“작은 무대의 변화, 아시아 연극의 창으로”

관객이 개입하는 연극, 역사를 다시 질문하는 무대

부산 공간소극장에서 열리는 Inter Asian Performance Festival(IAPF)가 5월 프로그램을 통해 또 하나의 질문을 던진다.

이번 프로그램은 싱가포르 대표 극단 Drama Box와 연출가 Kok Heng Leun을 초청하여, 공연 <학살에 관한 여섯 개의 강의(6 Micro Lectures on Genocide)>와 <포럼 씨어터 워크숍(Forum Theatre Workshop)>으로 구성된다.

IAPF는 지난 3월, 일본과 대만의 예술가들과 함께 “움직임과 부토 워크숍”, “HIBI-days”, “움직임 속의 주파수”, “느린 시선의 방”을 선보이며 아시아 내부의 감각과 질문을 공유하는 장을 열었다. 이번 5월 프로그램은 그 흐름을 이어, 아시아가 함께 겪어온 역사적 경험을 보다 직접적으로 무대 위에 호출한다.

<학살에 관한 여섯 개의 강의>는 전쟁과 집단학살이라는 주제를 텍스트, 퍼포먼스, 배우의 몸을 통해 구성한 작품이다. 이 작품은 특정한 사건을 재현하는 데 머무르지 않고, 아시아가 공통적으로 경험해온 폭력과 기억의 문제를 현재의 질문으로 끌어낸다. 배우의 낭독과 장면은 관객에게 정보를 전달하는 동시에, 그 역사 앞에서 우리는 무엇을 기억하고 어떤 태도를 취해야 하는가를 끊임없이 되묻는다.

이어 진행되는 <포럼 씨어터 워크숍>은 기존의 공연 형식을 넘어서는 참여형 연극이다. 브라질 연출가 Augusto Boal이 제안한 “억압받는 자들의 연극(Theatre of the Oppressed)”을 기반으로, 관객은 더 이상 객석에 머무르지 않는다. 관객은 무대에 개입하고, 장면을 멈추며, 다른 선택을 제안하고 직접 행동함으로써 이야기의 흐름을 바꾼다. 이 과정에서 연극은 재현이 아닌 실천의 공간으로 확장된다.

이러한 시도는 단순한 해외 초청 공연을 넘어, 아시아 내부에서 질문을 생산하고 공유하는 하나의 방식으로서 의미를 가진다. 전쟁, 식민지, 이념 갈등과 같은 역사적 경험을 공유해온 아시아가 서로를 경유하지 않고 직접 만나는 자리, 그리고 그 만남이 예술적 실천으로 이어지는 장이 바로 IAPF다.

IAPF는 공연을 보여주는 축제가 아니라, 질문을 생성하는 플랫폼이다.

이번 5월, 공간소극장에서 펼쳐지는 이 작업들은 묻는다.

우리는 무엇을 기억해야 하는가.

그리고, 우리는 무엇을 바꿀 수 있는가.

A Theatre Where the Audience Intervenes, Where History Is Questioned Again

The Inter Asian Performance Festival (IAPF), held at Space Theatre in Busan, returns this May with a new program that poses urgent questions.This edition features Singapore’s renowned theatre company Drama Box and director Kok Heng Leun, presenting 6 Micro Lectures on Genocide and the Forum Theatre Workshop.

In March, IAPF opened a space for shared sensibilities and questions within Asia through collaborations with artists from Japan and Taiwan, presenting works such as Butoh & Movement Workshop, HIBI-days, Frequency in Motion, and The Slow Viewing Room.The May program continues this trajectory, bringing Asia’s shared historical experiences more directly onto the stage.

6 Micro Lectures on Genocide explores themes of war and genocide through text, performance, and the body of the actor. Rather than reconstructing specific historical events, the work draws on the shared experiences of violence and memory across Asia, transforming them into questions of the present. Through readings and staged actions, the performance not only delivers information but continuously asks: What must we remember, and how should we respond to history?

The Forum Theatre Workshop presents a participatory theatrical form that challenges conventional boundaries between audience and performer. Based on the concept of Theatre of the Oppressed, developed by Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal, the audience no longer remains passive. Spectators intervene, stop scenes, propose alternatives, and take action—directly altering the course of the performance. In this process, theatre expands beyond representation into a space of practice.

This program goes beyond a simple international invitation. It represents a mode of exchange in which Asia generates and shares its own questions. While Asian societies have long shared historical experiences—war, colonialism, ideological conflict—direct exchanges within Asia have often been limited. IAPF creates a space where Asia meets itself, and where that encounter becomes artistic practice.

IAPF is not a festival that merely presents performances, but a platform that generates questions.This May, at Space Theatre, these works ask:

What must we remember? And what can we change?
