예수님께서는 어린이처럼 되지 않으면 하늘 나라에 들어갈 수 없다고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 어린이처럼 자신을 낮추는 이가 하늘 나라에서 가장 큰 사람이라고 하셨습니다. 아기 예수의 데레사 성녀는 예수님의 이 말씀을 그대로 실천한 분입니다. 성녀는 열다섯의 어린 나이에 가르멜 봉쇄 수도원에 들어가서 9년 동안 수도원 생활을 하고 스물넷의 나이에 하느님 품으로 갔습니다.
데레사 성녀는 바오로 사도의 코린토 1서 13장의 ‘사랑의 찬가’에서 자신의 성소를 발견했다고 일기에 기록하고 있습니다. 그녀는 자신의 성소를 발견한 순간 기쁨에 넘쳐 이렇게 고백합니다. “오, 제 사랑이신 예수님! 제 성소를 마침내 찾았습니다. 제 성소는 사랑입니다. 저는 교회에서 제자리를 찾아냈습니다. 어머니이신 교회의 마음속에서 저는 사랑이 되겠습니다.”
데레사 성녀는 특별한 지식이나 능력이 없어도 모든 이가 갈 수 있는 길을 ‘작은 길’ 또는 ‘단순한 길’이라고 명명했습니다. 작은 길은 특별하고 눈에 띌 만한 것이 아니기에 주목받는 일이 없습니다. 작은 길 위에서는 땅바닥에 떨어진 바늘 하나를 주워 올리든 황금 성전을 짓든 중요하지 않습니다. 그녀는 하느님께서는 거창한 행동이 아니라 그 안에 들어 있는 사랑을 보신다고 확신했습니다. 그녀는 하루하루가 ‘작은 길’ 위에서 순례할 수 있는 사랑의 연습장이라고 믿었습니다. 주님께서는 우리가 하는 일의 양이나 크기가 아니라 그 안에 담긴 사랑을 보십니다. 비록 평범하고 작은 일이라도 사랑으로 행한다면 그것이 하루하루 우리가 성인으로 사는 길입니다.

예루살렘은 이스라엘의 중심으로 이스라엘과 운명을 같이한 곳입니다. 주님께서는 이사야 예언자를 통하여 “내가 예루살렘에 평화를 강물처럼 끌어들이리라.” 하시며 이스라엘을 위로하십니다(제1독서). 바오로 사도는 코린토 신자들에게 세상일에 대하여 너무 걱정하지 말라고 당부합니다. 다만 걱정해야 할 것이 있다면 어떻게 하면 주님을 기쁘게 해 드릴 수 있는지입니다(제2독서). 제자들은 예수님께 하늘 나라에서는 누가 가장 큰 사람인지 질문합니다. 예수님께서는 어린이처럼 자신을 낮추는 이가 가장 큰 사람이라고 답하십니다(복음).

아기 예수의 데레사 성녀는 1873년 프랑스의 알랑송에서 태어났습니다. 열다섯의 어린 나이에 리지외의 가르멜 수도원에 들어간 그녀는 결핵을 앓다가 1897년 24세의 젊은 나이에 선종하였습니다. 짧은 기간의 수도 생활이었지만 데레사 수녀는 마음을 다하여 기도하면서 고행하였습니다. 일상의 단순하고 작은 일에 충실하였던 그녀는 하느님에 대한 사랑이 지극한 가운데 죄인들의 회개를 위하여, 사제들, 특히 먼 지역에 가서 선교하는 사제들을 위하여 끊임없이 기도하였습니다. 선종한 뒤에 나온 데레사 수녀의 병상 저서들은 세계 각지에서 큰 반향을 불러일으키며 많은 이들을 감동하게 하였습니다. 1925년에 시성된 그녀를 1929년 비오 11세 교황은 ‘선교의 수호자’로 선포하였습니다. 성녀는 ‘소화(小花) 데레사’로 널리 알려져 있습니다.

오늘 전례
오늘은 선교의 수호자 아기 예수의 성녀 데레사 동정 학자 대축일입니다. 데레사 성녀는 어린 나이에 수도회에 들어가 짧은 생을 살다가 하느님 품으로 갔습니다. 성녀는 선교사들을 위하여 끊임없이 기도하였고, 작은 희생도 선교사들을 위하여 봉헌하였습니다. 그리하여 오늘날 그녀는 선교의 수호자로 공경받고 있습니다. 우리도 데레사 성녀의 불꽃같은 신앙을 본받을 것을 다짐하며 미사를 정성스럽게 봉헌합시다.

Reading 1 Jb 1:6-22

One day, when the angels of God came to present themselves before the LORD,
Satan also came among them.
And the LORD said to Satan, "Whence do you come?"
Then Satan answered the LORD and said,
"From roaming the earth and patrolling it."
And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job,
and that there is no one on earth like him,
blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?"
But Satan answered the LORD and said,
"Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing?
Have you not surrounded him and his family
and all that he has with your protection?
You have blessed the work of his hands,
and his livestock are spread over the land.
But now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has,
and surely he will blaspheme you to your face."
And the LORD said to Satan,
"Behold, all that he has is in your power;
only do not lay a hand upon his person."
So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

And so one day, while his sons and his daughters
were eating and drinking wine
in the house of their eldest brother,
a messenger came to Job and said,
"The oxen were ploughing and the asses grazing beside them,
and the Sabeans carried them off in a raid.
They put the herdsmen to the sword,
and I alone have escaped to tell you."
While he was yet speaking, another came and said,
"Lightning has fallen from heaven
and struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them;
and I alone have escaped to tell you."
While he was yet speaking, another messenger came and said,
"The Chaldeans formed three columns,
seized the camels, carried them off,
and put those tending them to the sword,
and I alone have escaped to tell you."
While he was yet speaking, another came and said,
"Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine
in the house of their eldest brother,
when suddenly a great wind came across the desert
and smote the four corners of the house.
It fell upon the young people and they are dead;
and I alone have escaped to tell you."
Then Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair.
He cast himself prostrate upon the ground, and said,

"Naked I came forth from my mother's womb,
and naked shall I go back again.
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;
blessed be the name of the LORD!"

In all this Job did not sin,
nor did he say anything disrespectful of God.

Gospel Lk 9:46-50

An argument arose among the disciples
about which of them was the greatest.
Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child
and placed it by his side and said to them,
"Whoever receives this child in my name receives me,
and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
For the one who is least among all of you
is the one who is the greatest."

Then John said in reply,
"Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name
and we tried to prevent him
because he does not follow in our company."
Jesus said to him,
"Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you."
