the side of the cross, there is a plaque explaining the artist’s meaning. It says that the broken glass represents broken people and that Jesus bore that brokenness on the cross.
Even the meaning didn’t look very appealing to me. So, I prayed to God, asking if He could change the design.
------------------------------------------
However, a few days after I saw the sparkling Jesus figurine from YouAreMyAngelDasom, I entered the prayer room. It was the very same room I entered daily, with the very same cross decoration, but something looked different. It looked different not because anything had changed in the room, but because my eyes had changed. The cross was sparkling (dazzling) because of the glass. I no longer saw the cross as a cross that bore broken glass representing broken people. Instead, I saw the glass as a dazzling Jesus!
In other words, the cross became trendy, fashion-forward, popular, cool, and in style.
This whole time, the cross had been shining before me, saying, “Look at me! I look cool!” But because I was blind, I saw a sad cross that bore our sins. I saw the same typical meaning that anyone might decipher when looking at a cross. Even the artist’s intention was not to create a “cool” or “fashion-forward” cross, but rather to tell a story of how Jesus took on our brokenness. I’m not negating the artist’s intended meaning. However, I now see something different: the cross symbol is so cool in that room!
That Sunday, at Carl’s Jr., I met with the Hodahnites, and LivingWater shared that she had a dream about glass in front of her, with DK across from her. She mentioned that she thought the glass represented her brokenness and that she had to give it to Jesus.
But I immediately thought of my cool, bedazzled cross in the prayer room. I knew that her brokenness was already with Jesus, and I knew that it was so beautiful now because her broken glass was with Him.
I had the opportunity to share the Bedazzled Jesus story during the Hodah meeting. YouAreMyAngelDasom shared the first part of the testimony, and I shared the second portion. I showed the figurine that YouAreMyAngelDasom had made to the Hodah members.
During the sharing time, I felt the Holy Spirit come strongly upon me. I had a difficult time getting the words out, and my body began to shake. Nevertheless, the testimony was shared.
After the testimony was over, I slipped the Jesus figurine into my purse.
On the way back home, I thought to myself, “This testimony isn’t really that powerful to me. It’s just a fun testimony,” I thought. It was a “mini” testimony—nothing too deep, no wow factor. But why did I feel physical impartation?
I thought it was strange. I thought that I would experience physical impartation only when I shared something really “deep” and “powerful.”
But a few days later, I understood why it wasn’t just a small testimony.
I walked into the prayer room once more and said, “I am here, Jesus. Good morning,” to the fashionable, sparkling cross, and began to pray.
However, this time, I didn’t want to sit on the sofa and pray. I wanted to walk around the room instead. So, I walked around the room, praying for a few minutes as I circled it about three or four times.
Then, on the fifth time I walked around the room, I saw the mini Jesus figurine (not decorated one). It was the very same one that YouAreMyAngelDasom had decorated for me. I remembered that the figurine was still in my purse, so I took it out to take a picture to show YouAreMyAngelDasom (see image and video below).
However, at that very moment, I realized something powerful.
That mini Jesus figurine had been there the whole time.
I didn’t know. Jesus had been behind me during every one of my prayers. Jesus was waiting for me in that room, and I had never thought of it that way. Jesus was there the WHOLE time! I’ve been going there for over three years and never once thought, “He is behind me during my prayers.” I thought He was just floating around somewhere, listening.
No, He is RIGHT behind me. Every prayer I prayed there, every nap I took there, every cry, every laugh, every moment of joy, peace, hunger, and fulfillment—He saw me through it all.
This realization brought me to tears. Tears of joy flowed. To have physical evidence of Jesus being behind me was surreal, and God needed me to see that. Because of my little faith, God had to show me through the mini Jesus figurine that He had been behind me during every prayer in that room.
So now, when I go there to pray, I look FORWARD to seeing the dazzling cross and knowing that Jesus is powerfully BEHIND me.
Therefore, nothing can stop me from praying a powerful prayer to God!
