여호수아 8 : 10~23

[예림사랑]

남방에서부터 출발한 이스라엘은 파죽지세로 진군을 계속합니다. 이집트를 쑥대밭으로 만들고 아모리왕 시혼과 바산왕 옥을 정복합니다(민21, 신2) 38년전 거인족에 대한 두려움으로 자신들을 메뚜기와 같이 생각했던 10정탐군의 두려움을 아모리인을 정복함으로 해소하십니다.

홍해가 갈라지고 그 길은 건넌 히브리인들은 요단을 마른 땅과 같이 밟고 지납니다. 이 사건은 넘치는 물과 같은 가나안인들의 세력을 밟고 이길 것을 상징합니다. 견고한 성이면서 강대한 여리고를 일주일만에 짓밟은 그들은 아이성을 손쉬운 공략지로 생각합니다. 2~3000명 만 보내도 될 것같다는 정탐군의 보고는 이스라엘의 높아진 마음을 여실히 보여줍니다.

실패를 이기는 사람은 간혹 있어도 성공과 번영을 이기는 사람은 없다고 합니다. 대제국의 몰락은 가장 흥왕한 시기에 시작됩니다. 교만은 넘어짐의 앞잡이입니다. 모든 것이 형통할 때, 평안의 시대에 심판은 하늘을 가르고 급히 내려오는 독수리처럼 임합니다. 전쟁의 승패는 숫자의 많고 적음이나 성의 견고함에 있지 않음을 그동안 경험하였습니다. 하나님께서 함께 하시면 이기고 떠나시면 집니다. 죽음과 삶의 갈림길은 하나님의 함께 하심을 간절히 원하는지 아니면 자신의 힘을 믿는지에 달려있습니다.

오늘의 교회는 숫자에 집착합니다. 교세를 자랑하며 교회 구성원들은 아름다운 건물을 자부심으로 생각합니다. 그러나 하나님은 낮은 곳으로 임하신다고 합니다. 솔로몬의 황금 성전과 헤롯의 정교하고 아름다운 성전을 기억하는 이가 없습니다. 오직 스스로 성전되어 자신의 몸을 희생으로 바치신 예수님의 이름만 오고 오는 세대에 사람들의 기억에 남아 있습니다. 모든 것이 무너지고 불타 사라질 때 얼마나 아름다운 성전에서 고상한 예배를 드렸는지 묻지 않으십니다. 전심으로 간절히 필사적으로 드린 기도와 예배만 기억하실 것입니다.

높아진 히브리인들의 마음에 아간의 범죄는 적절한 포석으로 보입니다. 예수님의 십자가의 길을 지로한 유다처럼 아간은 죄악의 적은 누룩이 온 덩이에 퍼지게 하였습니다. 한 사람의 범죄는 공동체의 몰락으로 귀결됩니다. 그러나 썩은 부분을 도려내고 새롭게 시작할 때 하나님은 비로소 이스라엘과 함께 하시고 승리를 주십니다.

결사항전의 결의를 다지며 작은 승리에 들떠있던 아이성 사람들은 방심하기 시작했고, 이스라엘의 민심은 반복된 실패로 낮아지고 회개하며 하나님을 중심으로 결집하기 시작합니다. 우리는 패배와 실수를 통해 배웁니다. 좀더 지혜로와서 시간을 되돌릴 수 있다면 좋겠지만 대체로 사람의 마음은 자신의 허물을 간과하는 경향이 있습니다. 그래서 때리시고 어루만지시는 손길에 이끌려 여기까지 왔습니다.

한두번의 실수는 용납되지만 반복된 실패는 게으름과 완악함의 소치입니다. 다시는 넘어지지 않으리라 결심하고 주먹을 굳게 쥐고 달려도 쉽지 않은 인생의 경주에서 우리는 자주 실족하고 하나님을 원망합니다. 여리고성의 승리에 들떠 죄악을 대수롭지 않게 여긴 댓가는 너무도 혹독했습니다. 40년의 광야 방황기간이 물거품이 될 위기가 왔습니다. 그러나 심기일전하여 하나님을 의지하고 전심으로 싸울 때 하나님은 승리의 깃발을 꽂게 하십니다.

오늘도 나의 어리석음과 실수를 후회하며 애통해합니다. 천번을 넘어져도 붙들어 일으키시는 전능하신 손길을 의지합니다. 꾸짖지 않으시고 인자한 음성으로 타이르시는 선하신 주님의 얼굴을 다시 바라봅니다. 평화와 형통의 시기에 오히려 긴장을 늦추지 않고 경성하여 하나님을 간절히 바라며, 믿음의 주요 온전케 하시는 예수님만 바라보시는 성도님들 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

1. God’s Victories and Israel’s Pride
Israel advanced with unstoppable force, conquering King Sihon of the Amorites and King Og of Bashan (Numbers 21, Deuteronomy 2). The fear of giants that once paralyzed them was dispelled by God’s mighty hand.
They crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, and later the Jordan River as though it were dry land — a symbol that they would tread upon and overcome the overwhelming powers of Canaan. Jericho, strong and fortified, fell within a week. Yet Israel, intoxicated by victory, underestimated Ai. The spies’ report that only two or three thousand men were needed revealed the pride swelling in their hearts.

2. The Danger of Success
It is said that while some can endure failure, no one can withstand success. The downfall of empires begins at the height of their glory. Pride goes before destruction.
Israel had already learned that victory does not depend on numbers or fortifications. If God is with them, they win; if He departs, they lose. Life and death hinge on whether one desperately longs for God’s presence or trusts in one’s own strength.

3. Lessons for the Church Today
Today’s church often boasts of numbers and beautiful buildings. Yet God dwells in the lowly places. No one remembers Solomon’s golden temple or Herod’s magnificent sanctuary. Only the name of Jesus — who became the temple Himself and offered His body as a sacrifice — remains in the memory of generations.
When all collapses and burns away, God will not ask how splendid the temple was or how refined the worship appeared. He will remember only the prayers and worship offered with desperate sincerity.

4. The Sin of Achan
Into Israel’s pride crept Achan’s sin. Like Judas, his transgression spread like leaven through the whole community. One man’s sin led to the downfall of the people. Yet when corruption was cut away and a new beginning made, God once again stood with Israel and granted them victory.

5. Repentance and Renewal
The people of Ai grew careless, while Israel was humbled by repeated failure. Repentance brought them back to God. We learn through defeat and mistakes. Though we wish we could turn back time, human hearts often overlook their own faults. Thus, God’s hand both chastens and comforts, guiding us forward.

6. Perseverance in the Race of Faith
A single mistake may be forgiven, but repeated failure springs from stubbornness. Even when we resolve never to stumble again, we often falter and blame God. The cost of treating sin lightly after Jericho’s victory was severe. Yet when Israel renewed their resolve, trusted God, and fought wholeheartedly, He planted the banner of victory among them.

7. A Word of Hope
Today I grieve over my foolishness and failures. Yet I rely on the Almighty hand that lifts me up even after a thousand falls. He does not scold but speaks with gentle kindness, and I turn my gaze once more to His gracious face.
May you, beloved saints, remain vigilant even in times of peace and prosperity, fixing your eyes only on Jesus — the author and perfecter of our faith. May you be blessed in His name.
