Juwangsan, Framed by Pine Breeze and Apple Sunshine
by D.J. Yoon
When you first arrive in Cheongsong
You are surprised three times.
You discover that the painter Lee Won-jwa
Set aside his own beloved Juwangsan
To paint neighboring Cheongnyangsan
Where clouds descend and linger.
You are astonished
By the painting's breathtaking scale.
You are surprised again
By the generous hearts of the people of Cheongsong
Because there was nowhere grand enough
To display ’Cheongnyangsan Daeundo’.
They built a spacious gallery of its own
Giving the unseen masterpiece
The home it had long deserved.
If you were to quietly ask Juwangsan
Whether it ever feels a trace of regret
That the painter embraced the neighboring mountain
While leaving behind
The guardian of his own hometown.
It simply smiles
Pointing to the evergreen pines
The whispering pine breeze
And the warm apple sunshine
That ripens the orchards each autumn.
Yet the greatest surprise of all
Is that gentle smile.
It paints the mountainsides
With autumn leaves.
The color of ripe apples,
As though reminding every traveler
That whoever stands before Juwangsan
Should behold it in radiant wonder.
No matter how many times
A brush returns to the canvas
Correcting, refining, beginning again
Its beauty can never be fully captured.
Appreciation Review 感想
D.J. Yoon's Juwangsan, Framed by Pine Breeze and Apple Sunshine is a warm and beautiful poem about nature, kindness, and quiet confidence.
Instead of feeling disappointed that the painter Lee Won-jwa chose to paint nearby Cheongnyangsan, Juwangsan is imagined as smiling peacefully and taking pride in its own gifts.
The simple but vivid images of green pine trees, cool pine breezes, warm sunshine, and red apples create a clear and colorful picture of Cheongsong.
The poem's idea of being ‘surprised three times’ keeps readers interested and leads to the greatest surprise of all — the mountain's gentle smile.
In the final lines, the poet reminds us that no painting, no matter how carefully it is made, can fully capture Juwangsan's true beauty.
