수21:1

성별된 자에 대한 배려가 나옵니다. 땅을 받지 못한 레위인들에게 지파별로 성읍과 목초 지를 제공하도록 명하십니다. 이것은 성막 봉사에 전념해온 레위 지파에 대한 배려이자 흩어져 거주할 레위인들을 통해 가나안 전역에서 하나님의 통치가 이루어지게 하려는 목적도 있었습니다. 예공, 이스라엘 12지파는 자신들이 받은 땅에서 목초지가 딸린 성읍을 레위 인들에게 제공해야 한다. 레위 인들은 희생 제물로 쓸 가축을 키워 제물 시장에 독점 공급하여 생계를 유지했을 것이다.

성경을 펼쳐보니 레위 인들이 거주할 도성과 목초지를 12지파가 마련해 주는 내용이다. 야곱의 12아들들 가운데 요셉은 두 지파의 축복(에브라임, 므낫세)을 받았고, 레위는 땅을 얻지 못 했잖아. 정복 전쟁이 마무리되고 각 지파가 땅을 분배 받은 후에 레위 지파를 대표하는 제사장 엘르아살이 여호수아에게 레위 지파가 거할 성읍을 할당해 달라고 요구하였다. 본문은 레위 지파의 그핫 자손이 29성읍, 게르손 자손 10성읍, 므라리 자손 12성읍을 각 지파로부터 부여 받고 있음을 기록하고 있다.

레위 지파는 한데 모여 살지 않고 각 지파들에 골고루 흩어져 살면서 각 지파에서 영적 지도자 역할을 했을 것이다. 앞에서는 레위 지파 가문을 중심으로 그들이 얻은 성읍 수를 기록했다면 이번에는 12지파들 안에 구체적으로 어떤 성읍을 어떤 레위 가문에게 부여 하였는지 기술하고 있구나. 예공! 어떤 지파도 레위 인이 거할 성읍을 할당하는 일에 주저하지 않았을 것이다. 떠돌이로서 아무 가진 것 없이 애급에서 노에로 살던 나도 하나님께 땅을 받아 누리고 있으니, 이제 레위 사람들도 자신들의 선물을 통해서 존재할 수 있게 해주는 것이 마땅하다고 생각했을 것이다.

얼핏 보면 레위 인들이 여호수아와 제사장 엘르아살에게 지분을 요구하는 것이 덕스럽지 못하다고 생각할 수 있으나 이것은 여호와께서 모압 평지에서 모세에 명했던 약속의 성취다.(민35:1-8)일하는 일꾼이 삯을 요구하는 것은 당연한 것이지. 성도들 쪽에서 보면 레위 인들을 부양해야 한다는 말인데 좀 더 의미를 밝히면 자선의 의미도, 도움의 의미도 아닌, 하나님의 것으로 하나님의 명령을 따르는 것이기에 레위인의 권리 주장은 정당하다고 본다.

교회가 커지면서 결혼, 장례 광고가 거의 매주 실리는 것을 보면서, 대부분 목사님들이 월요일에 휴무를 하는데 아빠처럼 지방에서 행사가 있으면 휴무도 쉬지 않고 도피성이 되어줘야 하는 레위인의 특성 상 애로 사항이 이만저만이 아닐 것이란 생각이 드는 구나. 대형 교회에 대한 부정적인 시각의 일견은 헌금론 때문이었는데 레위 인을 부양해야 하는 책임이 성도에게 있다는 것을 헌금론으로 적용한 탓이다. 이왕지사 레위인의 요구가 합당하고 내가 공동체로부터 빚이 있다면 힘에 겹도록 헌금 해야 하지 않겠는가? 하나님께 성별 된 우리가 지향해야 할 가치의 소명은 무엇인가?
