1. say 와 tell
① 표면적으로는 둘 다 '말하다'라는 의미를 갖지만 특히 'tell은 어떤 것을 알려주거나(inform) 가르칠 (instruct) 때' 쓴다. 이런 의미로는 say를 쓸 수 없다.
He said to me that it was my last chance.
→ He told me that it was my last chance.
He said to me 'Good morning.'
↔ He told me, 'Good morning.'(*)
'What's your problem?' I said.
↔ 'What's your problem?' I told her.(*)
② tell 뒤에는 말을 듣는 대상(사람)이 와야한다(목적어로 사람을 취한다). 반면에 say는 사람을 목적어로 취하지 않는다. 사람을 표시하려면 전치사 to를 붙인다. 예외적으로 tell a lie, tell a story/joke, tell the truth 등에는 사람을 목적어로 쓰지 않는다.
She told me that she would be late.
She told that she would be late.(*)
She said me that she would be late.(*)
She said to me that she would be late.
③ tell의 목적어로 a word, a name, a sentence, a phrase 등이 올 때는 tell을 쓰지 못한다. say를 쓴다.

④ tell은 목적보어에 to부정사를 취할 수 있지만 say는 목적보어를 취할 수 없다.
I told the children to go away.
I said the children to go away.(*)
⑤ say나 tell은 간접적으로 질문하는 문장을 이끌 수 없다.
Bill said whether I wanted to see a film.(*)
Bill told whether I wanted to see a film.(*)
Bill asked whether I wanted to see a film.
2. see와 look (at) 그리고 watch
① see는 주의를 기울이든 기울이지 않든 눈에 들어오는 어떤 것을 보는 것을 말한다. 이러한 의미로 쓰일 때는 진행형을 쓰지 않는다.
Suddenly I saw something strange.
Suddenly I looked at something strange.(*)
② look은 집중을 하거나 관심을 기울여 무엇이 있는 살펴보는 것을 말한다. look은 전치사를 동반하지만 의문사절을 이끌 때는 종종 이 전치사가 생략된다.
I looked at the photo. but I didn't see anybody I knew.
He looked at her with his eyes full of love.
Look (at) what you've done!
Look who's here!
Look where you're going.
③ watch는 뭔가가 일어나고 있거나 뭔가가 일어날 것이라는 것을 내포하고 있다. 따라서 변하거나(change) 움직이거나(move) 발전하는(develop) 어떤 것을 볼 때 쓸 수 있다.
Watch that man - I want to know everything he does.
I usually watch a football match on Saturday afternoon.
④ watch는 진행중인 어떤 것을 볼 때 쓴다. 반면에 see는 영화나 연극 혹은 공연 등을 전부를 본 것에 대해 쓴다.
He got into a fight while he was watching a football match.
He got into a fight while he was seeing a football match.(*)

⑤ 일반적으로 TV를 볼 때는 watch를, TV 프로그램이나 영화에 대해 이야기 할 때는 watch나 see를 쓴다.
You spend too much time watching TV.
We watched/saw a great film on TV last night.
Did you watch/see 'Snow White' on Thursday?
⑥ see 다음에는 if나 whether 절이 올 수 있으나 watch나 look 뒤에는 올 수 없다. 이 경우 see는 '알아보다(find out)'는 의미를 갖는다.

3. How와 What ... like
① 사람의 감정이나 건강상태 등 변하는 어떤 것에 대해 물을 때는 how를 쓴다. 반면에 사람의 성격이나 외모 등 변하지 않는 어떤 것에 대해 이야기할 때는 what ... like를 쓴다.
'How's Ron?' 'He's very well.'
'What's Ron like?' 'He's quiet and a bit shy.'
'How does she look today?' 'Tired.'
'What does your sister look like?' 'Short and dark, pretty looking.'
② 사람의 반응이나 경험을 물을 때는 how를 쓴다.
'How was the film?' 'Very good.'
How's your steak?
How's your new job?
4. small과 little
① small은 단순히 크기를 언급하기 때문에 large나 big의 반대말로 쓰이지만 little은 크기를 언급할 뿐만 아니라 여기에는 감정까지 포함되어 있다.
Could I have a small brandy, please?
You're too small to be a policeman.
Poor little thing - come here and let me look after you.
They bought a pretty little house in the country.
② 다음의 표현은 small과 같은 의미지만 굳어진 표현이다.

5. when과 if
① when이 미래를 나타내는 문장을 이끌 때 어떤 것이 일어날 것이라는 것을 확신할 때 쓴다. 반면에 if는 일어날지 그렇지 않은지 확신할 수 없을 때 쓴다.
I'll see you at Christmas when we're all at Sally's place.
(=We are certain to be at Sally' place.)
I'll see you in August if I come to New York.
(=Perhaps I'll come to New York, perhaps not.)
② 반복되고 예측 가능한 것에 대해 이야기할 때는 when가 if 모두 별 차이 없이 사용한다.
When/If you heat ice it turns to water.
When/If I'm in Liverpool I usually stay with my sister.
6. whether과 if
① whether과 if는 모두 간접의문문을 이끈다.
I'm not sure whether/if I'll have time.
I asked whether/if she had any letters for me.
② 'or'이 올 때는 whether을 쓴다.
Let me know whether you can come or not.
③ 간접의문문이 앞에 올 때는 whether을 쓴다.
Whether I'll have time I'm not sure at the moment.
④ 전치사 뒤에는 whether을 쓴다.
There was a big argument about whether we should move to a new house.
I haven't settled the question of whether I'll go back home.
⑤ to부정사 앞에는 whether이 온다.
They can't decide whether to get married now or wait.
⑥ whether이나 if가 이끄는 절이 주어가 되거나 보어가 될 때는 whether을 쓴다. 격식을 차리지 않는 문장에서는 if를 쓸 수도 있으나 일반적이지 않다.
Whether we can stay with my mother is another matter.
The question is whether the man can be trusted.
The question is if the man can be trusted.
⑦ discuss와 같은 동사는 if 보다는 whether을 쓴다.
We discussed whether we should close the shop.
7. get과 go
① get과 go는 모두 움직임을 나타내지만 go는 움직임 전체를 나타내고 get은 움직임의 끝을 나타낸다.
I go to work by car and Lucy goes by train. I usually get there first.
I went to a meeting yesterday.
I got to the meeting at about eight o'clock.
② 도착하는 데 어려움이 있다는 것을 나타낼 때 get을 쓴다.
It wasn't easy to get through the crowd.
I don't know how we're going to get over the river.
Can you tell me how to get to the police station?
8. affect와 effect
① affect는 '변화를 야기하다'는 의미의 동사다. 반면에 effect는 변화나 결과를 나타내는 명사다. have an effect는 affect의 의미로 쓰인다.
The cold weather affected everybody's work.
The war seriously affected petrol prices.
The war had a serious effect on petrol prices.
② 격식을 갖춘 문장에서 effect는 동사로 쓰일 수 있으며 '어떤 일을 수행하다, 야기하다'는 의미로 쓰인다.
We did not effect much improvement in sales last year.
9. fit와 suit
① fit는 크기와 형태를 언급할 때 사용한다.
If your clothes fit you, they are neither too big nor too small.
These shoes don't fit me - have you got a larger size?
② suit는 스타일이나 색깔을 언급할 때 쓴다.
Red and black are colors that suit me very well.
Do you think this style suits me?
③ suit는 상황이 맞는다(좋다)는 의미로도 쓰인다.
Tuesday would suit me very well for a meeting.
10. for + ing와 to 부정사의 목적
① 사람의 목적을 나타낼 때 for를 쓸 수 있지만 이 경우 반드시 for 뒤에는 명사가 와야 한다. 동사가 오면 to부정사를 써야 한다. for + -ing로 쓰지 않는다.
We stopped at the pub for a drink.
I went to the college for an interview with my friend.
We stopped at the pub to have a drink.
We stopped at the pub for having a drink.(*)
② 주어에 사물이 와서 사물의 목적을 나타낼 때는 'for + -ing'를 쓰고 주어에 사람이 와서 사람의 목적을 나타낼 때는 to부정사를 쓴다.
Is that cake for eating or just for looking at?
An altimeter is used for measuring height above sea level.
We use altimeters to measure height above sea level.
③ 이유를 나타낼 때는 'for + -ing'를 쓴다.
We are grateful to you for helping us out.
I'm angry with you for waking me up.
They punished the child for lying.
