Poen de Wijs

Poen de Wijs belongs to that generation of painters who, in the 1970s, sought a path back to realism. He rediscovered many old realistic techniques, in watercolour, oil painting and lithography, and later presented the tradition in modern acrylics. At the end of the 1970s he broke into the Amsterdam gallery world and acquired an international reputation with phonograph record sleeves for the musical group Flairck.
After many exhibitions worldwide he found in De Twee Pauwen a gallery that has represented him in The Netherlands since 1993. Many successful exhibitions followed in succession, with such themes as "Alma Musica” in 1993, "The Geisha’s Clothing” in 2000, "Prima Vista, Mini and Maxi in Portrait” in 2002, "Time and Space”, "Travels", and now "30 year Fred Delfgaauw" and "Carnaval des Animaux" in 2012
Poen de Wijs is not just like a realist in the 19th century tradition. His experiments with paint and image and his vision of the world show that he is a contemporary painter. In his earlier period he combined nudes with abstract elements. Later he combined images from art history with contemporary subject matter. Since the 1990s he has interwoven the current theme of cultural integration into almost all his works. Poen paints the people of today, young and old, men and women of all races and cultures. He surrounds them with animals, with musical instruments, with still lifes, with decorative patterns, with structures, in a virtuoso game and with brilliant technique. In his latest collection, including "Time and Space”, he raises the question of philosophical issues, which has given his works more meaning.
Poen de Wijs has made an impressive series of ebooks in which he shows his entire oeuvre and about his techniques of painting and lythography.
