My Grandpa in Cheongsong
Doesn't own a smartphone; instead

Every dawn a sparrow comes
To bring him the news

It hops around the yard

boldog boldog

chirp chirp chirp
chirp chirp chirp

The sparrow's KaTalk notification
Rings through the morning

The moment Grandpa hears it
He wakes with a smile

The sparrow shakes the news
From its little wings
And lays it gently before him

News from my youngest uncle in Busan
News from my aunt in Seoul
Even news that Grandma in heaven
Still worrying about Grandpa

"Yes, yes, thank you!"

Grandpa laughs, scattering a handful of rice
He has not yet finished washing for breakfast

The sparrow never stays in one place

It hops here and there
Pecking busily as though every grain matters

When I lift my smartphone
To record this grateful little messenger
And show the video to Grandpa

The sparrow becomes even busier

As if testing my filming skills

If only
This summer vacation
Could last a few days longer

Grandpa's rice cooker
Never loses its focus

청송 우리 할아버지는
스마트폰이 없어도
참새가 새벽마다 찾아와
소식을 전해준다
 
마당을 
볼독볼독
뛰어다니며

짹짹짹 
짹짹짹

알림음을 울리는
참새의 카톡

그 소리를 듣고
할아버지 
일어나시면

참새는 날개 가득
묻혀온 
새 소식을 
툭툭 털어 내려놓는다

부산 사는 작은 삼촌 소식 
서울 사는 고모 소식
하늘나라 할머니가 
할아버지 걱정하는 마음까지

“그래, 그래, 고맙다!”
할아버지가 활짝 웃으시며
아침 준비로 씻다 만 
쌀 한 줌 흩뿌려 주면

참새는 한 자리에 앉아 먹지 않고
볼독볼독 뛰어다니며
꼭꼭꼭 부지런히 쪼아 먹는다

고마운 참새
스마트폰 화면에 담아
할아버지에게 보여드리려고
동영상을 켜면

참새는 더욱 
볼독볼독 뛰어다니며
내 촬영 솜씨를 
시험해 본다

이번 여름 방학
며칠만 더 길었으면

할아버지 밥솥은 
한눈팔지 않는구나!

D.J. Yoon's ‘Sparrow's KaTalk’ portrays a sparrow that visits an elderly grandfather in Cheongsong every dawn as a messenger of news in place of a smartphone. By ingeniously combining KaTalk, Korea's most familiar digital communication platform, with the cheerful chirping of a sparrow in a traditional rural setting, the poem warmly and humorously expresses longing for family, the quiet loneliness of old age, and the affectionate bond between a grandson and his grandfather.
