The humans live in time but our Enemy destines them to eternity. 

인간은 시간 안에 살지만 우리의 원수는 그들을 영원으로 향하게 정해 놓았다 (마귀의 원수는 하나님이심)

He therefore, I believe, wants them to attend chiefly to two things,

따라서 그는, 내가 믿기에, 주로 두 가지 일에 그들이 주목하기를 원한다

 to eternity itself, and to that point of time //which they call the Present. 

영원 그 자체와 그들이 현재라고 부르는 시간의 그 시점에

For the Present is the point /at which time touches eternity. 

왜냐면 현재는 영원과 접촉하는 시간의 한 시점이기 때문이다

(인간의 영혼은 immortal 불멸의 존재이기에 현재를 사는 건 영원의 일부를 사는 게 된다)

Of the present moment, and of it only, 

현재의 한 순간과 그 순간에서만

humans have an experience /analogous to the experience //which our Enemy has of reality as a whole; 

인간은 우리의 원수가 가진 현실 전체에 대한 경험과 유사한 경험을 가진다

in it alone freedom and actuality are offered them.

그 순간의 경험 안에서만 자유와 현실성이 그들에게 제공된다

* humans have an experience (Of the present moment, and of it only,)

 He would therefore have [them] [continually concerned either with eternity (or with the Present])

따라서 그는 그들이 지속적으로 영원이나 현재에 대해 관심을 가지게 할 것이다

(which means being concerned with Him 영원이란 그와 관계된다는 의미이다)

or with the Present]

—either meditating on their eternal union with, or separation from, Himself,

or else obeying the present voice of conscience, bearing the present cross,

receiving the present grace, giving thanks for the present pleasure.

Our business is [to get them away from the eternal, and from the Present].

우리의 일은 그들이 영원이나 현재로부터 멀어지게 하는 것이다

With this in view, we sometimes tempt a human (say a widow or a scholar) to live in the Past. 

이런 관점을 가지고, 우리는 때때로 한 인간이 (말하자면 과부나 학자) 과거에 살도록 유혹한다

But this is of limited value, 

그러나 이건 제한적인 가치에 관한 거다

for they have some real knowledge of the past 

왜냐면 그들은 과거에 대한 사실적 지식을 다소 가지고 있고

and it has a determinate nature and, to that extent, resembles eternity.

 It is far better to make them live in the Future.

Biological necessity makes [all their passions] [point in that direction already],

so that [thought about the Future] inflames hope and fear.

Also, it is unknown to them, so that in making them think about it we make [them] [think of unrealities].

In a word, the Future is, of all things, the thing least like eternity. 

한 마디로 미래는 모든 것들 중 영원과 거의 같지 않은 것이다 

It is the most completely temporal part of time—

그건 거의 전부 임시적/현세적인 일부의 시간이다

(비현실적인 일에 쓰인 망상시간은 영원한 진짜 현실과는 동떨어진 일부의 시간이다)

for the Past is frozen and no longer flows, and the Present is all lit up with eternal rays.

왜냐면 과거는 멈추어져 있고 더 이상 흐르지 않지만 현재는 영원의 빛줄기로 온통 빛나기 때문이다
