It ceases to be a devil when it ceases to be a god

I do most thoroughly agree with what you saw about Art and Literature. 

To my mind they are only healthy /when they are either

(a) Definitely the handmaids of religious,

or at least moral, truth

– or (b) Admittedly aiming at nothing but innocent recreation or entertainment.

Dante’s already, and Pickwith is alright. 

But the great serious irreligious art – art for art’s sake – is all balderdash; 

and, incidentally, never exists /when art is really flourishing. 

In fact one can say of Art /as [an author () I recently read] says of Love (sensual love, I mean)

‘It ceases to be a devil /when it ceases to be a god.’ 

Isn’t that well put? 

So many things – nay, every real thing – is good /if only it will be humble and ordinate.

* ordinate ; arranged regularly in rows; orderly; disposed or arranged in an orderly or regular fashion.

To my mind 내 마음에게는 they 그것들은 are only 오로지 healthy 건실하다 /when 그때 they 그것들이 are either 둘 중 하나

(a) 첫째 Definitely 확실하게 the handmaids of religious 종교의 시녀/봉사자이거나,

or at least moral, truth 적어도 윤리적이고 사실일 때

– or (b) 둘째 Admittedly 진솔하게 aiming 지향하는 at nothing 다른 것 말고

but 단지 innocent 순수한 recreation 취미 거나 or entertainment 오락일 때.

Dante’s already 단테는 이미이고, and Pickwith is alright. 픽위드는 괜찮다


But 그러나 the great 대단히 serious 심각한 irreligious 반종교 art 예술은 – art for art’s sake 예술을 위한 예술인–

is all 모두 balderdash 허튼소리다; 

and 그리고, incidentally 우연히도, never 결코 exists 존재하지도 않았다

/when 그때 art 예술이 is really 진짜로 flourishing 흥왕 했을 때. 


In fact 사실 one 사람은 can say 말할 수 있다 of Art 예술에 대하여

/as 똑같이 [an author 한 작가가 (whom) 그는 I 내가 recently 최근에 read 읽은] says 말했듯 of Love 사랑에 관하여

(sensual love 육감적 사랑, I mean 내가 의미하는 바)

‘It 그건 ceases 단념된다 to be a devil 마귀가 되기를

/when 그때 it 그것이 ceases 단념될 때 to be a god 가짜신이 되기를.’ 

Isn’t that well put? 그게 잘 설명되지 않았소?


So many things 수많은 일들은– nay 아니, every real thing 모든 진정한 일들은 – is good 선하다

/if only 단지 it 그것이 will be humble 겸손하고 and ordinate 정렬되면/질서적이면.

모든 죄인들은 자기들이 신노릇 한다는 걸 인식하지 못하나

자기 말을 절대적으로 믿는다는 건 자기 말이 진리라는 거고

자기신뢰는 곧 자기 우상화 즉 신처럼  섬긴다는 사실이라

자기를 숭배하는 자기 우상화로 영광을 취하려 쌈질도 하니 
나오는 건 악이나 악을 선하다 믿으니 마귀 자식인 것이다
