PARANOIA IN REVERSE  편집증의 반대

1 John 4:1-6,17-19

1991년 모스크바 거리에서 비폭력혁명이 일어났을 때의 텔레비전 뉴스보도가 기억납니다.

I remember watching television news reports in 1991

as the nonviolent revolution

took place in the streets of Moscow.

전체주의 체제에서 살아온 러시아인들이

별안간 “우리는 자유인인 것처럼 행동하겠다.”

고 선포하고 거리를 점거하고 탱크와 마주했습니다.

Russians who had grown up

in totalitarianism suddenly declared,

“We will act as if we are free,”

taking to the streets and staring down tanks.

안에 있는 정치지도자들과 밖에 있는 군중들의 얼굴을 대비해 보여준 화면은,

누가 진정으로 두려워하고 있으며

누가 진정으로 자유로운가를 보여주었습니다.

The contrast between the faces of the leaders inside

and the masses outside showed

who was really afraid, and who was really free.

핀란드 텔레비전을 통해 붉은 광장으로부터의 뉴스를 보면서,

나는 믿음에 대한 정의를 새롭게 내리게 되었습니다.

편집증의 반대라고 말입니다.

Watching the newsreels from Red Square on Finnish television,

I came up with a new definition of faith:

paranoia in reverse.

실제로 편집증 환자는 두려움이라는 공통적인 관점 아래 삶을 꾸려나갑니다.

일어나는 모든 것들이 두려움을 불러일으키는 것입니다.

A truly paranoid person organizes his or her life

around a common perspective of fear.

Anything that happens feeds that fear.

그러나 믿음은 반대로 작동합니다.

신앙인은 두려움이 아닌 믿음이라는 공통적인 관점 아래 삶을 꾸려나갑니다.

지금 이 순간 명백히 혼란스럽게 보일지라도 하나님이 다스리고 계십니다.

나의 느낌과는 상관없이 나는 사랑의 하나님께 매우 중요한 존재입니다.

Faith works in reverse.

A faithful person organizes his or her life

around a common perspective of trust, not fear.

Despite the apparent chaos of the present moment,

God does reign.

Regardless of how I may feel,

I truly matter to a God of love.

하나님나라의 백성인 우리가 “너희 안에 계신 이가 세상에 있는 자보다 크심이라”(요일 4:4)

라고 한 요한사도의 말 그대로 실제로 행한다면 어떤 일이 벌어질까요?

What could happen if we in God’s kingdom truly acted 

as if the words of the apostle John were literally true:

“He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world”.

기독교계에서 가장 많이 사용되는 기도,

“하나님의 뜻이 하늘에서 이룬 것 같이 땅에서도 이루어지이다”

가 실제로 응답된 것처럼 우리가 삶을 살기 시작한다면 어떻게 될까요

What if we really started living

as if the most-repeated prayer in Christendom

has actually been answered

─that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven?
