4-0 |
Los Angeles was the only team to sweep in the first round, making easy work of the Denver Nuggets. Are the Lakers that good, the Nuggets that bad or was it just an issue of matchups? The second round may give a better glimpse of how strong this Laker team really is.
|
2 (6) |
4-1 |
How different would the series against the Suns have gone had San Antonio's Michael Finley, Tim Duncan or Manu Ginobili missed at the end of regulation, OT or Double-OT of Game 1? The Suns had flaws but were one of the most dangerous teams in the postseason. The Spurs always seem to ratchet up their game in the playoffs. Until they're defeated, the defending champs remain the favorite to win it all.
|
3 (4) |
4-1 |
The Hornets were perceived as overachievers all year, but by this point it's clear they're an outstanding basketball team. New Orleans kept never-ending pressure on the Mavericks and Dallas cracked. Coach Byron Scott is Coach of the Year and now Avery Johnson is looking for work. Will the Hornets have similar success against the Spurs?
|
4 (9) |
4-1 |
Dwight Howard was a beast against the Toronto Raptors. Watching the Celtics, Pistons and Cavaliers go to six games, perhaps the Magic are more serious contenders than given credit?
|
5 (7) |
3-2 |
The Jazz have the opportunity to close out the Rockets on Friday in Utah. Dropping the one home game to Houston was unexpected but at least that one was close (94-92). What happened in Game 5? The Jazz were blown out in Texas by 26 points!
|
6 (14) |
3-2 |
LeBron James barely missed the lay-up to close out the Wizards. The way the game is officiated, James has the ability to get to the basket in nearly any crucial situation. That's why the Cavaliers will not be an easy out for any team this postseason.
|
7 (1) |
3-2 |
Dropping a single game to Atlanta was plausible, but going back to Boston tied up 2-2? The Celtics at 66-16 should have already secured a second-round berth playing against the 37-45 Hawks. Perhaps it was the wake-up call they needed after a bout of overconfidence?
|
8 (3) |
3-2 |
The Pistons actually fell behind 1-2 to the Sixers before taking a 3-2 series lead. Similar to the Celtics/Hawks series, the Pistons were supposed to take care of Philadelphia with relative ease. Now the Sixers can force a Game 7 should they win tonight at home.
|
9 (5) |
2-3 |
There's no faulting the Rockets who are playing as hard as they can without center Yao Ming. Tracy McGrady still has some clutchness issues to deal with in the playoffs but the Rockets play tremendous team defense that gives them the chance to upset.
|
10 (17) |
2-3 |
By going toe to toe with the Celtics, the Hawks have emerged as this year's Golden State Warriors. They may not get through the first round but they've earned a lot of fans routing for the underdog. Their athleticism has posed a problem for the Boston Celtics.
|
11 (15) |
2-3 |
The Sixers are a young team undaunted by circumstances. They may not complete the upset but for a brief moment they had the veteran Pistons on the ropes. One guy who has benefited from Philadelphia's success is deposed Team President Billy King.
|
12 (13) |
2-3 |
Trying to reintegrate Gilbert Arenas proved to be too much of a distraction. The Wizards had nice chemistry late in the season that was briefly lost against the Wizards. After Arenas shut it down (the knee still isn't right), Caron Butler reasserted himself as Washington's best player and led the team to a surprise Game 5 victory in Cleveland.
|
13 (8) |
1-4 |
It's difficult to gauge the Suns. They arguably could have won the championship this year had they a better draw in the first round. On the other hand their pick-and-roll defense was so bad, they might have lost to any number of teams. Conflicting reports have either Mike D'Antoni fired, about to be fired, about to quit or helming the team next season. Stay tuned.
|
14 (11) |
1-4 |
Avery Johnson is good enough to coach a team to 50+ wins a season and take his team to the NBA Finals. Something was obviously missing in Dallas as the past couple of postseasons have ended very early. Was it the coach, the players, chemistry or a combination of all three?
|
15 (16) |
1-4 |
The Raptors five-game loss to the Magic wasn't a surprise considering how poorly Toronto played down the stretch of the regular season. Rumors have Sam Mitchell on the hot seat although General Manager Bryan Colangelo told reporters there's no coaching change to be made at this time. Don't sleep on the likelihood Mike D'Antoni ends up coaching north of the border next season.
|
16 (10) |
0-4 |
The Nuggets were flat-out awful in Game 3. Sure Denver fought harder in Game 4, but once they fell behind 0-3 to the Lakers, the series was all but done. LA was bad matchup for the defense-challenged Nuggets.
|
17 (19) |
41 - 41 |
The Blazers are best positioned to be a threat next year once they get Greg Oden in the lineup. Add in another lottery pick and the possible signing of Rudy Fernandez, if healthy Portland could be a serious player next season.
|
18 (12) |
48 - 34 |
It's difficult to place the Warriors considering they won 48 games but still missed the playoffs. If they return intact, they're right back in the mix. Does Coach Don Nelson retire? Does Baron Davis opt out? Do the Warriors re-sign Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins? More questions than answers at this early stage.
|
19 (28) |
23 - 59 |
Considering both Elton Brand and Corey Maggette have contract opt-outs, the Clippers too have a lot to resolve before next season. The odds of Brand staying are high; the odds Maggette returns may be low. Add another lottery pick to the mix and some badly needed health and add the Clippers to the long list of Western Conference forces.
|
20 (20) |
38 - 44 |
The Kings were one of the few teams who played hard down the stretch despite not having a chance at a postseason berth. Ron Artest appears unlikely to opt out which begs the question, does Sacramento look to trade one of their best players? Do they keep such a polarizing figure and look to extend him long term?
|
21 (18) |
36 - 46 |
The Pacers would fall short in their race to the playoffs but they fought hard to make it. Mike Dunleavy had a career year. What can Indiana do to move the contracts of Jermaine O'Neal and Jamaal Tinsley?
|
22 (22) |
32 - 50 |
Charlotte has a lot of nice pieces but with injuries and a rookie coach in Sam Vincent, they just couldn't put it together. Now that Larry Brown has the job, look for the Bobcats to place in the Eastern Conference top eight next season.
|
23 (23) |
33 - 49 |
The Bulls have a lot to resolve this summer, most notably the contracts of Ben Gordon and Luol Deng. Getting out of Ben Wallace's contract was a boon for Chicago. Now can they repair a team that should have been a playoff contender? That task will fall on the lap of a yet to be named head coach.
|
24 (21) |
34 - 48 |
The Nets are rebuilding in earnest now. They may get worse before they get better.
|
25 (30) |
15 - 67 |
There's a decent drop-off in talent after the top two picks. The HEAT need the lottery to maintain their position. The big question this summer will be the future of Shawn Marion. Does he opt out, stay another season or do they agree to a long-term extension?
|
26 (29) |
20 - 62 |
With the future of the "Seattle" SuperSonics in doubt, at least the team is penciled in with the second pick in the draft. It appears PJ Carlesimo will retain his job another season.
|
27 (25) |
22 - 60 |
The Wolves have some building blocks but they could use some luck to climb from third in the draft to the top two. Al Jefferson is a good foundation piece for Minnesota. Do they keep the solid Ryan Gomes?
|
28 (24) |
22 - 60 |
Rumors persist that the Grizzlies might change coaches. For now Marc Iavaroni has the job along with a young, talented team that plays no defense whatsoever.
|
29 (26) |
23 - 59 |
The Knicks may get a boost in the rankings by a solid coaching hire. After losing 59 games, New York is slotted fifth in the lottery. Will a strong season next year suggest that the problem all along was Isiah Thomas? Or will he be somewhat vindicated? Since he's the guy who put the roster together, odds are he doesn't come out looking like the good guy in either circumstance.
|
30 (27) |
26 - 56 |
Scott Skiles will probably turn the Bucks around but it may not happen in year. Too many individualist scorers and not enough tough guy/defenders . . .
